I'm sure you know some history of Western Civilization, we all do. There was ancient times with Romans and Greeks, dark ages with Merlin and castles and barbarity, Renaissance, crusades, all that good stuff. World Wars...

Today, you hear constantly that islam is a religion of peace, and while you hear about the crusades, you don't hear much about islamic wars against Europe. "That's okay" you figure. "That was like, 2000 years ago or something."

Allow me to reorient your mind on history. Today, the USA, and to a degree Europe, run around the Middle East like it's their war games. We own it, practically. So why would you worry about islam? That's something for the FBI to handle, they've got it under control.

The technological advantage that allows Americans to play cop in the Middle East was not always there... and if you're smart, you'll realize it won't always be there. Let me shock you with some actual dating.

You probably know who this guy is.

He was born in 1706. When he was growing up, Europe was still facing threat of islamic domination coming from the East.

In 1683, the Ottoman Empire was sieging Vienna, Austria, in their war to conquer Europe.

This wasn't some skirmish or minor battle. You understand? Vienna. It was just a few hundred years ago that islam nearly conquered the known world, and also would have basically succeeded in stamping out Christianity, unless the American Colonies survived.

Let's also put this in perspective. Remember World War 1? The Ottoman Empire, an islamic empire, was a part of the Central Powers. Europe as we know it did not start to come around until after the Russo-Turkish War (1806–12), and European and Russian powers started removing islamic control of places like Hungary, Moldavia, and Bulgaria.

Today, we pamper ourselves in this moment of supremacy, in our abilities. We tell ourselves Islam is a loving kitten, given a bad name by a few random rabid beasts. Yet we ignore history. We ignore simple reality--nations rise and fall, and the USA and Europe face dire times, both in financial straits and through shockingly low birth rates. We stand proud atop our momentary might, forgetting that history almost turned into a different world. Islamic nations currently are behind the West in terms of technology... for how long? Centuries, we dream. Decades, years?

... I actually meant it as a history lesson, that people need to understand that islam almost conquered Europe, and there's no guarantee it won't rise again. Hence, it should be taken seriously, not dismissed with a "religion of peace" comment.

By respect, he means the respect you would give a dangerous enemy... That is, acknowledging how dangerous they are. We should be vigilant and not just think that we are safe because of our current tech advantage. If we let them get nuclear weapons, it will really get nasty.
