I get the sense from some that they can't accept it as child abuse because childhood obesity is so common and normalised that they can't possibly consider that they, their neighbours, their family or anyone else they know may be terrible parents and want to blame the resulting childhood obesity on the food industry, government and schools for the unhealthy and immoral way too many kids are being raised today. Giving your child diabetes or other serious related weight problems is child abuse!!!

No. Sending children away to lose weight is a harsh way to go about it. Instead, parents should take classes to learn what healthy eating looks like and why it is important. They can then stop giving their children garbage and give them the foods they're supposed to eat. If the parents ARE educated, and still refuse to make a much needed lifestyle change for the sake of their family, the children can be put in a special school to learn about healthy eating.
You shouldn't scold them for being fat, ever, because that doesn't solve anything. It can lead to binge eating disorders or anorexia (it really just depends on how that child handles stress). Neither one of those outcomes are healthy, so do NOT fat shame a child.

There are so many other options than taking a child away from their parents. Overfeeding children isn't abuse or neglect, so there's really no reason to take them away.

My mother used to over feed me and keep me locked indoors from a young age in which I ended up as a grossly obese ten year old who couldn't walk without losing my breath, thankfully my dad got full custody and sent me to fat camp and kept me on a diet of healthy food and exercise. It took me up until I was fifteen to be I at a healthy weight.

I guess if it was so bad that warranted attention, I'd put the parents in a sort of probation to start making healthier eating choices for kids. One thing that REALLY bothers me is being in line at a grocery store behind a woman with her kids buying cookies and candy and cake and processed meal choices as no vegetables or healthy food options and then using her food stamps to pay for it all. That should be a first step that government could control.

We give our kids a pack lunch and cook a warm meal at home at dinner time not to mention a balanced breakfast in the morning before school.
But isn't that what you want someone to take the responsibility out of parenthood?

This is not about what parents can do for them, it's about what other's do when we are not there for them.

Social services taking our children, when public schools offer them bad food and acess to shitty snacks and insuficient education/examples, it's contraditory.
I'm answering your ask with a valid reason why we shouldn't go with camps NOW.
Instead, and first, use the money to change the public meals, boost education and make schools an example. See how that works and then we may, or not, OFFER parents solutions like camps.

but I still say that as a parent you are ultimately responsible for your child's health and if the schools are serving unhealthy meals as my kid's school is then its up to you the parent to take action, thats why we pack a lunch and don't give them money for the candy or soda machines.
