Here's How to Stop School Shootings

It is very sad and unfortunate that children and even adults have to worry about whether or not they are going to die while attending school. I would say that ever since the Columbine shooting, there has been an exponential growth in school shootings in the US. After the tragic Parkland shooting, high school students have decided to take charge in creating a safe environment for schools across the country by participating in the national school walk-out and participating in the march for our lives event. Politics have even begun to take a presence in this with the left saying to ban all assault rifles while the right saying to arm teachers and school staff with guns. This is the first time where I think both sides are being stupid. Although some form of gun control needs to be present (which I'll talk about later), banning all assault rifles is not a smart idea, as it strips a person's freedom and rights. Arming teachers and school staff with guns is even more stupid because these people are teachers/faculty members, not soldiers. In this take, I will be talking about my proposal to end (or at least significantly reduce) school shootings. Let's start of with the gun control part.

I believe that there needs to be a slight reform in gun control. My proposition is to ban high powered and high capacity assault rifles from being in gun owner's homes. They would be legally allowed to own these guns, however they must keep these guns in a safe at the local gun dealership and/or gun range. That way, those who own these guns cannot be stolen, or the gun owners themselves cannot go and kill a large amount of people. I'm not sure if this law is 100% in place already, but I know that there are some states that allow gun owners to keep their high powered rifles in their homes. As a result, both political sides can be satisfied because it ensures that there are no legally owned assault rifles in the public while also not taking away gun owner's rights. The only loophole to this would be if the mentally insane were to get their hands on these guns illegally.

Now onto the real proposition. Instead of focusing on guns, we need to focus on the people who are shooting these guns at people in schools. My proposition is to create a program that questions and rehabilitates people who are believed to be planning a school shooting. The easiest and most effective place to put this program is within the school system, since most school shooters are either students themselves or were students at one point.

This is how the program would work. If a student, teacher, or any faculty member were to witness any signs of a student being a potential school shooter (i.e. talks about murder a lot, aggressive behavior, threatens to kill another student(s), etc...), then they can report the student to a higher-up faculty member to put him/her into this school shooter awareness program. Then, they will be questioned about any threats made towards other students, whether or not he owns any guns, etc. The student's parents would be notified if he were to be put into this program as well. If he were to show signs of becoming a potential school shooter, then he would be placed into rehabilitation to hopefully, fix his problems whether they be mental problems, problems at home, or with other students.

I know what you're thinking, why help the bastard and not expel him? Here's why expelling him won't help the situation. Expelling the potential shooter will only make him/her more angry and want to shoot up the school even more. Just because he isn't allowed on school property anymore doesn't mean that he won't shoot up the school. Instead of outcasting the potential shooter, we need to help rehabilitate them and keep them under watch. If it has been proven that the potential school shooter has mental issues, then he can be sent away to a mental hospital where he can get the proper help he/she needs.

While I admire that teens across the country are participating in an effort to stop school shootings, they are not going about it the right way. Firstly, a school walk-out isn't going to do jack shit. The government isn't going to go "oh look, these students are walking out of school to make a statement, better listen to what they say because you know, these students know everything about politics!" The government isn't going to listen to some teenager's proposition to end school shootings. If the government were to listen to people under the age of 18, the legal drinking age would be 16 by now.

The March For Our Lives event that took place in Washington D.C. was a good start to their campaign, however their agenda was idiotic. I feel like most of the people marching in that event have absolutely no knowledge of guns at all. I'm not a weapon's specialist either, but I know more about guns than the people marching at that event. They have this agenda of "AR-15'S R BAD, BAN THEM!", but do not know that there are different guns that take the same caliber of bullet that the AR-15 takes. So if they were to have the agenda of banning high caliber guns from the face of the US (which isn't a good agenda), then shouldn't they be calling for the ban of the other guns who use the same caliber bullet? The fact that most of the people marching in that event do not have a knowledge of guns only discredits their agenda in the government's eyes.

They also fail to realize that the president is republican and the majority of congress is also republican. They should be proposing a proposition that appeals to their republican ideals (and also keeping some of their liberal ideals if they wish), while still calling for an end to school shootings. Calling a ban on guns to a group of people who are mostly pro-gun is stupid in itself. That's like proposing a business plan to your boss knowing that your boss isn't going to like it. You can still try and propose the plan, but what are the odds that the boss is going to go through with your plan? Not very likely.

