I think at this point the only very real disadvantage comes from physical preference. While most white children aren't being brought up racist anymore there's still a general preference for white looks, which isn't entirely their fault since the media controls most of that and they just happen to be on the side that is admired. I do think white people make a lot of assumptions about a person based on their race ( i think they'd be more afraid of a strange dark skinned person walking up to them even in the middle of the day than a strange white person.) I don't see hatred and discrimination though just bad, hurtful stereotypes.
Whether he experienced it or not, if one were to look at incarceration, education and poverty rates by race it's still clear that the wounds haven't healed; also there are many black people still alive who had to live under Jim Crow laws.
So because black people make up a higher percentage of inmates and the such... that's racist? As you said wounds haven't healed, so I'm not quite sure what you meant. @adquidorator
Slavery was not the only form of oppression and exploitation of African-Americans, and unless more resources are put into giving African Americans Equal opportunities, we will still see this disparity.
To an extent that's true BUT there was still legal discrimination against blacks within the lifetime of many alive today and these policies put black people on a lower playing field and there was never any attempt to right the wrongs of the past.
I'm not disputing that at all. I'm saying times have changed since then... opportunities are given so long as you take it. nobody has an advantage so to speak. Unless the peep in charge is racist... and that can go both ways. example, I was denied a job in illford, which has a heavy black and Islamic community, because I was white. admittedly it's rarer to my knowledge, but goes to show that it's a personal problem... the paving has been set for all to walk on
Well tell me, do you think Black People who lived under Jim Crow should be given reparations and should black Schools get equal funding on a per student basis?
No one should feel guilt about something that they didn't do, but inequality resulting from past policies should be addressed, and yes there are schools in the US that have a predominately black population and they are underfunded.
So by that logic, every family affected by the Holocaust should have a reparation. Every lineage that were slaves to the Egyptians should be paid a reparation and so on and so forth
If every race and creed were to pay a reparation to another... we would all be fucked at one point or another.
Sometimes holding onto the past stops peeps being able to embrace the future.
Yeah as I stated, they shouldn't exist, it should just be a school... not mainly any race by anything other than coincidence
I agree with you. Most people won't because they're willfully blind.
The truth is that people feel more comfortable with the races they are exposed to in early life, and the ones they see favorably around them (IE: the media).
However, there's also something to be said for inborn preferences. The simple fact is: light skin is better than dark skin.
It's been shown over and over again that extremely young children, even with no exposure to hollywood movies, almost unanimously prefer light skinned dolls to dark skinned dolls.
In every racial group across the globe, the women are lighter than the men, and the men prefer lighter featured women.
The current theory for the evolution of blue eyes in Europe is that because the harsh cold made it so that many men died hunting, and the female job of gathering was useless in the cold climate, men had their pick of the women, and they unanimously chose the few light eyed women there were.
The inborn preference of light skin over dark skin is flawed. there's nothing that indicates such an inborn preference. Why? Because there are tribes within Africa that look down on light skin. For example the Maasai people are known for associating light skin with witchcraft and they tend to disband any light skin/albino person within their tribe.
Lighter skin is preferred in most parts of the world, because it has been reinforced for the past millenium to be associated with wealth, upper class and beauty while dark skin has ALWAYS been negatively stereotyped as lower class, ugly. Its not a human nature thing, its a society thing. If lighter skin was truly an inborn preference in humans, then surely natural selection would have taken it course and eradicated dark skin by now.
What about the blue/green/grey eyes in Afghanistan or Pakistan? Thats middle east... From what I know these eye colours originated around the Black Sea.
There's no real evidence that light eyes actually originated in the black sea, just that they were very abundantly present in the distant past. It could easily be that a group with a sporadic occurrence of light eyes made it to the Caucasus/Ukraine, and underwent heavy selection for light eyes there.
The middle east and northern India have very cold climates in certain places. You find the highest incidence of light eyes among people living in the mountainous regions of these places, such as in the Kalash of Afghanistan (who despite appearances, are a different race from white Europeans)
Give me a fucking break. You have the same rights as everyone else. Honestly, you make black people look bad when you write things like this. No one is oppressing black people but themselves. I go to a university and have a couple of very good friends who are black and they are wonderful people. The bottom line though, is most black people don't want to go to college. They'd rather sell drugs and commit crimes than work. The kinds of people I just described will continue to be oppressed and live in their fantasy world that all white people hate them until they can grow up and stop behaving like little children.
I kinda agree with this. From my experience , say in highschool, the Canadian black people just wanted to play basketball and fuck around and always try to act like they in a rap video. I'm surprised half of them got into highschool... However the black people who are first generation work hard, and understand the importance of education.
mm.. I'm not sure if I really agree with this. I'm friends with plenty of black people and I'm in no way trying to be racist. Yes, some black people are still treated poorly, but I almost never see it happen anymore. Now I'm sure it could be different where you live but in my town that's not really a problem. I mean seriously if black people were treated poorly why would we have Obama as president?
Just because there is a black president does not mean that there isn't racism in the country, especially when black men get longer sentences than white men as has been shown in many studies. As well as black men getting routinely "stopped" by cops based off of racial profiling/stereotypes. Not all black people are treated unfairly, but there is a prejudice
Obama being president shows how far we have come for sure. But even THAT isn't an achievement (I was in college watching him getting inaugurated and an old white man shook his head at the television and said aloud "What is this world coming to?")
Black people have been hated on in America since the first slave ship was brought to shores. Black people in general really only received civil rights about 50 years ago. That means anytime before the 1960s a white man could rape, kill a black person and get away with it and it happened A LOT. Never forget history because the same people you are trying to gain acceptance from were raised in environments that bred that type of behavior. blacks were, and still are seen as lesser. Don't be surprised by any type of racism you notice from people.
Yes I agree that being black in this country does suck at times, but all ethnicity's receive racism so it's not just blacks. Also I don't agree they should have to apologize, if you mean the nation itself apologizes for what it's done in the past (Germany apologized for the holocaust) I agree with that but not white people as a whole. The fact is, being a minority in America especially sucks and always will.

