I made my poor ex-girlfriend visit their basilica in Florence any take a bunch of pictures. They're like the Tudors of Italy.
I research the family online and the basilica looks beautiful. You should definitely try the show. It's a little dramatic in terms of personal relationships, but I don't mind it because it doesn't run the show and it reveals a different perspective on the characters. It's totally accurate in terms of who he interacts with and political dealings. After I finish the first season, I'm going to watch the Tudors while I wait for the second season.
Yeah they hired a lot of musicians, artists, and renaissance men including Leonardo da Vinci who hid in their cellars after rumors that he was gay and his opposition to the Catholic Church forced him into hiding. the basilica contains all of the Medici bones, including Catherine de Medici, my favorite, who was the wife of the late Philip of France and was responsible for the ever infamous St, Bartholomews day massacre. Philip died during a jousting match and left her as heiress to the French Throne.

What is the premise of the show?
It's set in 15th century Florence. The protagonist, Cosimo was elected head of the Florentine republic. He also inherited the bank of Medici from his father who was poisoned under mysterious circumstances. It was originally broadcast in Italy but now it's available on Netflix in English.
