I'd say natural selection knows it job well. Severely overweight people live shorter lives and are less likely to procreate. Therefore after enough time has passed the only people left would be only the smart ones who take good care of themselves. And since no country has only fat people the survival is not really in danger.

The end would imply that every western person is fat and out of shape, and that just isn't the case. There are many people who care about their health, but not many people actually care about those people very much because they care about themselves. Go take a look through art history. You'll find that a few hundred years ago, being overweight was considered sexy and beautiful. Society did not collapse, and western civilization went on to even greater heights.
