Does being in the military strip you of your individuality and sense of self?

This is something I've been mulling over for a long time. I've been toying with the thought of joining my states national guard. After all its just 2 day a month and an extra 2 weeks a year for what is basically easy money, as well as fitness and combat/survival training.
It would help me with monetary issues as well as get me in good shape along with the added benefits of being involved with the military being on my resume.
But i keep getting mixed responses, some say its a good idea since I won't be 100% indoctrinated. Others say even the short amount of time would be enough to make you lose sense of self.

If anyone has been in the military, can then give some clarity on this?
