New York Daily News Layoffs Ax Half The Newsroom Staff

The New York Daily News, a storied big-city tabloid known for its ruthless and splashy front pages, laid off half its newsroom staff on Monday, marking the latest round of cuts at the beleaguered Tronc company’s media holdings.
“We are fundamentally restructuring the Daily News,” an email from Tronc to the staff reads. “We are reducing today the size of the editorial team by approximately 50 percent and re-focusing much of our talent on breaking news — especially in areas of crime, civil justice and public responsibility.” The paper had about 85 newsroom employees prior to the cuts, according to the New York Post.
The notice said human resources would notify those affected by day’s end. As reporters and editors waited, some were seen going around the newsroom, thanking each other for their work. “Just trying to make the best of it,” a staffer said.

So why is this important?

I want my child to know what a newspaper is. to read the words and see the print on the paper, not words on an LED screen. Where writers and journalists report the news

As things change, as we progress, and as time goes on, what we love and hold dear to our hearts will slowly but surely be phased out. Whether it is shown to be pointless, or something comes that is more readily available and appears at a faster time, either one goes. But it all comes to the same conclusion. What we have fond memories of will just be those. Memories. When it's all said and done, when something is shown to "improve" on something else, that something else will vanish. Before you know it, TV could be phased out entirely for solely internet connection. Books will no longer exist, and instead we will just have electronic reading. Hand-drawn artwork will be no more, as everything artistic will be computerized. As humans, we look for a quicker, more satisfying solution to things we use every day. If you could just type just by thinking it, I'm almost sure hundreds of thousands of people would go "Woah, that's amazing! I gotta get that!", and then, there goes typing. Writing is already being more and more phased out; proof of that is how schools never teach cursive anymore and more and more essays are being typed, not written. As I've been in college, I've noticed more and more people using laptops to write their notes instead of notebooks. What we deem to be necessary to the world of today will be seen as trivial in the world of tomorrow.

In the end, it all comes down to two things. The human's desire for comfort, and the opportunistic dollar. If something is seen as profitable and eases what we have already in place, then of course it will take over. It's just how things are.

I'm not happy about it either. In fact it pisses me off how we lost sight of so many things that used to be important to us and meant more to our lives than we thought. Now we have easier ways to do what we did, but at the same time now everything lacks a heart to it. Lacks a meaning, lacks feeling. But we can't fight it. It's just how the world works. Yes it's cruel. Yes it's painful. Yes it takes away what we deemed to be central to society. And of course, it takes away the memories we have of what we love. But it won't stop changing things.

A free press is an important tenet of a functioning democracy.
The print media has sold it's soul to the highest bidder. There is no longer any such thing as a "free press" or proper journalists who will hold politicians, corporations, governments to account.
Social media is doing the job a free press should be doing.
TV news stations are irrelevant when it comes to putting out relevant news in an unbiased way.

I mean, newspapers in print definitely aren't dead but the industry isn't what it once was, not even close. And that's honestly a bad thing and has led to the degredation of our national interest and intellect, where now we live in a nation of ill-informed fools about a quarter of whom believe the likes of Alex Jones and whackjobs. If we want to kill that, it's pretty simple-- read and buy print journalism.

The problem is newspapers are biased just as much as TV programs are.

That's why TV is called PROGRAMMING. They program your mind. People need to go outside and learn critical thinking.

But I do see the newspapers dying. The one in my old hometown is a shell of what it was.