What the leaders of this movement need to do is get a large adult following, larger than the teenager following, so that way the government will at least turn an eye to the movement. Then, you need those adults to be educated in guns and more specifically, gun rights, so that the government can see this and say "hey, maybe we should listen to them, these people know what they are talking about." Then you need to make an ACTUAL EDUCATED PROPOSITION about how to end school shootings. It doesn't even need to specifically be my proposition, it just needs to make sense and appeal to the masses and the government. A bonus tip would be to start a petition (I'm not sure if one is already in place, but if there isn't one there needs to be one) so it can gain more attention.

So there you have it. My proposition to end school shootings and even some advice for the leaders of this movement. What these kids are doing is awesome, but they need a better agenda and a better plan in order for change to be in place. However, Columbine does mark the modern age, where mass killers have nearly all been on psych drugs.

There are anywhere from 10 to 15 million AR-15 type guns owned. In any given year, typically less than 100 people are murdered with them. That is 0.0007% chance. The chance of dying in a car crash in a year is 0.06%, almost 100 TIMES higher. A disproportionate number of those killer drivers are teenagers. Teenage drivers kill more innocent people than do AR-15s, many times more. If teens want to save lives, they should be demanding raising the driving age to 21. Meanwhile, of those AR-15 gun owners, something like 99.99975% of them are NOT going to murder someone this year.

Your approach is like looking for a needle in a haystack by using a bucket loader to move the hay. Something that affects the needle without affecting the hay is the way to go, you need the analogy to a magnet. That is not your proposal.

School officials and law enforcement can keep track of the student or ex student that is in the program. The FBI has Cruz on watch, but didn’t care enough to be concerned, neither was the school he came from. That’s the issue. With an actual program setup, we can hire people who are specialized in this line of work.

It is difficult to arrest a guy for making a threat without hard evidence. This rehab can be a way from not going to prison and helping the potential shooter become a better person.

Rednecks as well as blue bloods from the east coast use shotguns to shoot clay pigeons. So much to learn. Some use AR-15s for hunting with a 3 to 5 round magazine, depending on state law. Others have a 30 to 100 round magazine for self defense. Even in a big city, you cannot expect the police to respond quickly enough to every 911 call. In rural areas, the nearest squad car may be 20 miles away. There is no such thing as the Bill of Needs. A 5 foot woman doesn't need a huge SUV (potential killing machine), yet I see them all the time in a big city. The agenda is clear. This is no longer about banning AR-15s. The mission is confiscation all the way. To do that they will need a national police force with FIREARMS. Chances are that most members of such a force would be young adults from the city with no firearms experience whatsoever. If that scenario ever comes to fruition, would you care to speculate on any possible outcomes?

School shootings are not what's scaring the kids. It's the media, politicians, parents, people writing about it, and the students themselves that are scaring the kids. The odds of getting killed in a school shooting are so extremely low that it's totally insignificant.

The odds of a kid getting hit by lightning are literally higher than getting killed in a school shooting. Think about that. What if the media went on and on about getting hit by lightning to the point that kids are afraid to go outside? Schools are actually one of the safest places for a kid to be. Yet with all the attention given to these shootings, you'd never guess that.

These shootings are totally blown out of proportion. The attention given is far out of proportion compared to all the other ways a kid can get killed.

What always amazes me about this debate is that the people who are against guns don't know anything about guns. They consistently show their total ignorance about the subject. Then they refuse to listen to people who do know something about it.

Case in point:

Two mistakes here. By definition an assault rifle is NOT high power. Assault rifles were intentionally designed to be lower power than the rifles from a previous era that they replaced. An M16 / AR-15 has less than half the muzzle energy than the rifles were used in WW2 through the early 60s.

The second mistake is that assault rifles are already illegal to buy. There are some legacy assault rifles floating around that are legal. They can be transferred to someone else under VERY strict circumstances with a lot of red tape.

By the way, an AR-15 is NOT an assault rifle. It's just a regular rifle. An assault rifle is selective fire (among other things). Selective fire means it can be fired in single shot mode, or switched to either burst mode or full auto. You can NOT buy those, and haven't been able to for more than thirty years. An AR-15 is not selective fire. It can only be fired in single shot mode.

Also, an AR-15 is NOT high caliber. It's one of the smallest caliber rounds there are. By the way, caliber basically means the diameter of the bullet in inches. So a.223 means.223 inch diameter. That's only a measure of the diameter, not the length or mass.

