It's fed to them from before they can reason for themselves and because their family and friends share those beliefs they never question it. People are so gullible when they're kids.
Religious people outnumber non-religious people both within the US and globally. Within the US, it's about 20% who define themselves as non-religious. Globally, I don't have any numbers but the percentage of atheists is probably even smaller. The only countries where atheism is a majority are Japan and perhaps China. In countries such as Norway or Sweden, it's about 50:50.
@BlueCoyote You don't have to be atheist to not be religious lol some people just don't believe. And here in the US the number of non religious people is actually rising has been as the generations continue to deteriorate.
Non religious = atheist. Some people (mostly religious people) have completely wrong ideas of what an atheist is. I don't know where this comes from. A large part is certainly propaganda from the conservative-religious groups. Maybe some individuals in the new-atheism movement such as Christopher Hitchens might also have made these wrong ideas stronger. However, atheism simply means to "lack a belief in god" --> Ancient Greek "A-" for "no" or "non" and "theus" for "god".
@BlueCoyote "Maybe some individuals in the new-atheism movement such as Christopher Hitchens might also have made these wrong ideas stronger." Doesn't change the fact that he was a raging asshole who was no better than who he claimed to oppose.

Well done, well written. But casting off deeply held beliefs is not an easy thing. And articles like this will just make them defensive - "That's not why I believe" etc..

Wow. I loved reading this!
Fear. That's the cause of it all. Hope is a symptom of fear. I don't care what anyone says.
Honestly I don't know anymore sometimes I don't believe in much of anything without proof, but who's to say God isn't some alien species who created us or had something to do with starting life I don't know, who's to say the universe wasn't created by a living being, but I know that sounds stupid, but I know I don't believe in God in the way that he is watching over us.
Religion is man-made however. What do you think why there are about 10,000 different religions on this planet? There's so, so, so much more than christianity, judaism, islam, hinduism and buddhism.

Except that most people aren't religious nowadays there were more religious people 50-60 years ago then there are today.

Because they are scared of death
And I'm an atheist
We're you always atheist, I don't know I think I might be possibly atheist, but at the sametime maybe not.
@Shawn58 do you believe in god or not?
I've been an atheist since I was 13

This take was about why religion is considered "normal" to believe in.
@Shawn58 you are an agnostic atheist
Yea pretty much.
I hate Abrahamic mythology. Greek mythology is so much more entertaining and the gods are less evil.
Well, I'm not most people then, since I'm not religious.
Your correct but it all stems from one thing I believe, Death.
Because it's not like what athiests say that religion is man-made thing. It's a serious thing.
These two things are not mutually exclusive. Fascism is a man-made thing and it's pretty damn serious.
@BlueCoyote It's got to be way more serious when it's not a man-made thing.
Religion is man-made however. What do you think why there are about 10,000 different religions on this planet? There's so, so, so much more than christianity, judaism, islam, hinduism and buddhism.
Because of hope and fear.
Simple.
This take is about why religion is seen as "normal"
Oh. Then the answer is tradition...
The religious just need a better hobby.
I am neutral about it...
I just am