Also some of your points are kind of stupid and I suspect they were typed out of anger (We all type incredibly stupid stuff when we're mad) but some kind of make sense.
Either way you're right and anyone who is saying otherwise just doesn't want to accept that minorities in general have it worse in America (I don't think most people realize that you're using black people as a way to represent a minority and show that minorities in general have it horrible).
Fun fact: the majority of hate crimes today are perpetrated by blacks.
Anyway, no one alive today has ever witnessed slavery in the Americas, it was abolished 150 years ago. And the majority of protesters today never lived in the times were blacks had no rights. Sorry but bum rushing a cop after trying to kill him and being shot to death isn't oppression, it's being a moron.
If you hate the US then move to Liberia - it was created for freed slaves who wanted to return to Africa.
There is more black on white crime than white on black crime now, its just isn't listed as a hate crime as often because everyone knows, only white people are racist.
Let's face it, being white in America sucks. You tend to get blamed for things people did a century ago. Real talk, life sucks regardless. Tough titties.
i love being black, we were never given a choice to choose whether to be black, white Asian or what ever race. i would let my face down for no one, i am against racism. i believe racist people don't believe in God, Because go put whoever he wants and want ever he wants in this would and nobody should try to change it to nobody should hate it. i believe everybody should unit, because unity is the key to making this world a happy and safe place. God made this world so everyone could live in it. humans should not decide who gets to live in it. we are family, why are we against each other

