As a prior Service member, and a graduate of a law enforcement academy, I have enough experience to know that the attempt was NOT simply a series of 'mistakes' made by the CIA and the FBI. As another GAG member said "They don't make those kinds of mistakes" - and that is sure as hell true.

If I had been a member of the CIA or the FBI OR local law enforcement, and was on that scene, anyone short of being brain dead would know intuitively that the rooftop of a building within 150 meters was a PRIME shooting location and that it MUST be secured not only inside the building but but CERTAINLY from the roof top.

For anyone 'In charge" not seeing and knowing that, and to deny that is simply a liar'

I have fired a high powered rifle at 300 meter targets in the military (M-16) which is an AR-15 style weapon and hit those target and I was only a "marksman" and not and 'expert"

The 'killer' fired 8 rounds, killing the fireman and wounding terribly two others besides hitting Donald Trump, BEFORE THE CIA FIRE BACK...................Why the hell was that? Trump would have been dead with a bullet in his skull.

@goaded You seem unaware that in such a case nearly every law, particularly state laws are by such a definition "untested". This is why in common law states such as Virginia and 48 sister states, the meaning of the law is determined by 3 things in descending order.
1 The written text (as understood when it was written.)

3: Consistent adjudication of the law.(cases of law must be treated the same).

A grand jury decided there was a crime, a trial jury was convinced that he did it, then SCOTUS decided that action (organising a meeting) by an elected official wasn't an official action, which is how it works. Unless there was precedent that it was OK for elected officials to take money for that kind of action before he was charged, nobody did anything wrong.

And, considering Thomas has only stayed on SCOTUS for the last 20 years because he's essentially been paid to (knowing that he'll keep ruling in his benefactors' favour), there ought to be laws against that sort of thing. People shouldn't be going into public service to get rich.

This is literally how many if not most public figures including politicians make their money, and its not a official act. We call theses endorsement deals.

Bribery, as taking gifts is regarded as the same is very clearly defined as abusing your official powers for sell. This is actually fairly common to in modern politics as well, we call that "lobbying" and its generally legal for campaign donations.
Regardless the abuse of the same is what you would generally have to prove in court.

In the Governor's case simply enforcing a product or even organizing meetings has nothing to do with the Governor's legitimate powers, and therefore is as the Court said a non-official act.

in this case just a celebratory endorsement, which is perfectly legal and normal.

The Virginia state law didn't mention "official acts", so the conviction would have stood. I don't know why Smith agreed to use the federal law definition.

I've been on GAG long enough to know a large number of American gun owners believe they need one to keep the government in check. The problem is with that attitude and those numbers it's only a matter of time before someone decides they need to take out a threat.

You can't defend against being shot. You can have the best gun and years of practice but you can be killed at anytime by anyone within shooting range, you won't see them let alone get to fire back.
