No. Sending children away to lose weight is a harsh way to go about it. Instead, parents should take classes to learn what healthy eating looks like and why it is important. They can then stop giving their children garbage and give them the foods they're supposed to eat. If the parents ARE educated, and still refuse to make a much needed lifestyle change for the sake of their family, the children can be put in a special school to learn about healthy eating.
You shouldn't scold them for being fat, ever, because that doesn't solve anything. It can lead to binge eating disorders or anorexia (it really just depends on how that child handles stress). Neither one of those outcomes are healthy, so do NOT fat shame a child.
There are so many other options than taking a child away from their parents. Overfeeding children isn't abuse or neglect, so there's really no reason to take them away.
I don't know why I bring up fat shaming, since you didn't mention it. I'm tired, so...
There's a difference in being fat and obese. Im not taking about fat shaming where the child's weight creeps up a little bit due to not enough exercise I mean when a child is obese.
Yeah, I know that.
No, not because it's not a good idea to make these kids lose weight but because it simply doesn't work if you do it forcibly. They need to WANT to get better and make this change in their lives or else they'll go back home and fall right back into their old habits.
thats why you educate those kids. My mother used to over feed me and keep me locked indoors from a young age in which I ended up as a grossly obese ten year old who couldn't walk without losing my breath, thankfully my dad got full custody and sent me to fat camp and kept me on a diet of healthy food and exercise. It took me up until I was fifteen to be I at a healthy weight.
what my mother did to me was child abuse at least I had one good parent
Yeah but you got better because you actually wanted to lose weight yourself, the way how obesity and overweight are normalised in American media, most kids will probably think it's perfectly fine to be that size and not even see a single reason to lose weight so you'd have to make them change their minds on the entire matter before even getting started first of all.
These simple concepts always work well in theory but not in practice..
I was too young to understand, I thought fat camp was a punishment but it was tough love, im so grateful to my Dad especially when I see my poor half brother waddling to school, unfortunately his Dad was not a great dad like mine.
Your right about the fat acceptance nonsense.
I think you will find that the more complicated a solution the less likely it is to work.
Well that last argument is certainly disproven by political systems, but thats a whole different subject I don't wanna go into that much now, I still don't believe in the psychological benefit of forcing your ideal upon someone who doesn't believe them themselves, which is essentially what a boot camp for fat kids does - unless there's a really good therapist working with them until they are really ready and motivated to lose weight and become healthy
I just believe is not psychologically damaging for kids to be obese
you dont think growing up obese would be psychologically damaging and im not even talking about the bullying or being to big for a cinema seat.
No, children shouldn't be isolated for being fat. Their parents should encourage them to exercise and not overeat. My brother was a fat kid and my mom used to tell my brother that if he did 100 jump ropes, she'd give him a reward. Now, he's a gym rat.
There wo be other kids at Fat camp, thats why its a camp. Your mother did right helping your brother lose weight though it was her fault if he was obese.
He was too young to know any better and your parents let him get that way from a young age but still I don't think your brother was obese maybe just overweight is that right?
yes you can its called parenting. No after all means no and no child should be allowed to become obese thats not growing that's over feeding.
well that's good.
Who's supposed to pay for these kids to go to fat camp. I can tell you that it's not going to be the parents that end up paying for it, any camp where you have to house, feed and manage a group of people is expensive and most parents won't be able to afford it. It's going to be the tax payers. I'm a working American that pays taxes and I say it's not my problem.
Your right the taxpayer slways ends up with the burden of lazy patents but you will pay for it a hundred times over through welfare and health care payments for obese adults who can work and have serious weight related health problems ie getting their foot cut off due to diabetes. The Conservative in me says "a stich in time saves nine"
The food bill won't be too expensive
Yes. I don't want my taxes to go for their life-long treatment. Better it be quick and harsh instead.
@cavmanier that could work.
@cavmanier he must not have any kids
Well said. The Taxpayer always ends up footing the bill in the long run so it makes financial sense.
We can design it like this one
www.c64-wiki.com/.../Pitfall_Animation2.gif
@cavmanier yeah but they are perfectly fine with shovling fast food down their kids throats everyday while the kids play xbox.
We can conclude that xbox is the problem.
just a symptom of bad parenting.
@cavmanier I have, and i own it still :)
@cavmanier I do
@cavmanier omg we still have to Ataris. Loved defender. We actually still have pong in the attic. An amstrad too.
@cavmanier I dont anyone liked pong lol
@cavmanier they are in my parents attic, I got rid of my xbox because it was a time burglar, I literally wasted years on COD.

