Just watched this video, and I have to say it is one of the best speeches I've ever seen. This guy isn't only smart, but pretty fucking brave in my opinion by putting this out there. What do you think?

What do I think? I lived in Iran. I wore Hijab for 6 years. There is a special branch of police "Amr e be M'aruf va Nayh az Munkar" in Iran. They can arrest even under age girls who don't have proper Hijab and boys and girls who walk around like lovers. Yes, they can and do arrest couples that are in relationships out of marriage, according to the law and Sharia. Me and my friend got arrested once for having bad Hijaab. Harassed numerous times, not by people, by the police. They couldn't keep me, but her parents had to come in order to free her. Why? Because her hair wasn't hidden enough. Because our "ears" were out and showing. The female police who grabbed me by my arm and pushed me into the car would be in a big trouble if she actually hurt me. she repeatedly threatened to beat me up.

I was trapped in a subway station for more than one and half hour during the 2009 crisis, when I was only 14 years old, when the special forces and the police cornered a huge group of protesters in there. I got scared to death that day. I sincerely thought that I would die and if it wasn't for the boy who was with me I would get panicked and probably get hurt.

At least half of the police special forces are not even Iranian. They are from Lebanon and Syria, provided by Hezbollah and Assad. The socialist government of Iran takes the money of the Iranian taxpayer, give it to the Arabs to provide them with soldiers to go and brutalize Iranians. And western socialist muppets who live in pony land say the power to tax isn't the power to destroy.

None of these young liberal pacifists in west were in situations that I was in middle east.

In 2009 crisis alone many innocent young people were brutalized and murdered in cold blood. Many others are still in prison. And this is the same rouge government that subsidizes Hezbollah and Palestinians to attack Israel.

Are these all related to "Islam"? Yes. Of course they are.

One of the main intellectual and ideological figures behind the creation of Islamic republic of Iran was "Ali Shariati". I've read almost all of his important books about Islam and its social and political ideology.

He was a Marxist intellectual and the son of an "Akhud", an actual Mullah, and he clearly states that Islam is a political religion and has deeply ingrained Marxist connotation. Which he considers to be "good", but we can see what kind of "good" systems leftist ideologues and intellectual wannabes create every time.

The entire point of creating the Islamic republic of Iran as a socialist state, was going back to the very roots and origins of Islam. This is said by all the members and ideologues behind it, and they weren't only Iranians. And it was created by, and it is being controlled by actual Mullahs. Khamenei the supreme leader of Iran is an Ayatollah. Ayatollah is one of the highest ranks in Islamic studies.

Who knows Islam better than Ayatollahs? Some average westernized Muslim who comes on these forums and talks about Islam being the religion of peace? No, old Ayatollahs know what Islam really is, they studied it for years, and they show it through the systems they create and control.

I think religion is a condition of the environment and personal nature. Some people believe blindly, some don't believe at all, some believe after a hardship, some put religion away after a hardship.
He can obviously feel whatever he wants. I have only studied the Koran on a surface level, mostly focusing on early entries and the life of Mohammad. But I was raised Christian, baptist to be exact. And I can say I feel the SAME way about Christianity as he feels about Islam. It's some batshit craziness. I think some people will take away "Muslim denounces Islam as BAD!" and ignore "I'm an atheists" But me, I see what he's saying, he examined the holy book and it didn't agree with his sensibilities and he wasn't going to bend his sensibilities/morality to get things he considered evil to be ok.
I like a man with his type of mind, he's a critical thinker with a strong sense of what is right and wrong to him.

Your forgetting the other option. You don't have to accept the bad with the good, you accept the good (Islam actually has many many passages about excepting other religions just as the new testament is rife with passages about compassion and non judgment) and realize the bad is part of the politics of the time. Also an acknowledgement of the brutality of the times which did not allow for a lot of leeway in behavior and its actually quite comendable that it talks about charity as much as it does. Its kind of like demonizing and denouncing science because of eugenics and social darwinism. It is peripheral manipulation of science that is a misrepresentation designed specificly for the personal gain of another. We don't hold science accountable for that why do we do it for religion? Obviously if its not your thing its not your thing but the denouncing of religion whole heartedly (even ridiculing those who don't (not you specificly, in general) seems a bit unfair.

@hellionthesage I see the 'science based' examples as different than the religious texts. In regards to the book as a whole, it was written by men for men. Everything about it is tainted by the people who wrote it. The science was clear, it has no emotion, no hidden agenda, no culture influencing it. The the truth will come out. One could argue, the message was clear before men intervened, but that would also require entertaining the idea of the supernatural.

