I see a lot of people debating this on social media, and the idiocy is just overwhelming. Usually you can't give out these lengthy sophisticated or intelligent arguments because you'll piss off the rednecks, they'll call you a commie, or result to name calling. Yes, the confederate flag is racist. This is a flag that was used in combination with the idea that blacks are an inferior race, it was a symbol used by a movement that promoted and fought for slavery. It was used until it became SYNONYMOUS with the hatred of blacks. I see people waving this flag all the time claiming it's "heritage not hatred" which is a totally bullshit argument. First off, the Confederate Flag wasn't even the official Confederate flag. It's a Virginia Battle flag. The Confederacy had no official flag. Now, if it truly is about heritage, you have SO many options on how to represent where you are from, if you're from the South. Why would it be so awful to wave your state flag? You can represent your heritage in multiple ways but decide to choose a very controversial flag that became synonymous with the hatred of blacks. This is like a German, coming to America, and choosing to show his heritage, instead of using the modern German flag, decides to fly the Nazi flag then telling Jews to not get mad, it's not racist, he's only showing his heritage. I see frequently the argument that the original American flag was flown through racism as well. Yes, true. It was used for various purposes, it's sole intent wasn't just to show allegiance to a group supporting racial supremacy and slavery to the point it became a communication in which if you flown that flag you knew the intent of the message. Again, the Confederate Flag became synonymous. There are generally a few people who fly this flag. Those who don't have malicious feelings, and have no knowledge, people who openly hate black people. I think the biggest group, is usually people who support Right side politics, who only live the world concerning their own perspective and experiences, and as white males, unconciously think that Black experience must be the same as their own, so they deny the racism and ignore the history of the flag. Truly ignorant.

It’s not heritage, because there are many other flags that display southern heritage. It’s the fact that the confederacy separated itself to become it’s own government to enforce racism by owning slaves is what makes that flag spread hate.
Though the American flag itself does have racist roots as well. Not excusing that other problem itself because that’s a whole different topic.

I get why people dislike the flag do to the history behind it, but in reality the flag doesn't represent anything good or bad. Its just a design printed on to fabric. The flag represents what you the people choose. Its evil because its associated with evil, just the same it can be good if associated with good. Think about if the cards were reversed and the American flag and confederate flag switched places you would be pledging allegiance to the very thing you hate and hating the flag you love. I don't care what people say the confederate flag is in one of my favorite shows the dukes of hazard and I like it. The confederate states no longer exist its not there flag anymore its ours and we need to change the outlook and show what good can come of it. So instead of hating on the flag embrace it, it is not a symbol of oppression it is a symbol of strength the strength of the black community overcoming its horrible history. I know I'm going to get a lot of haters for what I said because they have there mind set and that's fine but I stand by what I say.

I have two Confederate Flags hanging on my bedroom wall. And having these flags hanging on my wall doesn't mean I'm racist. I was born in Virginia raised in Michigan and now I live in Georgia. And the reason I have these flags on my wall is because there based off of a T. V show and a movie The Dukes of Hazzard and Smokey and the Bandit Plus the movie The Dukes of Hazzard.

I'm not well versed but I've heard that the confederate flag wasn't made specifically for racism/slavery, and it had a number of ideals behind it, slavery being just one of them. I can't confirm this but that seems reasonable to me. So it's not as simple as "confederacy is slavery."

Additionally, if I recall correctly, we (as in the north) erected confederate statues, and similar gestures, as a means of keeping the peace and keeping the United States together. We wanted civility and unionization. The north didn't just say "well we won so you have to get rid of the confederacy and you can't have confederate statues because you're the losers and we're better than you."

Sure, I'm not a big fan of the confederacy. But I'm not out here causing unnecessary drama over things that happened in the past. And I'm sure as hell not trying to ostracized a large portion of the country. I'm here for unity, and you should be too. Nothing decent or unifying is going to be accomplished by you acting thisnway. The only thing you'll achieve is hatefulness and bitterness.

Prisoners of war has always been a thing due to their nationality and being a soldier for the enemy. Buying and selling slaves that had absolutely no origins in being in war who were not a soldier of war that had no intentions to killing anyone were stolen from their land, bought and sold for slavery, etc is ENTIRELY different than a prisoner of war.

Truthfully, we tend to ignore some realities of this topic
1. Slavery was commonly practiced throughout the world, throughout history, and especially in Africa. The perception we have of the slave trade tends to be of Europeans hiding in bushes and capturing Free Africans. In truth, it was Africans fighting and enslaving themselves, and selling them to European traders. This is not to say the Europeans were just in their actions, clearly they made the issue worse, which only further spurred African kingdoms to fight for more slaves.
2. The West ended slavery quite a while before the rest of the world. Much of the world was still practicing it openly only decades ago, and still its goes on today.
3. The United States didn't have a universal acceptance of slavery, and many territories outlawed it from the beginning (such as the Northwest Territory, and New England). It was always a difficult topic due to regional differences and economic realities. These complexities ultimately led to the Civil War.
