Washington never wanted a monument either. Washington owned slaves too and like Lee was a traitor and rebeled against the government he had sworn allegiance too. Really all staues and monuments to the racist first president should be torn down too.
if this triggered you i'm sorry. as far as i see this site is all about conversation. if you can't read this without being pissed as opposed to just reflecting on the merit that's on you. but i don't see a lot of arguing going on here at all
i've been on this site long enough and interacted long enough for you to know that i am no troll. sorry if the thoughts of robert e lee triggered you. i don't see anyone else bitching or complaining... so if you don't like it then go away. if the thoughts of a man who led the confederacy 150 years ago bothers you so much then go away. if considering whether or not monuments should be removed bothers you so much... you guess it... then go away
Hitler was an animal activist, championed for women's rights and helped people quit smoking. Yet any thinking person would be offended if you started talking about how it was wrong for Germany to take down his statue. You're either a troll or extremely ignorant.
I'm sorry that facts seem like trolling to you. There were tons of statues of Hitler in Germany, but now they're gone because he was a horrible human being just like Robert E Lee had horrible political views. Do you understand basic analogies and logic?
I... swear by Almighty God (do solemnly, and truly declare and affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty Queen George III, His Heirs and Successors, and that I will, as in duty bound, honestly and faithfully defend His Majesty, His Heirs and Successors, in Person, Crown and Dignity against all enemies, and will observe and obey all orders of His Majesty, His Heirs and Successors, and of the (generals) and officers set over me. The Oath of George Washington to the British Sovereign. In law, treason is the crime that covers some of the more extreme acts against one's nation or sovereign. Treason against the king was known as high treason and treason against a lesser superior was petty treason. A person who commits treason is known in law as a traitor.
At times, the term traitor has been used as a political epithet, regardless of any verifiable treasonable action. In a civil war or insurrection, the winners may deem the losers to be traitors. Likewise the term traitor is used in heated political discussion – typically as a slur against political dissidents, or against officials in power who are perceived as failing to act in the best interest of their constituents. In certain cases, as with the Dolchstoßlegende (Stab-in-the-back myth), the accusation of treason towards a large group of people can be a unifying political message.
he didn't betray the confederacy he betrayed the Union and said as much as to why confederate monuments shouldn't stand... because the confederacy was a traitorous group to the USA
george washington was a traitor to England as was the entire USA. so the USA does not see washington as a traitor.
i'm not going to argue about this clear point. can you understand this point? a traitor is only viewed in a negative light to the groups he betrays but the groups he defends he is not a traitor but a fighter and advocate of their beliefs. understand?
I understand but it doesn't change what a traitor is regardless of your feelings. What your basically saying is that yes Washington was a traitor but he was our traitor.
precisely. this isn't about my feelings it's about the clearly recognized feelings of the vast majority of americans who view george washington as a hero.
and thus there are no monuments of him in the nation to which he was a traitor. but to the nation who do not view him as a traitor there are monuments
the confederacy was a traitorous nation and was called as much by the USA and Robert E. Lee himself. and thus his belief was that confederate monuments shouldn't stand
you can argue that washington was a traitor all you want. and yes technically he was but to one side he is not seen that at all so it's a pointless argument to have
There are. There's a monument in DC. If the confederacy is a traitorous nation then so is the united states. You try to reword it how you want but the only difference between Washington and Lee is the side of the coin you are on. Both traitors in traitorous nations. Also if you refer to the confederacy as a nation then your acknowledging it's right to exist.
the confederacy is not a nation. it does not exist. the USA does exist. it is a traitorous nation to England but obviously americans don't feel this way.
yes the USA are traitors to England but we honor our struggle because we believed in it. it's a wholly different situation and i'm sorry if you can't see the very simple differences between memorials to a traitorous nation on the soil they rebelled against vs. memorials to a traitorous nation on the soil they fought, won and now call their own
@jacquesvol Lee lost so was a loser. @madhatters4 so what your saying is that both Washington and Lee were both traitors and heroes and all that separates them in your mind is victory. Lee was just following in the founding fathers footsteps with rebellion and slavery.
in a sense yes. lee was a leader of a rebellious "nation" that lost, so there is nothing to suggest that notions of that fallen nation deserve to exist. washington was the leader of a rebellious nation that won so it only makes sense that monuments to his struggle (which is the county's struggle) exist.
i'm not necessarily in favor of keeping the statues of confederate soldiers and what not but from what i know Robert E. Lee was not a racist. he freed all the slaves on the plantation he and his wife inherited from his father in-law. he started a school to educate black children at a time when it was illegal to do so and he politically supported free blacks in their creation of Liberia... again i'm not necessarily against removal of these statues but just wanted to point out that Lee was not your carbon copy confederate

6 downvoters are support monument valley to slave owners
I think they should be left alone, people act like taking them down will erase the past but it won't.
I am against the removal of historical memorials like this.
Society needs to progress to a stage where they are seen in their correct context.
You sir are purposely trying to piss people off and incite arguments. The very definition of a troll.
if this triggered you i'm sorry. as far as i see this site is all about conversation. if you can't read this without being pissed as opposed to just reflecting on the merit that's on you. but i don't see a lot of arguing going on here at all
certainly no more than liberals are cucks posts or trump is a neo nazi posts
it clearly triggered some people as you intended. You just wanted attention like every troll.

ok so you're trolling me huh? there isn't a single statue of hitler in germany
I'm sorry that facts seem like trolling to you. There were tons of statues of Hitler in Germany, but now they're gone because he was a horrible human being just like Robert E Lee had horrible political views.
Do you understand basic analogies and logic?
well i've tolerated you enough. good riddance
Goodtake. All monuments to racists, slave owners and traitors should be tore down.
george washington was not a traitor. he legally owned slaves. the confederacy was a traitorous group.
it's a different matter all together regarding the moral issue of owning slaves and honoring and memorializing a traitorous uprising
I... swear by Almighty God (do solemnly, and truly declare and affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty Queen George III, His Heirs and Successors, and that I will, as in duty bound, honestly and faithfully defend His Majesty, His Heirs and Successors, in Person, Crown and Dignity against all enemies, and will observe and obey all orders of His Majesty, His Heirs and Successors, and of the (generals) and officers set over me.

he was a traitor to the British yes. is america under the rule of the queen? no so he wasn't a traitor to the USA.
A traitor is stil a traitor no matter who he betrays. Robert E Lee did not betray the confederacy. The two are the same rebel traitors.
he didn't betray the confederacy he betrayed the Union and said as much as to why confederate monuments shouldn't stand... because the confederacy was a traitorous group to the USA

Robert E. Lee was a racist. Get rid of his statue. We need to put statues of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X in his place!
i'm not necessarily in favor of keeping the statues of confederate soldiers and what not but from what i know Robert E.
