At some point this year or the next i wanna be working in a full time fitness environment and from a marketing and business point of view i dont really agree with this form of segregation due to political ideas
look gyms can be great places if you do them right you dont need to promote safe spaces you need to promote friendly and welcoming gym environments from staff members and other gym users helping to getting them to participate more.
Ladies you wanna life if what they refer to the "big boy section" then go ahead guys won't stop you i mean you can't avoid men all your life can you?
I mean, I'm planning on running a girls-only class at a Boys and Girls Club, because it's an astronomy and physics class and most of the girls there have told me that guys have blatantly told them to stop coming to science club, so I figured I'd run the awesomest science class ever just for the kids who are being marginalized.
It's a form of gender segregation. Imagine if we had blacks only hours, or whites only hours. They don't have the right to limit hours for certain people based on characteristics that they can't choose. They need the same standard hours, for every single body. No one is special and deserves special treatment. That's the foundation of equality.
@douride2 there shouldn't be any restrictive hours. Everyone paid equal tuition and fees for use of the gym. Plus that one hour might limit someones schedule. Maybe its the only hour they can use it on Fridays, and now they can't for the 1 percent of women who won't use the gym while men are in there. I mean it has never been a problem before, why make an issue of it?
It's discriminatory against men but if it gets more of them to work out then i guess They could split the gym into a guys and girls section for 2 hours. Or it may be better to have a power lifters and normals side since i rember When i was young feeling self conscious because the other guys in gyms where lifting more so put all the big weights in one area. Put all the big chest weights in one area and a squat rack and smaller weights in another? Though then weaker guys would get self conscious working out round mostly girls.
I feel like we should use that approach every time we deal with feminists, SJW, and shit like that. Just say you identify as a woman, that you're gay, or that you're Muslim, and they basically can't touch you. Play stupid with stupid.
It is of course sexist and to some extent this additional privilege should be reflected in the cost for memberships (e. g. it should OF COURSE cost more for women than men to buy a membership to a gym that excludes men 1/7 days of the week) but if there is a market for it, why not. If there was a market for male-only hours you'd probably see that too if gyms could get away with it.
Stupid article stupid policy, all it is going to do is run those places out of business. This is why my gym I went to and plan on going again to is a real gym, open to both men and women but is mainly dominated men, real gym not for beginners owned by a marine = golden.
Oh Carleton. Its stupid. Just because some women might feel so insecure with themselves that they can't be around men, who quite frankly, are more into their workout then women's, doesn't necessitate that all guys have to be banished for an entire hour. And really, is an hour even enough to get a good workout in? Anyone who's ever been to a gym knows the answer is no. Its a sexist policy that panders to insecurity instead of helping people get over their issues.
Honestly I'm fine with it It's just one little thing to do that helps people meet wellness goals, I don't see the problem. I'd say add men only hours too so that guys can feel more comfortable too!
They get in my way anyway. A lot of them just prance around in sexy clothing to be distracting. It's better that they herd all together like wilder beasts in their own spot.
When I'm exercizing I can get pretty warm, especially in the summer. The outfit you describe is comfortable for me.
I also wear outfits like that for yoga, & for swimming I like those athletic bikinis like you see triathletes wearing. I think they look nice on me & I like the freedom of movement they allow.
@MeghanL It helps by annoying me because they are distracting while I'm trying to focus. There are plenty of places to get male attention. The gym shouldn't be one of them.
It could also be argued that men's workout wear is distracting. The way some tank tops & muscle shirts are cut - especially the Golds Gym ones - I wonder why he even bothers putting it on.
I think all female gyms are totally fine if they're set up as such with paying members. But it's kind of bs for a university to do that since everyone is paying tuition. Also, part of university is about dealing with the fact that there are lots of different people in the world and you NEED to learn to get past the uncomfortableness of it all and live with them. Part of that is going to the gym together.
Things are only ever sexist if men do them. Remember that, kids.

This is just another symptom of today's overwhelming female entitlement and hypocrisy. Women say they want to be treated equally and fairly, but the reality is they only want that when it benefits them. They are fine with discriminating against men when they can twist thing in their minds to try to justify their own sexism.
Thank you for this excellent take, and for being one of the good ones. We need more women like you. A lot more.

I will add that this is a symptom of the increasing influence of extreme feminism on our college campuses, both among the student body and the staff, and just more proof that feminism is about sexism and discrimination against men, NOT equality as it claims.
Feminism isn't about equality at all; it's about achieving advantages for women at the expense of men's rights.
Gender specifix only hours? Thats ridiculous. My reaction would be really ugly to this as i didn't agree to it when i signed up for a year. If a few girls dont feel ok or are intimidated by tank top guys lifting weights then its their problem. There are women only gyms for those faint hearted. Plus, a person (there are guys like that too) that feels this way will probably get stomped by momma life...
Honestly, it's a life lesson. If sone guys lifting weights and minding their own business intimidate you, you're probably going to fail at life further on down the road.