So what do I think should be done about school shootings? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Stop talking about it. It's all the talk that's scaring the kids. So stop it. The problem is quite obviously a social issue. Social issues can be quite complex, and just about impossible to identify. But people need something to point fingers at. Never mind that they point fingers at something they know nothing about, nor even have a logical argument for it. The heck with facts and logic, as long as they can point their fingers - as long as politicians can "appear" to be doing something whether it actually does anything or not.

1. Bombs. Boston marathon, unibomber etc. The fact is their is no way you can stop a person to kill. If you make these changes, lets say even out right ban guns, what can that do? If murder is illegal then by default IF laws stopped people then the fact that its illegal to kill would make it redundant to outlaw guns. However, murder being illegal has not stopped murder so why would any one make the assumption that any kind of gun law would stop some one if they are already willing to break the biggest law we have? They won't. So any law made that restricts guns in any way can ONLY affect law abiding citizens, that's it no one else.
2. Teachers being properly trained to use a gun is perfectly reasonable. Life guards and paramedics are not doctors, doesn't mean that them knowing CPR is a bad thing. Further more studies have shown that those who have training specifically for high stress situations are far more likely to remain calm and collected in those high stress situations i. e. when their are car accidents, people who have had first aid training are actually MORE likely to respond to the situation and provide much needed aid and help then some one who is not trained at all. This mitigates the damage done. So training teachers would make them able to function significantly better under duress and as such improves the odds that not only they but their students have increased probability of surviving even if they never have to use the gun. Further more to claim that they shouldn't learn because they are not soldiers is also a rather absurd argument, essentially your arguing that they should just allow themselves and their students to die instead of try to defend themselves and their students. What other alternative is their? Either they defend or they submit and if some one intends on killing you submission means death. At least with training their chances of surviving increases dramatically and again, so does the survival of the children they are with.
3. Yes we should absolutely focus on the people as they are the ones commiting the crimes. I would point out that the reason why most use guns is a sense of helplessness and guns bring them a sense of power and control so an actual program to teach them self defense would probably yield high results (and have similar affects as training teachers to use guns (in Japan they already teach students how to deal with potential intruders and threats, seems to work well for them).

4. it is true that the government isn't going to listen to teenagers, but would you want them to? A fifteen year old has no idea how the world, society or people work, they are completely ignorant (in the words of Dr. Jordan Peterson, "Your a child, what the hell do you know?"). So this walk out is nothing more then an emotional appeal, a way of masking the real issue, in short do gun laws work, it instead turns it into "if you are not for getting rid of guns then you hate children". The fact is we know that gun laws do not work, no evidence has been shown to prove that and some evidence has been shown that shows they actually make the situation worse (the vast majority of gun violence occurs in areas that have the most restrictions on guns (like Chicago for example)).
5. So again, the issue is not and never will be guns, people where murdering long before guns existed and continue to do so in countries that have outright banned guns. It also ignores why we have the second amendment.

First of all, let me tell you right off the bat that I absolutely hate guns. I have no use for them in my life and don't really understand people who have such a fetish for them. But your ideas are slightly flawed.

First, you propose keeping guns locked up in gun stores. Ok. But really, why bother? If I want to go on a killing spree, all I need to do is go to the store where I have my legally purchased guns stored, tell the clerk I'm going to a shooting range, and then take my gun to wherever I intend to cause mayhem. Keeping them in a store won't stop anyone from using them. It would just make me a little bit more pissed off that I now have to drive across town before I can go on my rampage, thus making me a tad more dangerous than I was before.

Giving teachers or possibly even other students the power to throw oddball students into a therapy session is just asking for trouble. There is way too much room for abuse. A teacher could easily get rid of that class clown, that little bastard who is always disrupting the class in one way or another, even though the kid is harmless and the teacher knows it. Other students could start spreading rumors about the unpopular kid with the Star Wars obsession, the kid no one likes because they all secretly think he is smarter than they are.

Frankly, these assault rifles that everyone is so upset about aren't even the real problem. Yes, they are the weapons that make the news. But far more death are caused annually by handguns. They are small and portable, easily concealed. They are the weapon of choice for real killers. By real killers I mean the ones who aren't stark raving mad, the ones who are cool and collected and cold as ice. They break into people's homes and kill homeowners for a TV. They kill members of opposing gangs without the slightest twinge of guilt. They may not kill twenty or thirty people at once but over the course of a year they kill a lot more.

The reason all the left wing's attacks on guns have failed is because they are going about it in entirely the wrong way. Eventually they'll get their shit together but until then, the right wing will prevail and countless lives will continue to be lost to guns every year.