Well first of all, almost none of those kids are obese. Overweight? yes. Obese? fuck no.
Second. CPS can't handle their real cases, why dump more on them? This isn't nearly as pressing of an issue as say, emotional or physical abuse, which CPS is shit at dealing with
they are obese, your thinking of morbidly obese. So your suggestion is just let the abuse continue?
no, they're not obese. Definitely overweight but not obese.
It's also not abuse, so yes, let it continue.
Is obese. Im sorry I dont agree that child abuse should be allowed to continue.
The people in the before and after photos and the four in the first photo are definitely not obese. I know what obese looks like, it ain't that.
It's not abuse. You know what's abuse? Neglecting your child and verbally and emotionally abusing them to the point of self harm and suicide, which happened to my best friend. It's beating your kid every day, until they have welts and permanent scars on their back, happened to another friend of mine. It's belittling and degrading your child and isolating them from their siblings and friends, and controlling everything about them, which happened to a third friend of mine. Did CPS do shit in any of these cases? No. Were they called? Yes, twice in one case, which simply resulted in the abuse getting worse. Weigh issues are not abuse.
Well when your child is so fat it ends up with diabetes and all the mental issues that comes from being isolated from society that is abuse. My next door neighbour his parents overfed him every day of his life now he has paid the price for their abusive bad parenting when they amputated his leg. he's only twenty.
"and all the mental issues that comes from being isolated from society" bucko, that is very different from obesity. That's isolation, plain and simple, and has nothing to do with being fat
isolation caused by obesity.
Still not following.
No. Some kids have the personality type to be lazy and eat the same amount as other kids but get fat. Others just have a different metabolism rate. You can get two different people with different genes and they both eat and exercise the exact same amount, one will gain weight more easily than the other.
Unless parents are doing drugs, beating, or sexually abusing their kids, they shouldn't be taken away from them.
Children who dont exercise their kids and overfeed their kids unhealthy foods to the point of obesity and giving them life long weight related health problems are committing child abuse.
"Some kids have the personality type to be lazy and eat the same amount as other kids but get fat. Others just have a different metabolism rate. You can get two different people with different genes and they both eat and exercise the exact same amount, one will gain weight more easily than the other. " this is a statement right out of the fat acceptance play book but the fact is that if you feed your kid large portions of unhealthy food and dont insure they get enough exercise they will become over weight or obese. You are the kids parent so its your responsibility to control a child's food portions and encourage them to get enough exercise. What you said is a complete cop out.
You girls go to fat camp and you will become beautiful
cf.girlsaskguys.com/.../...e-a913-7050bff64c26.jpg
Maybe at least more physically attractive.
No because the problem needs to be fixed at home first. Cause if you take away the kid and they get all healthy and lose the weight then you send them straight back home... whats going happen? Their most likely going to fall back into their old eating habits because the parents are feeding them the wrong types of food. Kids are going to eat what the parents are eating.. so if you have to get the parents on board first and educate them about a more healthier lifestyle. That way they will encourage the kids to eat better, be active, and make more healthy dinners. Now if the kid is old enough to make their own decisions and know what they should and should not eat.. then its totally fine.
That approach has been tried by social services in all aspects of child abuse including obesity and it doesn't work as bad parents are bad parents maybe not let the kids back.
I couldn't get behind either of your narrow poll choices. While kids (AND their parents) should know the importance of a healthy lifestyle, a free society would be diminished by placing kids in concentration camps
isn't that exactly what care homes are. Taking a child from an abusive parent that beats and sexually abuses a child is right so why is taking a child and putting it into a weight loss camp for the sake of its health wrong?
If there are signs of abuse then yes of course the children should be protected.
and taken from their parents and treated for the abuse?
I guess if it was so bad that warranted attention, I'd put the parents in a sort of probation to start making healthier eating choices for kids. One thing that REALLY bothers me is being in line at a grocery store behind a woman with her kids buying cookies and candy and cake and processed meal choices as no vegetables or healthy food options and then using her food stamps to pay for it all. That should be a first step that government could control.
agreed on the food stamps but if there was to be probation then they would need to seriously tough on the parents as the child is still growing and an obese child by the time its fully grown would probably never be able to lose the weight as its body frame would have grown larger to accommodate the weight. In my mind there's a short window in the obese childs life as it grows up after which its near impossible.
Makes sense.
it does doesn't it.
