Just take a peek at the Netherlands. We have a holiday called "Sinterklaas". There's an old bearded guy (similar to Santa actually) with an entire team of helpers, and on December 5th, they bring presents to all children in the country. His helpers have always been a symbol of the holiday. They're regular people who are coated black, because they go down dusty and dirty chimneys all the time.

And then a few UN "representatives" who know nothing about the holiday cried "racist!" and now we have rainbow-colored helpers.
