Why are North American banks suddenly so strict with ID and security checks?

I went there this week to change the PIN number on 3 of my cards, and then when I gave them my I. D., they said they could not accept just any I. D., they could only accept the I. D. they had in file for me in their system, and then because it was my birthday months ago and I got a replacement I. D. to match my changed age, they had to delete the old I. D. that they had on file for me, and put it my new I. D. before I could use it to verify who I was.

And then the teller had to talk to the manager twice and ask the manager to watch him help me change the PIN number for my banking cards before I could do it, and it took around 8 times longer then normal for the banking line to move. And all the old tellers were gone which leads me to believe they did a massive lay off at the bank after fraudulent activity happened with one of their unidentified bank tellers.
