Things We Face as an Interracial Couple

As someone whose in a relationship with a guy of darker skin for a few years, there are things that we face daily that we never encountered before, or took notice as much with other interracial couples until we became a couple. Here are just a few examples of what we encounter and took notice of when we first began our relationship together..

When you actually need to edit your pictures..

Yep.. you heard right ahah. I have a fair/tan complexion while he's on the darker side so when we take photos or selfies, finding the correct lighting is pretty impossible. Even editing the lighting in photos is just as impossible. Can you imagine the night pictures... haha

The double take looks

Those looks where they glance your way once and turn away and then quickly look again.. either with disgust, confusion or happiness. This especially happens when they see us holding hands. Especially the looks from each others so called skin colour groups.

Being constantly reminded

Being told constantly that 'One day you two will make beautiful babies.' Obviously pointing out the fact most of the time is because of our skin colour differences.

When your friends tread safely

Noticing friends of each other carefully wording their sentences so that they don't offend the partner because of their race.

Tasting new food!

One of my favourite things that we share is the different culture of food that we get to experiment, with the difference of both our backgrounds

There is oh so many more, the list could go on for ages, but one thing that it has aided me is opening my eyes to seeing these things with other couples also. Sometimes you even share a look with them, but at the end of the day I'm in a relationship with someone that makes me feel special everyday, someone that I can always count on.

There are 3 types of white chicks who date black guys.
1. Whire women who just like the guy regardless of his race and want a serious future.
2. The bratty white chick with Daddy issues that wants attention and drama.
3. Privledged white college chicks who want to appease their white guilt or to be able to say in future "I'm not racist I date/dated a black guy/guys". They have bought into the whole SJW bullshit and want to show They are an "ally" of the BLM, believing that dating a black guy is reparation for slavery and discrimination. They usually end up married to a white guy when they get into their 30's. You know the kind of chicks that believe voter I'd is racist.

It is not the color of their skin that would probably become an issue. It is the culture of the person and what beliefs he or she has grown up with. Culture differences are the #3 reason for divorces world-wide. It cannot be denied,

Actually, I disagree.

No.1 I used to work for a photography studio (now run my own). There is nothing more awkward than misjudging lightening for an differently racial couple. You get to chose your own filters but for professionals we have to judge it ourselves and hope you don’t hate us.

2. I’ve never come across this.

3. Same race couples receive the same comments. People aren’t saying “oh you would make wonderful caramel for Nestle” they are actually trying to compliment you.

4. friends don’t care. It’s all a joke.

5. Oh so tasting new foods is an interracial couple only thing? I should let my friends and family know. I’ve been eating Indian and Chinese food for years without realising I had to band someone of that persuasion. I eat Italian food too, I’m running out of siblings to pimp out!

Or! As an interracial couple you don’t need to focus on this? My brother and sister are interracial and haven’t “suffered” most of this.

Firstly my sister in law (crazy shit) did you know, she knows she’s brown and my brother isn’t? The camera isn’t broken? They’ve never had double like with them or their kids.

Nobody reminds them one is brown. The friends don’t tread carefully because they aren’t sensitive and as foreign food, they embrace everthing.

woah ahah it's fine if you don't agree :) I'm not saying we're suffering, I was just saying stuff that we went through when we first began dating and actually noticed, can i just point out the fact that everyone experiences this stuff differently, just because you're relatives haven't gone through some stuff like this doesn't mean other people haven't. The food thing wasn't exactly a thing we face, it was just something we find interesting seeing the difference, not the fact that you can't do this if you ain't interracial

There are two things you could do if your really finding things awkward. This is what I would do. Move to a place or a country that doesn't make you feel that way and u become part of that culture n everything and you can live a happy life. If your comfortable with your present life and only these awkward moments hits a nerve here's one piece of advice from personal experience.

For these moments:

1. You can memorize it or keep it in the back of your mind (open access at anytime. No wep) Say to yourself...

or

2. You can get new clothes n stuff.
New shirt/A pure gold necklace (so when you look in d mirror), A new pair of pants/ shorts and shoes (so when ur aimlessly looking at your feet, it happens when you feel awkward), etc. But most importantly a watch so when you tend to sigh in those moments and aimlessly look at the time.