I do not entertain the notion of the supernatural. It is a philosophy no different then any other. The fact is if you can take an ideology and manipulate it then it should be acknowledged that this is a manipulation of the ideology not the ideology itself. Hence the example with science. We cannot blame science for what men do with it any more then you can blame democracy for the vietnam war, or all the damage done in the middle east (which was collateral damage in Americas cold war with the soviet union in order to prevent the spread of communism in favor of the spread of democracy), nor the murdering of 49 million people by stalin in the name of communism. These are the actions of individuals, no different then the various religious text out their. If we disregard all of religion becaues of the actions of politicians who used it for their own gain we would, to avoid hypocrisy, have to discard every single ideology and system we have. @hellionthesage Hmmm, I think the core reason why religion will always be different is that at its core there are set truths that often no one can say are wrong without being 'wrong' to a fundamentalist (who typically agrees with most of the stuff in a book/text) Science just is, the end product is the truth. Information is thrown out to get closer to the truth, no matter how long it stood, slowly the truth is exposed. Religion tells us the truth, and that's it. People warp both, they do. But in the ground work of say Islam and Christianity, there is some messed up shit. If I took a periodic table, made of on metal, and dashed it through someone's skull, yes, I would be using science badly, if I do something bad that say was ok in some religious texts, then hey, at least (inset deity) thinks I'm in the right.

But that requires two things, one that you take a religious text as absolute which is not a good approach and is honestly not the approach most scholars take, in fact thats why their are religious scholars because they believe its metaphor, its philosophy meant to be analyzed and thought about. The second is the refusal to acknowledge the political manipulation of religion. Power hungry people used religion for their own gain, thats why we actually have protestants, nobles realized they could break away from the church (who was also using their religious influence for political gain) they could use religion to control the populace but also not have to be controled themselves. Basicly the religious texts are what happens if you where to take all the books of law and put them into philosophy books. Just because they are within the same book, does not mean they are the same thing. The other issue is the refusal to acknowledge the time period. We judge based upon our situation not theirs.

I think people will believe what they believe. He himself pointed out that their was good as well as bad within it. yet he fixated on the bad, ironic as he pointed out the bad was because of politics not the religion, that is the religion is comprised of both the religious spiritual ideas and the political machinations of the rulers who used the religion as a tool for enforcing their control, not unlike how groups try and use either religion or moral "superiority" or "proggressiveness" as ways of discrediting other ways of thinking while encouraging a tribalistic mentality in the followers and using that fervor and peer pressure to recruit others into their way of thinking. Its really easy to cast judgment when your not starving, dying of disease, accidents and hostile invaders (to shed some light, its estimated that the death toll by violence was about 90%(in an era where starvation and disease where common with no way of defending against them) when we where hunter gather tribes with a steady decrease in violence as time has gone by.) who where not going to leave you alone just because you where a pacifist, in fact they would kill you before you even had the chance to tell them you where so. So the conditions where entirely different and should be accounted for yet never really are. So him stating this isn't eye opening nor is it a reflection on religion, its a statement about humanity which every person should already be aware of but sadly are not. The only lesson to take away is that you should not follow any ideology blindly and to take the good and discard the bad. Overall nothing new and he is not brave nor is it enlightening nor is he particularly smart (from what he is saying, that is he is not saying anything that would suggest an above average intellect within the confines of this video). To be perfectly honest, this is nothing because it refuses to talk about the other half, the fact that for most of history it was the muslims who where the most progressive and accepting of any other people. In fact it neglects to mention that up until the west destroyed the middle east with its political back stabbing during the cold war, the middle east and muslims where as progressive as the rest of the world.

It's a difficult subject.

One the one hand, I think it's great that he's rejected what he deems to be an angry, vengeful, and all too human-like God. This is something I can relate to.

On the other hand, if you look at holy books through an allegorical lense, I think we can all see how some terrible texts might just be parables disguised as the word of God. Take, for example, the 10th plague set against the Egyptians. I mean, holy hell, that doesn't exacty paint a pretty picture of God if taken literally. The New Testament is rife with parable -- see the Parable of the Sower, for example.

Anyway, I just hope that this dude has found his peace.

"the values of human rights" Doesn't really mean anything. What those values are changes from society to society. In their society their beliefs do reflect the values of human rights. Islam was created during a time when great personal sacrifice was needed for the society to survive. Now because those ideals are not as needed for our survival we are judging them as being unfair, or too strict. If tomorrow we were all became as desperate as the people were thousands of years ago when these religions were created, we would be supporting many of the same values we now look down on.

What I'm doing in showing you the "regular" or "moderate" muslims sit very comfortably next to radical muslims, they share their culture, values and beliefs, and they accept them and won't do anything to stop that.
