It's been about 50/50 in my experience. Some people get uncomfortable when I ask and others are actually proud to say it. Sometimes they even ask ME where I'm from especially if I know a lot about their country.
When I talk about problems related with society or feminism. If I talk about a global issue and people try to highlight my nation in that case, I get annoyed. If I actually talk about something particular to my country, I don't mind.
When I give answers to sexual and health questions with biological reference and people ask me my country cause I know so much. We may have a lower literacy rate but it doesn't mean that we are all uneducated and don't know science at all. I will give you one example. It happened when I was new here.
In one question I mentioned something about the average size of a penis. The asker asked me if I know the average size and I said it correctly. He was impressed that I know the average size at this age and asked me where I'm from. I told him my country and he replied "Wow. Never knew that there are people from Bangladesh on the internet who know these things. I thought they have no connection with the world" give me a reason that I should not get pissed off.
Sometimes the asker ask further after that question and then it can turn out wrong. If the asker ask the person where s/he's from and s/he's answering, then the asker shouldn't believe the person is lying and ask further: "Where are you really from?". That's the problem with the question.
I think as long on one asks in a arrogant way I think its fine. But often times people really need to quit with getting all sensitive too. PC has gotten too ridiculous.
Never bothered me. Mind you, saying, "where are you from" is very poor phrasing.

Well im from pakistan and since most people dont like us its pretty hard to be honest about were im from espeacialy since im muslim. Im not ashamed of it but there is always pressure.
That's when you start making up things,... I used to move around a lot as a child, and I used to get asked this a lot. One child I had convinced I was an alien 👽. He was giving me sideway looks for months.. so so funny.
Lol yea. There first guess is always India then il them that but never denied my religion. But the whole thing is a shame. I think alien is more suitable :-)
I have learnt that most people are idiots when it comes to race and culture. I have olive skin, and most of the time, I went to schools that were predominantly white. In summer, I loved playing out in the sun, and would get really dark. I was always asked by my new teacher what culture I was. I am like half English- Australian, quarter African- American, and another quarter Italian. To complex to go into in a normal discussion.

I agree, but since I'm white and ethnicitially Swedish people assume I'm a liberal and a feminist and your ultimate sjw.
They're special snowflakes, I enjoy it when people ask where I'm from. It's awesome and I'm mixed, so of course I look different.
it doesn't bother me unless it has more exclusivity
I mind or don't mind it depending on the situation.
Which situations?

I noticed that people underestimate the condition of people in our country way too much. We are a lot more liberal than what people think of us.
People tend to go by stereotypes. When I was in Africa, I noticed Masai herdsmen standing in fields with their goats, talking on cellphones.
I wouldn't be offended if when people asked 'Where are you really from?' they didn't fall into questions and comments which are stereotypical and rude
If you get offended by a question as simple as ''Where are you from?'', that's a problem on your behalf.

Lol. Only Liberal snowflakes get offended by that question.
I don't think it should be a big issue unless people get rude asking it.
Never bothered me. Mind you, saying, "where are you from" is very poor phrasing.

This is stupid. Just ask what you really mean. That solves this entire post.

Liberal types just LOVE to get offended at any opportunity.
Said the anonymous poster.
Haha!!!
@RolandCuthbert It's a true statement regardless.
@Charleslvajr No. It is not. This person makes a post but hides his/her identity to avoid confrontation.
That is absolutely hilarious!
@RolandCuthbert Ohh, offended. K