You see those big ass letters that can make a person go blind staring back at you saying... IDGAF. Thug Life 😎 Peace Homie. *thumps chest* ✌

all food are great...
we eat russian, jap. italian, koren, ethopian, anything you can think of that you dont have to fly to that country to eat there... not that we are not traveling... we hate going to small town... all chain fast foods...

move here you will love it...

my children already know most of the countries in this world and wnats to travel to one ea. year... they have seen more than 1/2 of the states and find it boring... we just got them passport... so they will travel and see/help those who are less fortunate...

I've never been in a interracial relationship. But I will probably be in one, since I'm black and I'm attracted to white guys.
However, there are a lot of things that I'm worried about, and one of them is facing racist family members or friends. I don't want to go through that...

"Being told constantly that 'One day you two will make beautiful babies.'" - I've heard this before. And people shouldn't really say that. I mean, it's not offensive or rude. But they shouldn't point that out. They will be just babies, there's no difference between them and babies who are not biracial.

The thing with racist family members is that even by how much they offend you, you still need to show the respect but if it keeps going on just need to learn to ignore it. The hard thing is the family members because you're somewhat trying to impress them so hopefully the family members take the time to see it. Would be hard work, thankfully I didn't have to go through with that, plus disrespecting them is stooping to how they are and is giving them more of a reason to not want you there.

The babies thing hahha yeah it's not offensive but you don't hear people repeating that to couples of the same race just as much haha

Yes, that's true. If you disrespect them is even worse, because they might sabotage your relationship. Just because you didn't like what they said or did, and you defended yourself. So, it's complicated.
You're lucky for not having to go through to that. It would be one of the worst things that could happen to me if I was dating a white guy.

Hahaha I laughed seeing that double take looks gif. God knows how people were looking at me and my boyfriend just because I am a small sized girl while he is chubby. People were often even asked "is he your big brother/papa/uncle?".

I face this situation too just because my SO comes from different state than me and have a bit darker skin shade. My siblings who knows him often complaints to me how I deserves better man but I said Im tired of it. Why need handsome guy when my SO is actually handsome, and even care about me more than anyone else. That wasn't included the fact my parents were hoping they will have son-in-law from the same state as we're (and I wish they'll forget that, and move past the barrier of state itself).

And the food thing, was he born in a different country then? Usually if you grow somewhere you grow up mostly with the local culture (including food).

Awesome. Thank you for sharing. Culture will contribute more than race will in terms of food. I'm happy for you guys to find love. I also noticed with an interracial couple that people might assume that you are not together when you go out with one member's family and not the other. For example, a friend of mine went with his girlfriend's family to six flags and due to their difference in race, they assumed that he cut ahead of them.

I would never say some stupid shit like 'your babies will be so beautiful' to an interracial couple. As if there's some big question about it if the babies aren't mixed. Not to mention, lets be real, there's ugly mixed children who become ugly mixed adults as well. Tbh it's a rare trait to date outside our culture due to the fact that we're not so used to different customs let alone a different skin tone. All in all we're all human and it shoudnt make a difference if whether big, small fat, skinny etc. Great my take!

I've dated women of all different flavors and was in a relationship with a beautiful young Asian girl last year. Being a conservative white guy I could really care less what here race/ethnicity is as long as she respects me and I'm attracted to her.

I can tell you that most people in the western world nowadays REALLY DON'T CARE who you share your bed with. However, the stupid ass side effect of all this is PARANOIA. People are paranoid what other people think of them. People assume other people are automatically being judgmental. Although discrimination is at an all-time low, people are paranoid that someone is going to burn a cross on your front yard.

Just own your relationship. It's only a problem if you make it one.

Ehhh... I guess? I don't consider my relationship to be "interracial," and neither does my girlfriend... we just consider it to be a relationship. Our skin colors are different but it's not a thing. "Being constantly reminded" isn't real, "new foods" is real but not because of our skin, and "double take" doesn't exist either, at least not very much. At least not for us.

When I was in one with a black guy, we got lots of looks in public, and I got a lot of shit from family. Not together anymore, I'm in a relationship with a half-white half-hispanic but don't get any reactions out of it. Maybe the beautiful babies once or twice but that's it.

I have experience it. My relationship was unusual, but I really don't know if it was the relationship the cause of why her family didn't give a damn about our relationship, or if it was where I am from, and my racial background.