They shouldn't be taken away. That's ridiculous. But there should be more social programs in place to help impoverished kids who, like you said, have no say in the matter. I'd gladly pay more taxes for that.
the social programs dont work
That sounds reasonable to me but the parents need to be re educated about nutrition as well
plenty of free time while their kids ate at camp
Absolutely yes. If your kids are obese then social services or the police should remove them from your abusive care.
Social services can't even handle their real cases. Why put this crap on them?
They should be handling the real cases thats what they are paid for. Are you paid to do a job you can't or won't do?
That's my point exactly. They CAN'T even handle rea cases, ex: child abuse, meth babies, babies beat to death. They can't even handle that stuff and you now want them to storm homes and take fat kids to camps? No.
so your answer is to do nothing about child abuse no matter what form it takes?
About a fat kid? Hardly child abuse. My answer is for the parents to be informed about what needs to be done and BE A PARENT. It's up to them as the kids a small and up to the teen as he/she ages. At some point you're responsible for your own decisions, food choices included. Raise children to be responsible.
"BE A PARENT. It's up to them as the kids a small and up to the teen as he/she ages. At some point you're responsible for your own decisions, food choices included. Raise children to be responsible." thats exactly the problem they aren't being parents and by the time those kids are old enough to be responsible for their own food choices they are already obese and being fed what their parents give them as well as to obese to move let alone breath. there's a bog difference between a fat kid and an obese kid, a fat kid might just be able to lose its weight an obese kid will always struggle with its weight.
You do have a point there. I admit, but I still just don't see this helping at all. If they aren't being a parent then maybe the parent needs the resources and not the child. Instead of snatching the child away to somewhere they don't know, with people they don't know, and making them feel guilty, why not offer the parent resources? Lets think about it: if the parent isn't being a parent then maybe they don't know how to say no? Maybe they spoil their kid? Maybe their answer to a screaming child was "be good and I'll buy you candy". They probably have no parenting skills or healthy relationship with their child. Get them help to teach them healthy activities, get them involved in groups of parent/child teams to do healthy stuff together. Hikes, sports, kayaking. Teach them to be a parent and say no. Teach them how to shop. Many people believe buying healthy is more expensive. It isn't. Buying healthy is only more expensive when you still buy the junk too. Teach them to buy and..
... and cook healthy. That can even be a good bonding experience with their child. This way you're killing 2 birds with one stone. Parents not parenting/ childhood obesity, and growing healthy relationships.
The softly softly approach has been tried before and doesn't work as usually the parents are fat/obese themselves and lazy so its hard to change their habits. Think of the long term affects of millions kids growing up to adulthood as obese on a nation. They likely can't work, have serious health problems, its costs them twice the price to travel, they are a massive drain on welfare and a huge burden on Obama care
Obama care is its own burden. And I'm curious where you live that you see so many morbidly obese children in the streets? Because I live in the fattest nation in the world, America, and in the south where we are raised on fried foods, cornbread, and the best desserts you've ever put in your mouth and never in my 29 years have I seen even one morbidly obese child that I cam recall anywhere besides on The Maury Show on TV.
lol you can't throw a stone in America without hitting an obese or overweight child
Lets talk about obese. The medical field names many people "obese" who aren't, just as many people fall into the "healthy weight " category and aren't. It's very much a sliding scale and not a one size fits all problem or solution. People, especially kids come in different sizes. I can't name one child off the top of my head right now that I know who needs to be in a fat boot camp. Not one. Kids come in different sizes. If its a child who is morbidly obese, lets fight that battle. But a child who is overweight? Lets deal with that at home. Furthermore, nobody needs to be in control of how we feed our kids, what camp they go to, or if they feel they could lose a few pounds. Do you realize how scary that is? If we placed feeding our kids in the hands of the government? They already get them 8 hours a day mon through fri. And you're willing to give them more freedom over our children. What's next? Food rations? Mandatory physical labor? I mean thats a scary direction...
... for a handful of morbidly obese kids on Maury.
Its not a handful America's fat kids are legion, a generation of obese kids cursed to lead miserable lives with weight related health problems all because parents are too lazy to raise their children right. If your shoveling lard down your kids throat everyday to the point where they are obese you are an abusive parent and damaging your kids health possibly for the rest of their lives both physically and mentally.
You should have had another option. No... the government is people's business enough.
Yeah but the wrong business. Eliminating childhood obesity is much more in the national intrest than war in the middle east. I bet if the Military got involved congress would take steps.
I do. we make sure they eat a healthy diet of acceptable portions and that they get plenty of exercise through outdoor plsy and sports like every good parent should.
You dont think that if your 10 year old kid has diabetes, high blood pressure and weighs 220llb thats not child abuse and damaging the child physically and mentally.
