She was a dreamer
A little girl that kept her nose in a book
Getting lost in the fairytale and wishing it were real
Wishing that she could summon up her fairy godmother to turn her into a princess
Even if it were just for one night
But her fairy godmother never came
Instead she ran into a big bad wolf
Hiding in sheep's clothing
Waiting to steal her innocence away
And like a thief in the night, he did
Taking her voice with him as he crept away
And she was left screaming in silence for no one to hear
This was the first rock thrown at the mirror of her life
Leaving behind a jagged crack
A symbol of the secret that she held within
And as the years went by that crack became the first in a series
The daggers from every insult leaving behind tiny cracks
A colorless mosaic left in place of every broken promise
But her cheeks were sore from keeping a constant smile plastered on her face
Until she got behind closed doors that is
There, the tears flowed like the river Jordan
Because when she cried, so did the little girl inside
The little girl that never got to enjoy being a little girl
The little girl that was forced to keep a secret
The little girl that had to grow up too soon
And the woman that kept her locked away because she didn't know how to set her free
They wept together
Then one day that little girl disappeared
Her screams a distant echo
For years she stayed away
And eventually became a dull memory, almost forgotten
And though there was a distinct emptiness inside, the woman was happy
Happy enough to go back to dreaming about fairytales and happily ever afters
Happy enough to believe that one day she'd be rescued by Prince charming
That he would take her away and protect her
And they would live the life that she used to dream about
Until she came face to face with the villain from her own personal nightmare
The big bad wolf...
And this time no amount of sheep's clothing could hide him
So it was her that went into hiding
She hid so deep inside of herself that she got lost
She became a shell
Until eventually the weight of the secret and the inrush of all those hidden memories broke her
And the world came crashing down all around
She clung to her mirror of life, the jagged pieces slicing her clothes to shreds
Cutting deep into her flesh
The pain almost unbearable, yet strangely soothing
Willing her to succumb, drowning her in blood and tears
And then she heard the scream
Powerfully piercing
Like it had been waiting to be heard forever
A voice inside of her said "let go"
And so she did
And that scream became so loud that it completely shattered the mirror of her life
As the little girl that had been locked away broke free
Taking with her the secret that had kept her there
And as the dust settled, the woman felt as light as air
She was bruised and she was battered, but she WAS
She had survived
The little girl had finally found her way out
Leaving the woman with a newfound sense of hope
She looked into the mirror of her life, and a ray of sunshine came shining through
Bathing her in warmth as the reflection from that mirror covered her in a million beautiful rainbows
A shattered masterpiece
And it was in that moment that she knew she would be ok
And so I was...
