Let me clarify, I know that such gestures are seen as a polite gesture in some parts of the world but things get different according to places. Its not a common gesture of politeness in my state and are usually done by people who are more into western style. So we've seen it mostly in movies.
Also another gesture is that a person may hold a door open for others following him, its also a gesture of politeness not commonly seen in my place. Actually I came to know about it when I read about it and I do that sometimes but not because the people behind me are women.

@emmily2396, guys due to various reasons find it very difficult to pee while sitting on a toilet seat and believe me peeing while standing is really convenient so that no one would bother to sit and pee.