I haven't seen A problem except black people demand for more and play the black card all the time. Plus it's not my fault some people aren't attracted to black people. What are we sposed to do about that?
I went anon. So my black friends don't freak out and go we'll she is racist.
Shiiitt speak for yourself, I love being black I don't know if I can take you completely seriously since you're anonymous but a lot of what you say is true. Fuck what people think of us.
As a fellow black American, I find the institutional racism rather amusing.
Let me explain why.
No other ethnic group is systematically disadvantaged from the very top, like it is against black Americans.
If we as black Americans weren't seen as a powerful, strong, determined, passionate people aka "a threat" by the people at the very top (aka rich white people)... ... ... ... we wouldn't be so disadvantaged at every step of American socio-economics.
People like me and @mr90skid understand the deep-rooted fear of black power by the people at the top 1% of the socio-economic scale, and that is where our pride and confidence comes from. :-D
P. S. There is a reason why the fear of "black power" is almost never discussed in the press; the people who control the media (the top 1%) doesn't want to intentionally empower black Americans. They would rather keep black people subjugated, to the point of institutionalizing many and numerous socio-economic hurdles. Talk about being SCARED! #shookones
I'm glad I'm part german. It's not even about looks, it's about beong treated like a decent human being. My brothers look black and even he notices (but doesn't realize why) people who don't know him treat him better and pays more attention to him when I'm with him. I completely agree with your article.
I think black people are more frequently represented in the media that any other minority, in America, but ootherwise, totally agree. Can't tell you how many times I started hated myself for being black.
A lot of people voted because he was black because it needed to happen considering everything. If he was a republican he would have lost. But idc if he's Asian or white or an alien I would vote democrat either way. We needed a black president and now we need a female one. That pattern needed to be broken. the fact people like you insist on a black pres or female is valid reason whites should not let it happen... if politics is based on groups, we should push for our own interests, no?
Lolol nah there have been some really good white male presidents. But people should see that not only they can be great presidents. Any kind of person can. It's about breaking society's norm. Because of people like me, there is a black president and will be a female president and they are good people
Africans were enslaved by Africans in Africa and sold to slave traders. But being black sucks worse in other countries more than here in the US. Such as India, China, Japan. Also certain parts of Africa.
I mean in a polite way in our world being black in general sucks. Have black people hating on other black people for being dark while dark black people call light skinned blacks fake. My black co-workers wouldn't acknowledge my black friend because he was African not American black. "He ain't black his African" me "you must know something I don't know his black". I hear black people hating on each other all the time. How do you expect to be equals when you hate each other. Black culture on its own is skewed. When looking and acting ignorant is glorified while intelligent and with aspersions as an "Uncle Tom" Over 50% of black Americans are growing up without father figures I'm glad they deman change but I think not until change comes internally from their culture and community will others take them siriously. My two cents I'm not black but I have an opinion take it or leave it.
You claiming black people are least likely to be on TV and in power. So giving the position of arguably the most powerful chair in the world, to a black dude... validates that claim yeah?
He's shit, doesn't matter what colour his skin is.
And I don't why these people are associating "black" with being "ugly". Because I've never once thought that in my life. I've never had that association. In fact, I find many black people way more attractive than some of my fellow white peeps... so that's a bit of a ridiculous statement.
Sometimes I feel like black people are more worried about their skin color than everyone else is.
I'm not going to lie and say I haven't felt intimidated walking down the street and having a group of black guys pass me by. Especially if they're tall, loud/boisterous, seem rude, or are big... But I feel the same about a gang of loud, big white men.
One place I would say you might get some "racism" is in retail. Simply because if you're a black guy, and you're looking around suspiciously for any reason. I (or my coworkers) would start watching you like a hawk. Especially if you come in rowdy with a bunch of your friends.
But I would do the same to everyone else who came in my store looking suspicious. It just seems to happen more with groups of black men.
If that makes me racist, so be it. But as long as they don't actually steal anything, I don't treat anyone differently than the next person.

You know a huge portio of slaves were sold to white people by tribal chiefs right?
it's people like you that keep racism alive.

@adquidorator
No, but you didn't answer my question.
Yeah I did
I stated said schools shouldn't exist.
It shouldn't be "black schools" it should just be "schools"
@adquidorator

Ohhh ok. That's still an awful thing to do

dude. obama became the *president* running on a campaign of 'vote for me i'm black.
black misery is self inflicted in the usa.
More like don't vote for the Republican...
A lot of people voted because he was black because it needed to happen considering everything. If he was a republican he would have lost.
But idc if he's Asian or white or an alien
I would vote democrat either way.
We needed a black president and now we need a female one. That pattern needed to be broken. Anyone of any race or gender or speciality should be able to be president. All generations need to see it so they know that there is no limitations.
@Bards
the leader of the free world needs better qualifications thay 'im black' or 'i have a vag'
I'm aware of that. But the pattern needed to break. We wouldn't really know if they would be great presidents if we didn't put them in office first

why? because a white man can't be a fair leader?

That's why Obama is president. because no one in america likes a black man.
First black president to be elected and even after election a majority of people still think he is one of the worst presidents in history.
So because people think he is the worst... they are racist too? take owner
Nothing to do with the fact he made promises he couldn't actually do.
I never said they're racist I just said people think he's a bad presidents, and what does having one black president have to do with anything?
Obama is not a true black man lol, and he is one of the worst presidents this country has ever seen.
one of the worst? that's why he got re-elected. and almost all politicians world wide make promises they can't keep. no surprise there...

@Phoenix98 what is a "true" black man?
@thewanderingme Sirius Black is a true Black man.
Well that's easy one who isn't half white.
alright then... how about Jon Snow? he took the black so also a true black man.
one of Mexico's first presidents was as black as obama they you think they like the little black population that they have
Umm... As for the "not being in movies" thing... that's bullshit.
I would say Asians are the least represented in American television and film. Specifically... probably Indians.
And I don't why these people are associating "black" with being "ugly". Because I've never once thought that in my life. I've never had that association. In fact, I find many black people way more attractive than some of my fellow white peeps... so that's a bit of a ridiculous statement.
It's all in the eye of the beholder.
Same in my opinion : I've met many beautiful black people and many ugly white and Asian people.
Sometimes I feel like black people are more worried about their skin color than everyone else is.
