@RachelBrigs fair enough but I just think people these days use a perfect world scenario in their head as a dantum line to compare everything to. The worlds cruel and dark. It always had been. The media and government just get good at painting little illusions of perfection in places that umbrella some people. It leaves them naive as hell though.
Truth is the races don't like each other. In some places they've come to an uneasy truce through necessity. Call it fear of consequences. Interracial couples are seen as traitors to their own kind. We're animals with animal instincts. Think a few thousand years of civilization is going to rub that out? No chance. You belong to the group that most fits your identity and like it or not, skin colour is an identity

Its not really an uneasy truce. Singapore has had a friendly peace between the races for quite some time.

Speaking from the teens at least, I'm an Indian, a minority in Singapore. But I get extremely little discrimination. At most, a Chinese person has refused to sit beside me in a bus maybe only once in my entire life. Most of my friends are Chinese and Malay, even my boyfriend is Chinese. Here interracial relationships are normal (for the younger generation). At most, there's just a little teasing from friends like "love knows no boundaries" or "singapore is a multi racial country". Thats it. So I disagree with your comment saying that it's too difficult to break out of our instincts. Sure we are scientifically animals, but humanity has come a long way from eating raw meat and such. Clearly our thinking and behaviour towards others can be more sophisticated than what it used to be. Humans nowadays give more love to other species' like dogs and cats than other fellow humans. It's sad

@Anita_467 were programmed to make groups coz were gregarious and engage in conflict with other group. Being a certain colour carries with it a stereotype in western culture. Being black in western culture makes young black kids act out characters from pop culture. Acting gangster, making gangs and talking funny. This isn't narrow minded bigotry, it's there for all to see. They base themselves off stuff they see on the telly like Boyz n the hood and nwa, bloods and crips. It's an identity they try and live up to coz it's a dominant image. All races do this and it annoys the other races. Where your from western culture doesn't have as much of a hold. Your lucky. It's like being in prison in the west, a slave to a certain way of thinking and acting. Media reinforces the prejudices so people never move on. There will always be a gulf here. The lines were drawn a long time ago and to date a different race is seen as a betrayal by a lot of people. Hell even I think that way

Well then I hope one day the west will be able to be more open-minded, and create an identity in which all races feel included and a part of. Here, most of see ourselves as Singaporeans. Sure when we're with our own racial group, we do what our race does, speak in our mother tongue and we eat the foods our race eats. But we're also able to be just as comfortable with those outside our respective races, talk in a common tongue and eat 'singaporean' food which is mostly fusion of racial foods. We just see ourselves as Singaporeans, and it's normal for us to mix, no matter what our colour is. At most the stereotype is that if we're making plans with a malay, we'll say "eh don't be late ah." As you can see, I'm really proud of being a singaporean, and of my culture as a singaporean. Hopefully one day, the westerners, of all colours, could be as proud of their own culture, and be united and happy being a part of it.

@Anita_467 okay. A black guy or a white guy attacks you brother or sister out of the blue. You're trying to pull them off and eventually a cop comes and splits them up. The guy who attacked your sibling is still mouthing off abuse that gets you angry even though he's being restrained by the abovementioned cop being led away. I bet you shout n** or cracker or something after them in anger. It's not a test it's human nature. If you didn't have these exceptions to other people you perceive as different there would be something wrong with you. If a black guy i didn't know from Adam insulted me I'd probably call him a black bastard. He'd probably call me something bad as well. There's always going to be that undercurrent of tension no matter how much we try to act as if there's not

Actually, I would just punch him, as I would to anyone of my own race if one of my own race hit my brother. I would insult the attacker, but I wouldn't insult his race or culture. Doing that insults ALL those under his race and culture, not him specifically. It's human nature to protect your family, yes. But it's not in human nature to be hateful and discriminatory. If it were, we'd be discriminating against nearly anyone who doesn't share the same sir-name as our own. Sure in Singapore, each race has their own identity, but most Singaporeans have learnt to enjoy the differences and learn from each other until we formed a fusion of identities, which we named Singaporean. We've accepted each other. If a Chinese person attacked my brother, I'd call him a bastard. But if that person was Indian, or Malay or any other race, I would still just call him a bastard. There really is no undercurrent tension (at least, in Singapore)

There is racism in Singapore, I won't deny that. But it isn't discrimination between the individual races among Singaporeans, it's Singaporeans as a whole not liking foreign workers. We don't hate them for their colour, or their looks. The reason we dislike them is because they take the high-paying jobs and the bigger properties and all that. The reason we dislike them is because our government treats foreign workers better than they treat their own people. If there's any discrimination in Singapore right now, it would be because of that. However, if foreign workers integrated with Singaporeans more, go to the same schools, live in the same flats, I'm pretty sure that the hate would die down, and we'd accept them into our community as well.

It's the imbalance people don't like. If the whole world changed its views at once then it would be a good thing not to be but it's just the west that puts sanction on free speech. The muslims call whites infadel, the Asians call us white devil's so do the blacks. There's a lot of hate pointed at the white race but it's fine for them to attack whites with no recourse. You think its fair one race is forced to be tolerant whilst the others spit bile whenever they choose? The angers festering barely beneath the surface and the pc mob are making it worse