*End schools as gun free/target practice zones
*Rigidly enforce all existing gun laws.
*Armed Resource Officers. Preferably trained and retired cops and military.
Metal detectors at all egress.

I agree with some of this. But I also believe that schools should take basic secirity measures such as a secure peremiter fence with a gate and a locked door with a security guard. I think it's ludicrous that virtually anyone can walk in off the street to most schools.
Another major problem seems to be the iresponsibility of the people who actually own the guns the parents as it seems in most school shootings the kid was able to just walk out of his parents home armed to the teeth.
Then there's the gun registration which so many seem to slip by. They should start to follow closely the German model where police can turn up at anytime and check that in your home your guns are securely stored away in a gun safe.
I don't think there will be change because neither republicans or democrats want change. Republicans don't want to kiss off the people who vote for them and the democrats will give lip service to gun control measures but ultimately mass shootings are political gold for democrat politicians when it comes to election time. Yes, the FBI are more qualified, however there is no real program in place to watch school shooters. The FBI keeps track of things that are posted online, but what about in-school or out of school threats that weren’t posted on the internet? Rehabilitation as in rehabilitating those who have obvious mental issues. If such signs of a school shooter are prevalent, then that would mean that something is going on with them. Yes rehab for anger exists and so do therapists, but there is no program put in place that keeps a watchful eye on those who are potential school shooters. If the therapists were a part of the program, they would be able to report back the progress.

Also about your owning assault rifles comment, there is no need to even have an assault rifle in your home in the first place. Owning the gun does not mean that you have to keep it in your home. Renting means that you have a continuous payment. If you buy an assault rifle, that would mean that you have legal ownership of the gun and that you pay all of the money upfront. I think there should be a better screening process of people who want to purchase high powered rifles as opposed to say hand guns or shot guns. Like there should be a better mental illness or competency test/mental health test on people who request to own a high powered rifle, at least. I agree with everything you've stated here! I don't think that teachers should be trained to use a gun in the event of a school shooting, unless they have prior military experience. One time in school when we were having a lock down drill they didn't tell us there would be a lockdown drill. I was in the classroom where the teacher served two tours in Iraq and we all felt safer because of that. The students frequently had conversations that we would want to be in his classroom if a shooting were to occur. But even then, teachers shouldn't be armed. The only thing I don't get is why SRO's are only permitted a taser on campus? Our SRO worked at the school and as a normal officer. While working elsewhere he had a gun, but at school he's only allowed a taser. Officers have been trained to use a gun and should be allowed to have their weapon on them even if they're working at a school. SRO's should be trained in using their guns specifically for if a shooting were to occur.

The teachers with guns issue, is a states rights matter. Some Texas schools in rural areas have done this for years. What works for NYC might not work in other parts of the country. South-side Chicago students commiserated with the Parkland students as well they should. The sad fact, however, is that Chicago had already banned AR-15s and pistols, and they still have a murder rate that is sky high.

The Maryland shooter was taken down by Security so armed personnel do work. Obviously not all school staff know how to use a gun.

If the FBI refuse to act on knowledge after receiving multiple tips it makes me question if these students will get sent to this "rehab" after multiple tips. All schools being incompetent is what started me on the path of conservatism.

the caliber is only a small part of the lethality of a weapon by the way. The velocity of the rounds matters tremendously. An ar-15 does more damage than handguns because (like many other rifles) the speed of the bullet creates shockwaves through the target destroying tissue.

The most notable difference between the ar-15 and other rifles is the reload time is very short.

Weekly one on one and group sessions with the school counselor; between classes that will help students, teachers, faculty and staff to air out their grievances in school about how they feel, if you are bullying how to combat that is to quietly send the aggressor in the office with the counselor and the

I have heard so many different proposals to address the symptoms of this, but no one knows what the underlying cause is. And until we understand why this is happening we will not stop violent attacks in our schools. I've heard 5 different theories but no actual study, no close look at what creates a school shooter. There are a lot of reasons why 18 year olds are still in school with minors lol
-Being born earlier in the year
-Mentally handicapped or disabled (I believe 20 or 21 is the maximum age for a mentally handicapped adult to be in public school, from what my state has declared)
-Failed a grade at the start of their school career.

I actually know a large majority of students in highschool that have arranged the walkouts themselves and also spoke to the principal and superintendent of their schools and ended up letting them participate in the walk out. Check all over social media. These kids WANTED to participate in this walkout. How will a woman’s feminist group be able to arrange this? Please tell me, because so far, I haven’t seen any indication that the walkouts that we’re held were organized by the feminist movement.
