Disadvantages of Being in your Twenties

There are some good things about being in your twenties. Your brain may still be developing, and your body is normally in good shape and can easily repair itself. However, there are some disadvantages of being in your twenties.

Disadvantages of Being in your Twenties

Modest Bank Account

The size of one's bank account varies from person to person. Some people start working in their teens, and so by their twenties, they have accrued a decade worth of work experience and some savings in the bank account. Other people may be stuck in post-secondary education for as much as a decade, and during the post-secondary education, they may do volunteer work, charity work, or under-the-table paid jobs. If they work at a burger-flipping job with no upward mobility, then they are just working to get paid rather than working as part of an overall fulfilling career. But whatever the case may be, the bank account is likely going to be relatively smaller than a person who has more than 30+ years of experience in the workforce.

Some young people are part of the super rich, so they will receive a very large inheritance. Even while their parents or grandparents are still living, they may already have a luxurious lifestyle. Other young people may start their careers very early (as children or teenagers), so by their twenties, they become very wealthy and may have the time to enjoy the fruit of their labor.

Expectation of Babies and Family Life

Some families, like Dan's Asian family in the YouTube video, expect big milestones to happen in a linear timeline. Other families just let the grown-up children do whatever they want with their adult lives. I think some young adults in their twenties face the questions and expectations of childrearing and childbearing, because people in their 20s are most fertile during this time and traditionally become young parents. But, just because many people historically did reproduce in their teens and twenties (they still do in developing countries) doesn't mean that everyone wants to reproduce offspring at that age. Maybe a person is rational enough to understand that s/he is unable to handle the costs of recreational or procreative sexual intercourse, let alone the costs of raising a baby; and so, temporary abstinence from dating/courtship/relationships/marriage/sex/babies is practiced.

In 2010, the median age of first marriage in the United States for men is 28 years and for women is 26 years. So, if you are a person between the ages 25 and 30, expect a lot of questions (usually from close family members) regarding marriage, babies, and your sexuality. If you choose not to enter the dating scene and marry at this age, then you will be considered a little weird by society.

Regular menstrual periods

Menstruation is both a blessing and a curse. The good thing is that a normal, regular menstrual flow is a sign of fertility. The bad thing is that the bleeding makes a mess everywhere. The mess gets worse, if the woman has irregular menstrual periods and cannot expect when her next period will come; as a result, menses may occur at the most inconvenient moment (i.e. wearing a dress, getting blood on the furniture in public). People who have regular menstrual periods can arrange events around their own menstrual periods to prevent embarrassing or awkward social situations. Menstruation is one big disadvantage of being human, as it mostly occurs in the Homo sapiens species. Females of other species generally have the ability to re-absorb everything.

Fortunately, men never understand the complications of menstruation, and for women, menstruation ceases with menopause. But that comes at a much later age. Some women stop bleeding around 40. Other women, like my mother, may have regular menstrual periods until their 50s. But then, my mother ages extremely slowly too.
