I think empathy goes a long way... You see if people had ancestors who would have been enslaved longer because of what the CSA seceded for, why shouldn't they be pissed off if they see this everyday..hmm? And comparing it to the stars and stripes on slave ships is bull... Look, which ship in any era doesn't have its home country's flag on it, whether merchant or naval?

And what did the Founding Fathers secede for? it wasn't to keep slavery... There is the heritage argument, but so what? One person's heritage is another's exploitation, and heritage simply means the past or the past of one's culture or community. So there are valid reasons why people want the battle flag to go, and not whiny people who actually know shit about history.

I live in the south, born and raised here. My ancestors were enslaved during that time. They also fought in that war on both sides. What happened then is the past. Nobody here knows what it is like to live how they lived and none of us have a right to be offended by what THEY endured. All the hatred going around because of a flag is ridiculous. The burning of USA flags in other countries are just burning cloths coloured with the US colours. Still a lot of Americans find it offensive to see the US flag in flames... again emotions.

Again, both flags represent much to my family. I could choose to be offended or I could choose to continue living my life while focusing on other things. I never said that all black people live in poverty. What I do believe is that liberals engage in revisionist history when it suits their purposes. I know that some racist people have adopted the Confederate flag as their symbol and I can't change that. I do object to the notion that the old South was all about preserving slavery, the North was all about ending slavery, and that is why the war was fought. The truth is that the war started primarily over economic conditions imposed by the North, the war started in 1861, the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863 and it exempted all part so the South which were already under Union control (as well as the border states.)

The important question I asked was: does removing the flag from the Statehouse in South Carolina change any of the conditions that cause racism or class warfare? You did not answer that question because the answer is not convenient for your cause and you would rather ignore it. This flap is about power, not change.

Slavery is an institution which profited the North more than the South. Slavery made Southern cotton artificially cheap but the tariffs imposed by Congress made it impossible for Southern growers to sell their cotton in overseas markets. Therefore, they were forced to sell it to mills in the North, which then produced cloth and other cotton goods which they could sell at a bigger profit in the foreign markets. At the beginning of the war, much of the North was okay with slavery and much of the South was opposed.

The importation of slaves had been banned in 1807 and when the Southern states seceded from the Union, they continued the ban on importing slaves. Lincoln used slavery to turn the British opinion against the South and therefore dampen Britain's enthusiasm for supplying arms to the South.

However, the Emancipation Proclamation was not signed until January 1, 1863, almost 2 years after the war began, and those parts of the South already under Union control were exempted from its effect. I think it's good riddance to a flag flown by an army of people sworn to uphold and defend a constitution that specified slavery as a right. It's also the flag flown by an army of people who seceded because an election didn't go their way, and yes, to preserve slavery. What the hell kind of a democratic republic is that? It is the flag of an army of people who proved to be liars when they claimed it was all about state's rights, but then invaded Kentucky and when the Kentucky state legislature ordered them out, they refused to leave, to say nothing of the fact that they never recognized West Virginia until after the war.

I read a GAGer's "The Truth about Confederate History" page and found parts of it to be spectacularly UNtruthful, chiefly the claim, "MYTH – The War of 1861 – 1865 was fought over slavery." It's no myth at all. Don't believe me? Consult the Confederate founding fathers. Consult the Cornerstone Speech. Consult the Confederate Constitution. Consult the various declarations made by each state upon secession and how every single one of them mentions slavery, and how at least one (Texas) mentions the perceived innate inferiority of blacks.

I would, however, agree that the average Johnny Reb never fought to preserve slavery. I would also agree Lincoln never fought to end it. It was fought to preserve the United States by the North, and to defend their home country and to defend slavery by the South. I also think that there were, among the Confederate Army, many personally very honorable and decent men, Robert E. Lee is a fine example. However, there were no doubt many men who were personally very honorable and decent who fought for the Empire of Japan and Nazi Germany. This doesn't mean that we should, therefore, honor the flags that they fought for, because those flags stood for something rotten, as the Confederate flag did.

