The long and short of it:

Guy walks down street, sees girl

Guy: "Hi! My name is X, I noticed you and..."
Girl: "RAAAAAPIIIIIIIST!!! STREET HARRASSMEEEEEEEEEENT"
Guy cries on the way home.

Next day, Guy sees girl

Guy: (thinking) "she has her phone out, so she wouldn't want to talk to me anyway"

Next day, Guy walks outside, sees girl

Guy: (thinking) "she's really pretty, but I'm just going to look at my phone and pretend I didn't notice her--she's on her phone anyway"

Next day, Guy walks outside, DOESN'T see girl

Guy: (thinking) "I wonder how much XP I can get before my wizard..."

Next day, Guy walks outside, DOESN'T see girl

Guy: (scrambled thinking) "der used 2 b dis thang callllled language buttt i ferget how 2 yoozit no morez"

Between men being afraid of being labeled creeps and everyone living on their phones, everyone has forgotten how to connect as human beings on the most basic of levels.

Everything is instant gratification, low effort, and chosen by flicking an option on our phone screens. Naturally, that type of callousness and disconnect finds its way into relationships--and into the bedroom.

Prior to my being with my partner, I had noticed someone noticing me on a fairly regular basis. I was in the grocery store one night getting something for dinner, noticed this same guy noticing me again (we apparently shop at the same time) and I thought hmm... either this guy wants to know why I buy the Orange juice I do and is afraid to ask, or he'd like to talk to me and is afraid to approach me... let's go find out which!

So I walked up and asked him (in the meat dept), 'Can I help you pick out your juice?' After he got over the initial shock, stammering and lost the gobsmacked look on his face, he said no I said ok and started to walk away... at which point he asked me why I'd asked him that. I told him I thought it either had something to do with my Orange juice, or he wanted to talk to me and didn't know how to approach me without being creepy. The first thing he said back,'you noticed me?"

As it turns out, we didn't date, but we did go have a coffee after our hysterical 40 minute meat dept conversation, and we became fabulous friends. Years have past and he lives in a another country with an ocean between us, we still laugh about that day.

Try to have a little fun with it. I could have gone up to him and said why do you keep looking at me, but that's really quite intimidating, so I made light of some juice instead - used it as an ice breaker

That's a great story. I do think most people today would not be able to demonstrate your savvy in handling the situation. They're usually too shy to try, or perhaps they have an undue negative perception of the opposite sex which holds them back from trying--or messing up if they do try.

The biggest thing is to go into any situation regardless of what it might be with no expectations of the other person. Then you're more relaxed

Sadly true in a lot of places and I love having face to face conversations with people and prefer it, hell I haven't sent a text in around 5 years. Luckily my job has me be face to face with people on a daily basis which I love because I get to talk to all kinds of people and the folks in my town are pretty friendly.

As for you technologically obsessed and paranoid people have fun with your lonely lives behind a screen.

It's nonsense dude. You ask why people DON'T HIT ON EACH OTHER anymore. If you are on a relaxed state you simply can talk casually to people. But people being inexperienced talking to strangers make it seem awkward and make the other people feel awkward to talk with them. Try to smile and wish a pretty girl a nice day and pass by her. Both of you will survive it and who knows she will be stunned on how you approach her different than other creeps who only seek to get laid.

It's an exaggerated scenario, more about tech than gender. It wasn't really about dating, more about the breakdown in social skills of many people today.

Ahh I get what you mean now. Dude, I just think it only makes you more unique to be unaffected by this tech turning people into introverts. Encourage yourself and others as it will be really easy to break the ice considering the ice is only three/ four apps which only stall people during shyness occurs outside their home.

Not just with women, social skills are somethong people once thought wrongly were instinctual. The truth is they are 100% learned. Anyone who deosnt jave them is labeled a pariah, which ironically, makes it that much harder to learn them.

I myself struggled with anxiety most of my life.

Also, hysterical point about how a girl can be as mean as she wants to a guy, even acvuse him of being a rapist, and somehow society thinks that is her right...

I agree, social skills are very much learned. I honestly think they should be directly instructed in school.

i do find that the whole street harassment thing has a tendency to be overblown by women. The things that are considered harassment if the guy is unattractive to her aren't always the same things considered as harassment when the guy is attractive.

I always talk to strangers if I think doing otherwise will be awkward, waiting in a line for instance. People always seem to get SOOO uncomfortable.

Thanks. It's obviously exaggerated, but I think there's a sad kernel of truth to it. Such a shame that distrust has grown into mass hysteria and that our ability to communicate authentically has decreased along with the increase in technology.

My point is that people are losing their social skills because of undue distrust and overuse of technology, not about gender issues--I just an extreme example for the heck of it.
