People born in the 1940s or '50s were virtually guaranteed to achieve the American dream of earning more than your parents did, Chetty says. But that's not the case anymore.

"You see that for kids turning 30 today, who were born in the mid-1980s, only 50 percent of them go on to earn more than their parents did," Chetty says. "It's a coin flip as to whether you are now going to achieve the American dream."

In this case it may be that the majority black neighborhood of Southside Park offers young black men the social networks, friends, extended family and churches that help them get ahead. Those kinds of networks might not be accessible to them in a majority white neighborhood.

Can someone please tell me WHY we support this and believe that people who can not afford anything should not get the same opportunity? because they are poor?

Now I don't believe in TALKING POINTS from a certain channel and talking heads. I believe people should have an opportunity to learn.

From an outsider point of view and being of a certain age - I definitely can't remember a time when it was as bad for the lower classes of whatever colour in the US - It is close to if not worse than the 80s really the limit of my experience. So I can agree with the basic premise of the article. I also agree with the idea of social mobility but am not close enough to give a proper insight, being a small relatively classless society we do have possible social mobility, a child through widespread subsidised education can get a professional qualification in theory.

Yeah it’s really hard now, I only had it once in the late 90s and now I’m trying to start over again but it’s not looking good. It’s almost impossible to do by myself because of the high taxes on Long Island and the prices of the houses now

In 1969 when I bought my first car it cost $1,800 off the showroom floor. During the Jimmy Carter years the same car was $25,000 because he added many gas saving regulations that increased the cost of manufacturing. During his Presidency we got a raise every 3 to 4 months of about 3 to 4% trying to keep up with inflation (during his term we had runaway inflation). I just looked in Google and it said it was only 8% a year but I remember getting the raises and, in the end, I had less spending money than when I stated. This was a bleak time in our nation’s history. Since then we measured the national debt from Billions to Trillions, this devalues the dollar and reduces our spending power. Add the Obama years where he regulated business out of business and more than doubled the national debt in his first 4 years further devaluating the dollar is it not understandable that your buying power has been devastated.