Does any abusive parent feel good when they get their kid taken from them?
why are you mad? Are your kids obese? do you feel like a bad parent?
I am no mad... just stating a fact. You go anon so you can make outrageous statements. And no my kids... who are grown... never had a weight problem. My daughter is 26 and barely weighs 100lbs. My son is 28 and weighs about 130lbs. I think you are the one with the problem. You want to tell other people how to raise their children. You need to worry about your children. What give you the right to in force your will on people?
"we the people"
Actually a conservative, I just dont want a legion of obese kids turn into obese adults that I the taxpayer will end up footing the bill for their welfare and healthcare until their death. Plus its child abuse, weight related health problems such as diabetes will last longer than say a black eye from a beating.
Well before anyone would take such a drastic step why don't we only server healthy food at school, regulate junk food advertisements towards children, tax junk food, ban certain food additives?
Let's face it, it's not the parents it's the food industry. All parents want what's best for their children. The food industry on the other hand just wants one thing, money
I agree the food industry plays a part but those that are responsible for children are parents. If your school does not provide healthy meals then you as parent must insure they eat healthy just as parents must insure their kids are being educated properly if the schools drop the ball. A key element missing from the parents of all obese kids is responsibility its easy to blame the food industry but if your feeding your kids large portions of fattening unhealthy food and not insuring they get enough exercise well thats on you, you can't always blame everyone else. Responsibility and self responsibility is an important lesson that parents don't teach their kids anymore.
Well actually no, sending your kids to school isn't as much the parents responsibility as it is the law. Not sending your kids to school will get you into jail. And they're free, they're tax financed. School is a great example of how the state dictates what is best. Of course parents should take responsiblity for their children's education beyond that, but the state ensures a minimum. So why should fast food be different?
The idea that you would forcibly take children from their parents, before regulating industry is absurd. And not just that, you are paying for their junk food with your tax money and then you want to spend more tax money on fat camps, instead of regulating industry, for free
Feeding your children buckets of fast food is a choice as much as not sending your kids to school. Parents are responsible for their kids health as with schooling, if parents drop the ball on childrens welfare its up to the government to take action. Its not thr chocolate bar factory owners fault you replaced your kids breakfast with his products. Time everyone stopped playing thr victim and blaming others and take responsibility for themselves and their kids like in any other country.
I choose no, if they want to lose weight they should do so at home where the parents are there and can help.
But thats the problem. If the parents aren't active or eating right themselves then what motivation are they going to get to do it themselves? Probably none because they got their habits from their parents.
here's the problem kids are being fed large portions of fattening unhealthy food that an adult wouldn't eat from a young age and are left to watch TV all day, before they are old enough to decide to lose weight and eat healthy they are already grossly obese? Your friend was a bit chubby at 14 thats what would be called puppy fat thats not the same as obese, with a little bit of exercise and a good diet she'd lose that.
still the same problem overfeeding kids.
would you allow a 7 year old to become obese? which is worse?
Why involve the government in this? Just educate these people. They have the freedom to be fat so let them be fat if they want to.
do they have the freedom to abuse their kids because thats what the parents of obese kids are doing.
Unfortunately fat acceptance and fast food culture are one of the worst American exports. Im sure where you live maybe morbidly obese kids are taken into care
sounds like you got the right idea over there
Your poll options don't reflect my answer.
No - because fat camp isn't a universal solution, and what do you do with the kids who fail, return them to parents? Foster them to thin people? Keep them in state orphanages?
It just makes no sense.
so do nothing until the turn 25 and we have to hire a crane to take them to hospital and hire an xray machine designed for zoo animals all at the taxpayers expense?
What sort of idiot thinks that the only alternative to your stupid ideas is "do nothing" ?
No, you cretin. Believe it or not, there are other solutions than the ones you put forward, and "do nothing". A whole range of possibilities in fact.
You obviously suffer from a failure of imagination.
last I checked liposuction and skin tightening ain't cheap.
Lol. What no
You can't take peoples kids and put them in camps. Putting people in camps by force is on some hitler sh*t
Hitler wasn't a great guy no ones saying that but during his leadership the Germans and Austrians especially the youth were never fitter or healthier. (obviously not including the German/Austrian Jews)
Lol. People where starving before him and dying from starvation. He just gave them food.
Yes, they need assistance.
I was overweight when I was younger and got high blood pressure.
Exactly assistance by taking the child away and helping the child lose weight. Sounds like you had bad parents. Sorry.
No, my mom was just uninformed.
But yeah I agree in some way
uninformed how exactly? how did she possibly miss the signs of your obesity?