Furthermore, like it or not, the Stars and Bars (and yes, I know that wasn't it's true name, but 99.99999% of the world believe that the flag we're talking about is called the Stars and Bars) was hijacked by white supremecy groups and people who were attempting to block vital civil rights legislations. Just like how some people from various Germanic neo-pagan groups bitch about how the swastika was hijacked by Nazis, the people of the South need to understand that just like the swastika, for a HUGE number of people, the symbol has evolved, intentionally or not, into something that many people think stinks.

They didn't secede to maintain slavery. The north had passed several laws hurting the south, while still indirectly profiting from slavery for a long time. It was bad politics where the majority ruled, and the minority could just suck it. In a good democracy the majority needs to take the minority into consideration. After a while the south had enough and decided to rule themselves.

All the south really did in this supposed war, was to stop paying taxes and the north responded by sending in troops. Most people in the south didn't even own slaves, and certainly aren't going to go to war over something that didn't effect them.

Yes the people back then were certainly more racist, so of course you can draw examples toward any flag from that time period to show any flag as a symbol of racism, and often even sexism. How many more atrocities happened under the united states flag? I am sure many Native Americans feel just as offended by that flag as anyone else might over the confederate flag.

The north needed a way to spin the war to make the south sound like the bad guys, and luckily for them, they found the issue of slavery. So school children everywhere learned of how evil the south was, instead of learning about how bad the politics of the day was, that actually lead to the war. The fact is the north did not care enough about the issue of slavery, to go to war over it. In fact they allowed slavery to remain legal for several years after the civil war. This proves the war could not have been about slavery.

Slavery was banned by the Emancipation Proclamation during the war. Technically it didn't apply to the border states where slavery was allowed but that weren't seceding, but in 1865 (the year the war ended) the 13th Amendment banned all slavery in the US and its territories. The Confederate flag is a new symbol now, it's literally just a sign of the south, a unifying factor that the region desperately needs. The Confederacy was going to free the slaves before the Union was. They had begun to take steps to reduce slavery in the South in 1864, before the Civil War was over.

Lincoln ONLY freed the slaves because he wanted to restore the Union and saw that slavery needed to have a final, permanent decision. Did Lincoln really care about the slaves, or even blacks? Hell no!

Many of the Founding Fathers had slaves. They clearly didn't consider them equal, or they would have abolished slavery right then and there.

The Civil War was not fought to preserve slavery. That was a factor, but not the only one. The primary issue was states' rights (which of course *included*, among others, the right to have slaves). Robert E. Lee fought for the South because he was a Virginian, and he couldn't take up arms against his home state. That's how deep the loyalties to states ran back then. They considered themselves as citizens of their sovereign states FIRST, and citizens of the United States SECOND.

States' rights is still a relevant issue today, since the Supreme Court just told everyone that state elections are meaningless.

Technically the flag is treason, the south tried to seceede from the union. It also has racist connotations because the south seceeded for the "states rights" to have slavery. Indeed you are right, nevertheless if Germans used the Nazi flag in the same manner as you suggests, then a lot of people world wide would be offence and for good reasons. Yet is was the flag of the nation for around a decade and millions of German did to defend that Nazi flag/regime.

The confederate flag means different things to different people. But in hindsight it was always offensive. It was the flag that represented the confederacy. When that little bastard shot up that church in the name of racism and was seen with that flag in various pictures, that was the final straw with people.

It was, but it's not the one people are complaining about. They're complaining about the wrong flag. It isn't even the Confederate flag. It's just one that was used by Robert E. Lee.

I don't want to see the Confederate Battle Flag flown just like I don't want to see the swastika flown. Keep it in a museum, behind glass, explaining the history of it.

I hate that flag and what it represents, if people what to fly and worship it so be it you have the right to free speech.

But it should not be flown on any, government building be it local state or federal.
