Why are bank tellers so nosy?

I was depositing money and this dude was asking me a million questions.

I asked him 'Why do you want to pay for my dinner?' and he said 'No, just making small talk.'

Then, he gave me my receipt and balance and looked at my balance.

WTF? Just do your job. I'm not here to be your friend. You're an employee.

They see a thousand numbers a day, unless you have an extremely large amount of money they won't remember. But I know what you mean sometimes I wish they were more like ATMs.

The thing is that I go to the bank all the time and they know me, but this new guy with dreads ended up serving me and wouldn't shut up.

Next time I want to say 'What is the relevance of your question to this task?'
