7 Answered Questions About Me Being Asian

I decided to create this myTake for fun, since I think it will serve as an informational one.

1. "Do you play instruments invented in Asia?"

Answer: I haven't touched one, so I haven't played one. However, I've seen several ethnic instruments in person (mostly in museums) but I never really had the guts to touch them personally.

This question has a point because Asian instruments like these are rarely seen in popular culture except in Asian-themed movies, games, books, and series. These instruments are hardly even noticed by the general public, which is quite of bothersome and melancholic at the same time since we are supposed to nurture them as a society.

2. "Can you deal with a day without rice?"

Long Answer: I can't always rely on other sources of carbohydrates (like bread, for example) to have something to eat. Moreover, I could say most people I know wouldn't deal with a day with no rice; they'll always be looking for rice at any time of the day.

Short Answer: No.

Whether white or brown, rice will never be out of most Asians' diets. When not paired with meat other viands, rice can be enjoyed in many forms: porridge or even delicacies.

That's a rice porridge in chocolate flavor called champorado.

3. "Can we come inside your house with our shoes on?"

Answer: OH NO PLEASE TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF BEFORE ENTERING. I find it disgusting for people to freely walk on the clean floor with their shoes on inside the house. Socks are allowed inside but footwear that are worn with direct contact on the ground are not allowed inside.

When I visit other houses, I take my shoes off as a sign of respect (primarily to keep their floor clean and to identify myself as a visitor).This is true for most people I know.

4. "Why is your country predominantly Christian unlike other Asian countries?"

Answer: Spain's influence.

I had talked with this guy at school about other stuff when he brought up the topic about religion.

Before the Spanish colonial times, inhabitants of the Philippines used to be pagan, for they used to worship nature-- the sun, the trees, and the bodies of water, for example.

I'm among the rare Christians. While majority of Filipinos are Roman Catholic, I am a Protestant. I was baptized before I even had my first, vivid memory.

5. "How do you Asians deal with strict parents?"

Answer: Strict parents? That's a pretty accurate stereotype. Most of us simply conform to avoid any fiasco from happening. Since I'm still a minor, I obey everything my parents tell me, provided that they tell me to do them all for my own safety and benefit.

6. "Why do you speak English so well?"

I was asked this question with a sarcastic tone so I was triggered at first. Hence, I responded somewhere along these lines:

Initial Answer: "Sorry, it must be my bad for butchering the universal language."

Later, I got the original intention of the question, which was actually asking for the reasons why I communicate in English fairly decent.

Final Answer: I do? Exposure and daily application of the language, I guess, play as important factors with my skills, if that's what you mean.

7. "Can you eat using chopsticks?"

Answer: I can't.

I cannot eat with chopsticks. I'm not eating with chopsticks because I'm not raised in doing it. I eat my meals with a spoon and a fork.

Sometimes, I eat my meal with a spork.

1: I've played them in school before , mostly concussion instruments tho. Also , the gong is not a musical instrument lol
2: Yes. I've never really liked rice , I'm more of a noodles and potatoes kinda guy. Rice takes too much chewing and I'm a lazy bastard.
3: I'd prefer people to take off their shoes and leave them at the shoe rack before coming in. There's a welcome mat outside, clean your soles , take off your shoes and then come on in. Leave the pollution outside.
4: My "country "is predominantly atheist but people are still somewhat superstitious.
5: They are as strict as people think. They pretty much let me do my own thing , as long as I bring the grades home , I can do whatever I want.
6: Cartoon Network. I watched A LOT of Cartoon Network. Also I grew up in a pretty ethnically and culturally diverse neighborhood , we had germans , russians , japanese , chinese , hongkongers , Canadians , the lot. English is the go-to tongue in mixed company , which is always.
7: Yes. Funnily enough my parents taught me the wrong way to use chopsticks , I had to relearn it myself when I was 16. Tho I much prefer using knife and forks. Much simpler to use.

I learned the Chinese bamboo flute once, that Shit is so fucking loud! You play it on the first floor, people on the third floor about 5 rooms away can hear it. And so not easy to play. You have to put an extremely thin membrane (like the epidermis of your thumb) to cover a hole. And this super thin membrane cannot get damaged, or creased when sticking it on the flute. It has to have the perfect tension or otherwise the sound will be different. And then, a flute only has 1 sound. The complete set consists of 12 flutes. Depending on the song, you may need a different flute every time or sometimes 2 flutes for 1 song

Always found people from the Philippines different from other Asians. The key characteristic is the endearing smile that always adorns their faces and how they always kicked my ass in Badminton. They seem to have a great free spirited nature away from the seriousness of others.

I think the huge Asian influence is what makes Australia so great with it adding so much multicultural colour to the landscape

While I partly agree with you, we do seem to be getting more than our share of Asians, i think you're a little too strong about this.

They have as much right to be here as we do, unless you're an abo, we have no right in saying who can and can't be here, considering our history.

the aboriginals were here 1st but they didn't do anything with the land, they didn't build modern Australia, why should we acknowledge them?

The shoes thing is SO TRUE.

When I was young, I never understood how it was acceptable for white people to walk around their house with shoes on.

Your shoes literally have dirt on them from the outside, and you're bringing them in your home. Some people even do that to the rooms of their carpets.

There's one more notorious question... That I'm sure is asked EVERYTIME.

"Can you speak mandarin/Japanese/Korean?" (Depending on what you told them you were)

Champorado is chocolate porridge? On the surface that sounds delicious but the picture didn't look as appetizing.

That's how it really looks in real life and it tastes bitter unless you add "sweeteners" because champorado's flavor is derived from natural cocoa beans. :D

@Azgeda pacific islanders shouldn't be classified as Asian because they are mixed with several different races including aboriginal, African, Asian and Spanish.
i used to go to a philipino church and the pastor's daughter made a speech about it to the congregation.

Was this girl at the church filipino-american by any chance? Because the only filipinos i've seen confused as to whether they're filipino or pacific islander are filipino-americans. Because filipinos from the Philippines almost always say they're Asian. Most filipinos don't even have Spanish blood, by the way. They're looks remind me a lot of malaysians.

@springocelot she was born in the philipines and then moved to america with her family and was majoring in cultural studies in uni at the time. she apparently had been doing research on her lineage and culture and was very passionate about it. the part about african/aboriginal blood didn't go over many of the elders. i don't see the problem with it. some of the aboriginals in japan were of the D haplogroup which is called ”short African man”

I won a competition in science, way back in year 8, in using chopsticks.

I have absolutely no idea HOW I won because I cannot use chopsticks to save my life XD

Picking up various items with chopsticks.

Teacher brought in some lollies to give to the winner so we got to try and pick up the bag, a few different bits of science equipment (those were easy, so many nooks and crannys) i think the hardest thing to pick up was a test tube (it was plastic so wouldn't break if dropped).

I won the lollies and bragging rights.

It was just a class game really, after that the teacher asked us if anyone wanted to blow up the sheep lungs shed brought in, so we could see how lungs worked.
