Well if you look at history and think rationally, you should deduce the opposite conclusion. It took thousands years for Western civilization to get out of Aristotle's shadow. It was literally life threatening to go against the accepted theory in medieval time, the Inquisition made sure of that. In Galileo's days if you have a theory that doesn't align with the Church's doctrines you're burned at stakes, nowadays any crackpot can post their theory on social media claiming accepted theory, official account of events are false and get thousands likes as long as it suits the bias of the mass, at the same time the real experts are much less popular because they don't post clickbaits.

It makes me chuckle a bit when some lay person complains that it's difficult for scientists to go against the grain in the year 2020. The only way for you to see how this is not the case is, you need to at least have a vague idea of the current progress in some domain of science, then look at any research journal. This makes sense, yes? otherwise how do you distinguish:
- the guys who actually propose something alternative and original
from
-the guys who propose the earth is flat or that COVID 19 is on par with the flu?
A humble layman should consider the idea that the "disagreement" between scientists is simply beyond his comprehension. In modern days it's easy to go against the majority when you're a brilliant scientist and it's difficult to go against the majority when you're a crackpot. I will elaborate.

About the progress, from Aristotle to Galileo/Newton was about 1800 years, from Galileo/Newton to Einstein/Bohr was ~ 200 years. From Einstein/Bohr to Quantum Field Theory - the most successful scientific theory in history of mankind so far, was like 50 years. In modern days you can go against the majority without losing your life while still keeping your job in academia. It's very easy to find notable examples:

Without going too deep into philosophy of science I will just list two:

The good scientists do not throw out frameworks that have been empirically successful for centuries without making any new testable prediction, while the crackpots do exactly that: throwing out frameworks that have been empirically successful for centuries while making zero testable prediction, all they do is "offering alternative explanation for past data", that's a red flag, because you can fit billions of curves on a fixed number of existing data points.

2. Transparency about motivations and methods:

The good scientists provide open qualifiers for their models and interpretations of data, make their assumptions clear (sometimes before they’ve told you what they actually think), provide proper disclaimers (e. g Penrose made very clear that his idea about gravity and state reduction is speculative). They make their method, data, references completely unambiguous (or write books about it like the examples I gave). The crackpots usually don't make their assumptions clear, they might not even be fully aware of the assumptions they make. If you look into references of conspiracy theorists you often find yourself entering a rabbit hole, sometimes after going around the links you find yourself at some youtube channels.

1. Acquire basic competency in whatever field of science you're talking about. For example if you criticize epidemic model but can't solve textbook exercises in differential equations or statistical inference, you should learn those things first, they are often taught in high school, so this is the easy part.

2. Understand, and make a good-faith effort to confront the fundamental objections to your claims within established science. This is the hard part for the people who have an alternative theory, however if you just have grievance about mainstream science you can skip this.

3. Present your claims in a way that is complete, transparent, and unambiguous. This is easier than point 1, you just need honesty :)

The world would be a much better place if people just follow the guideline above before they start making noises on social media.

To summarize, the problem in the modern days is not the lack of nonconformists. It's actually populism. From outside looking in and without proper understanding, scientific research looks like echo chamber to some lay people. Social media and the internet make it easier for crackpots to spread their theories, which can be much more "agreeable" than the arcane knowledge of academics. Many crackpots are joined by carpetbaggers who know how to make use of public's negative reactions towards official sources of information and how to profit from the unknowns (e. g this new virus). It's a classic trick to promote their political career.