I didn't look fat fat , I looked chubby cute but I was borderline
well thats just puppy fat its normal as your hormones change
No, I started dieting hardcore. Eating 300-900 calories a day
well that's good otherwise that puppy fat wouldn't have shifted.
I hope they exercised you too, thats an important as well.
It's a tough situation. They don't need to go to a camp. Their diet is usually the issue. I doubt many of them would want to make the diet change though. They also many not have the money for the lower calorie foods.
But yet they eat three times the food of an average person. Its better to eat less of more expensive foods than more of fattening foods.
the big problem is portion control, they buy more of cheaper foods and eat more.
thats my point exactly less is more.
I think we should increase sports in school
Definitely and get rid of some of the bullshit non-subjects they are trying to teach.
I don't think being fat should be totaly accepted in society, but I don't think you should force them into fucking fat camps. That's extreme.
to save them from their abusive parents?
a ten year old in hospital due to weight related health problems isn't abuse? A black eye or busted lip heals quicker than diabetes.
who is providing the food and paying for the electric for the child to sit upstairs and play xbox ten hours a day. If a parent is legally and morally responsible for a child up until the age of 18 why do you think letting your kids become obese and developing major health problems for the rest of their lives is ok?
its is if your overfeeding
who buys the food?
shoveling food into a childs mouth is child abuse. Parents are responsible for raising their kids not the tv or schools.
yes it is. Your parents are to blame for your fatness
Funny thats why America's fat kids are legion because parents dont take responsibility and give kids the option to be obese and damage their health for the rest of their lives.
Lol, schools give them bad food.
you csnt pack your kids a lunch? perhaps the schools can raise the kid for you from birth and you can swing by in 18 years when it graduates.
We give our kids a pack lunch and cook a warm meal at home at dinner time not to mention a balanced breakfast in the morning before school.
But isn't that what you want someone to take the responsibility out of parenthood?
Your excuse that they are failing doesn't help your child does it? when it comes to my kids education and health the schools may fail my kids but I never will.
You are not getting my point.
This is not about what parents can do for them, it's about what other's do when we are not there for them.
Social services taking our children, when public schools offer them bad food and acess to shitty snacks and insuficient education/examples, it's contraditory.
I'm answering your ask with a valid reason why we shouldn't go with camps NOW.
Instead, and first, use the money to change the public meals, boost education and make schools an example. See how that works and then we may, or not, OFFER parents solutions like camps.
Support prevention instead.
Services must work, that's why they exist.
I agree with your prention methods in schools and france has an excellent healthy school meals https://youtu.be/6Yus3KyEQWE
but I still say that as a parent you are ultimately responsible for your child's health and if the schools are serving unhealthy meals as my kid's school is then its up to you the parent to take action, thats why we pack a lunch and don't give them money for the candy or soda machines.
You forgot the option, "the government shouldn't be into family business like that".
If your kids are fat enough for the government to get involved then your guilty of child abuse as much as any parent that beats their child.
It is not like the parents are forcing them to get fat.
but they are responsible for their child's health they are the parents after all.
I know a lot of kids who are technically obese, but are a lot more healthy than a non obese person.
yeah but fat acceptance people want to move the line as to what is considered healthy
I know plenty of people who are obese that are healthy.
Also their is some illnesses that can cause people to obese.
obese people by definition are not healthy
Look at football players.
At what agd do they die of heart attacks?
When other people have heart attacks. Over weight doesn't always mean unhealthy.
the fact that their weight causes their heart says otherwise
I am done trying to debate with someone who wants to control other people's lives.
Life
I only want to control their weight big difference.
Nope, you just said they shouldn't be a football player.
Thats crazy who cares if they are fat or not lol
not fat obese. Do you not care about the children?
But why a camp tho thats weird
camp is fun and they get fresh air
No. Childhood Obesity is normal and acceptable in today's society
Should it be though?
One damn push-up IS the hardest thing I've ever tried to do and I'm skinny as frig! And a couple of those plus-sized models are pretty good-looking.
the camera doesn't show the stretch marks, cellulite or saggy titties, plus its a low light with a soft focus.
To be fair, they would probably look better if they were at least a bit thinner. XD
I feel like doing some harpooning when I see those land wales promoting morbid obesity
> I_I
This is such a loaded question lol
you disagree?
I disagree
why exactly?
Because how obese are we talking?
obese not overweight.
um no.
... whooa lol
no opinion?
no they shouldn't.
yes they should.
i don't see how anybody cares... but it's nice somebody at your age believes like a block his view is reality.