I think it's a good idea, especially if women actually take advantage of that and the gym isn't empty at those hours. Men and women don't follow the same working out routines and don't have interests in attending the same classes. That way people can actually focus on their workout.

Also, it looks like this request was made in part l by the Muslim Student's Association - seems like a few hours of gym time a week is an easy and reasonable religious accommodation. Many university cafeterias serve more fish options on Fridays for Catholics during Lent, for example.
Frankly, as a moderate... the anti SJW movement is annoying too. These hypocrites are usually the first people to complain if a Christian doesn't get their way. (I also think private Christian businesses shouldn't HAVE to make "gay wedding cakes").
The hypocrisy of the new "populist" movement makes me sick. People cling to it for affirmation from the masses afraid of an inevitably changing world.
I don't know you personally, I mean in general. I also personally support LGBT rights and hope that the businesses that don't serve gay people lose business. BUT, I do feel that religious tolerance and learning to coexist has been part of America's cultural core from the start. Giving men and women separate times yo exercise for religious modesty reasons (both Muslims and some fundie Christians) for just a few hours a week seems like a friendly gesture.
For a couple of hours so that unusually religious people can exercise? It's being welcoming, not discriminatory. The other 90% of the time everyone is welcome...

Talking about ridiculous. What next, women only classes because someone might feel uncomfortable asking a question in front of men?
I feel like those already exist
I mean, I'm planning on running a girls-only class at a Boys and Girls Club, because it's an astronomy and physics class and most of the girls there have told me that guys have blatantly told them to stop coming to science club, so I figured I'd run the awesomest science class ever just for the kids who are being marginalized.
"most of the girls there have told me that guys have blatantly told them to stop coming to science club" WTF? That's unbelievable.
Yup, I was pretty surprised as well

How about a guys only hr. then listen to them scream.
@douride2 there shouldn't be any restrictive hours. Everyone paid equal tuition and fees for use of the gym. Plus that one hour might limit someones schedule. And you're right about that
I agree with you. It was what I was getting at. go to a woman's only gym then.
@douride2 exactly.
It's discriminatory against men but if it gets more of them to work out then i guess They could split the gym into a guys and girls section for 2 hours.

I'd walk in and say I identify as a woman just to see what they do.
I'd love to see that happen! With all the shit on campuses about gender-neutral bullshit, that would be a PR nightmare and amazing to watch play out.
I feel like we should use that approach every time we deal with feminists, SJW, and shit like that. Just say you identify as a woman, that you're gay, or that you're Muslim, and they basically can't touch you.

Pretty much @Chico_brah (s) comment.

Yeah, it's stupid but whatever.
They get in my way anyway. A lot of them just prance around in sexy clothing to be distracting. It's better that they herd all together like wilder beasts in their own spot.
I've never understood why you would want to just wear a sports bra and skin-tight pants when working out anyway
@MeghanL The women at my gym oil up before working out. haha, do you do that?
No, not for that.
My skin gets shiny from perspiration, though. Does that help?
@MeghanL It helps by annoying me because they are distracting while I'm trying to focus. There are plenty of places to get male attention. The gym shouldn't be one of them.

Right, but a few hours a week at the gym aren't that big of deal.

The hypocrisy of the new "populist" movement makes me sick. People cling to it for affirmation from the masses afraid of an inevitably changing world.
I'm not anti-SJW. If you met me irl you'd assume I'm an SJW (I'm bisexual, emo, and atheist) I just deeply care about equal opertunities
I do think that Christian bakeries should have to make gay wedding cakes. It's a fucking cake, for the love of god
I don't know you personally, I mean in general. I also personally support LGBT rights and hope that the businesses that don't serve gay people lose business. The school only has one, that was the point. Nobody is forcing them, they did it as a generous gesture.
If there is only one gym, segregating it is just discriminatory

"unusually religious people can exercise" is the key. If they are uncomfortable due to their religion, they can frequent a women's only gym
Off campus.
Just wait until all the butt-hurt feminists start complaining about rape-culture and men staring at them.
So do they also have male only gym times to. You know for the poor soles who can't contend with being in the same area as a woman?
Haha, you I like
Thanks.
I would just identify as a woman because genderfluid argument. So they need to let me work out at bitch hour.
They are gonna make the rules im gonna fuck the rules.
