Cultural appropriation is a BS term for petty people to separate skin tone and style. Throughout school, we always heard 'America is a melting pot', and as we grew we started to realize we didn't melt so well together, so some of us instead actively try to keep our substance from touching.
The cheongsam (chinese dress) incident a month or so ago is a perfect example. A douche who knew he could get a few minutes of spotlight called out a girl who genuinely loved a culture that wasn't her own, and wore it to show that. Thing is, the Chinese people born and raised in China, they thought it looked great and adorable. How can we decide what cultural appropriation is when the OGs don't have a problem with it. So no, I don't care about sharing all the things white people invented with other skin colors. Let everyone look how they want to.

Pretty much all of North American culture is cultural appropriation. To the degree that America and Canada have their own culture, it's basically a diverse mix of many other cultures.
Technically the term cultural appropriation can only be used when the item that is being appropriated is being used for someone else’s own benefit. For instance, say I go to India and buy a sari, and I wear it here in the US. That is not cultural appropriation even though some idiot is probably going to be offended by it. Cultural appropriation would be going to India and buying them in bulk, coming back to the US and selling them for money, because I’m adopting this cultural item and using it for my own benefit. A braid doesn’t really count as cultural appropriation.
I’m actually of the opinion that virtually everything is cultural appropriation. Therefore not only is cultural appropriation a human norm it’s also fair regardless of culture or item being appropriated. It is unfair and unbalanced for any given culture to claim appropriation is a form of disrespect or theft when the norm across millennia and cultures has been open exchange of ideas and goods

yes. much of our fashion have roots in different cultures. no big deal. cultural appropriation occurs every second, every minute, hour, etc of every day all over the world. rarely isn't a big deal
Seems like everything is these days!
No it's not at all this whole cultural appropriation is total BS it's only over privileged westerners, looking for anything to feel oppressed by. It's a real insult to people who actually gone through real oppression and suffrage to complain about something like this, if anything "cultural appropriation" shows we are more of a multi cultural society then we've ever been before.
As someone who's was born and raised in a extremely multi cultural, diverse city. I've grown up with friends from different cultures mainly from predominantly Asian backgrounds and they'd love to share their culture with me and others. My Indian friends would dress me up in their Sarees and put henna tattoos on my hands when ever I came round it felt so nice to be able to explore a new culture and I could tell it made them feel excited and full of joy to share it with me.
Also the dutch braid argument is so stupid do people not realise but many viking women braided their hair as well. If culture appropriation was a real thing and people actually worried about it we'd be no were in life. it's only cultural appropriation when it suits them. For example if we didn't copy from other cultures only white people would have things such as toilets, clean water and electronic equipment, other cultures would be hundreds of years behind us.Nope. There's no such thing as cultural appropriation, that's just a buzz word created by people so they can rant about being offended.
The reality is there's nothing wrong with sharing and celebrating parts of other cultures. That's kind of the whole point of culture, to be shared and celebrated.
Take the Chinese prom dress for example, you had a bunch of angry Americans yelling at some high school girl for what she was wearing, but go to China and you had lots of actual Asian people praising her fashion choice, feeling honored that she wore it.
People who are actually part of the culture, and aren't loony pc knights know that it doesn't actually matterThei is no culture that has not "appropriated" some ones elses culture. If you interact with some one you will eventually start borrowing things from them. Just look at your friends, you start to borrow words and phrases they use, maybe start getting into the same music or movies or what have you. This is natural and is in fact the reason why we have progressed so far so I would say no, its not cultural appropriation its nature, we are learning and developing and appreciating each other and that should never be looked down on. The term cultural appropriation was created by people who are trying their best to create as much division and strife as possible. We should be happy when some one appreciates something from our culture not angry, and we should be even happier when they build upon it as we all end up benefiting.
I think we can borrow fashions from each other as long as its not disrespectful Ie dressing up in a ceremonial outfit for a frat party.
I think refusing to accept others enjoying things your culture enjoys is pretty narrow minded and short sighted. Cultures aren't fixed, they evolve over time by exposure and interactions with other cultures.I don't believe in cultural appropriation period. Because, given that logic, anyone who wears anything that isn't their country's traditional garb is guilty. It's stupid. I'd understand if someone put on such a garb and made fun of it, but a fucking braid? It's a braid, your culture isn't suffering because someone wore it. Relax.
Right... well see everyone that dyes their hair red, whether white, black or Asian.. I demand you stop as you are cultural appropriating my culture, the Celtic culture..
How dare you dye your hair red without as much as a freckle to your face.. u semi Celtic Irish/Scots neverbes!
Lol joking but that’s how I see how ridiculous it is.. it’s hair keratin and every culture has itNever thought about it. Not something I am gonna think about. Its cute any one who can do it and look cute in it. Who cares where the hair style comes from. The only issue is giving some one else the credit of the hair style. Like how the 'boxer braids' came to play when everyone one knows they are corn rolls. Dont change the name and all is okay I think.
These are what they were call boxer braids though. The were calling cornrows boxer braids. And I believe something only becomes cultural appropriation once you take something and changes it's name. At the point you are trying to erase the history behind whatever it is.
I want to bang my head against the keyboard so hard that I will permanently destroy it and not have to see the words "cultural appropriation"
Here I goDutch braids are a European hair style for europeans. The only people who scream cultural appropriation are the ones who have offered nothing to the world so like the jelous bitter kid in the playground, they go around spreading bull shit in an attempt to divert other people's opinions of their greatness. 'They are horrible, they are mean, they copied me first, I have ten of then at home'. It's pathetic. White culture has been sold through the globalists markets so every man and his dog have adopted our way of living, they just pay for the privilege now to some huge corporation.
We all share things from each others cultures and different countries. Why can't we be happy that we get to share each others culture? I think thats good! The only time it isn't good is when someone is using that cultural thing in a demeaning or insulting way , or getting praised for it while a person from another race is getting put down for it (though I hardly see how that is the first person's problem, its more a fault of other peoples perception).
other than that i dont see the problem.God the only thing people should classify as “cultural appropriation” is saying the n word, or other derogatory racial slurs. the funny thing is, when halsey wore braids similar to those, everyone called her out on cultural appropriation but when nicki minaj used the chinese culture for a song no one batted an eye? is it really a race thing? or people just want something to cry about and blame white people
You have to be more specific. I mean if someone is wearing ditch braids, calls them Dutch braids... no. If someone renamed them claiming it as their own or just some new inspired style when it's obvious it's not... while the people who have mostly been wearing Dutch braids are being punished for wearing them/looked down upon.. then yea
Yes and that's not a bad thing. The people who complain about it are cry babies who really need to get a life.
Cultural approapriation is basicallly using somethi from a culture that isn't your own and that's okay. Everyone appropriates, and it isn't something to worry about.I don't think so to an extent. Where I think appropriation is bad is when a human uses another humans culture as a joke or makes a mockery of it. If the person adapting the style from another culture is honoring it then I don't see a problem.
Wear what you want
Do what you want
Live the life you want to live if possible
I live in the netherlands and it would be inapropiate here if u didn't wear what u want to wear or do what you want to do :PThis fascination with culture and misappropriation of it is ludicrous. Unrestrained liberalism has once again grabbed hold of you simple minded limbs and is gleefully creating havoc. Your question is about something that does not exist in the logically thinking persons world.
I think cultural appropriation is nosense. People Will always get the better things from other cultures. Only in that way we can improve. Only the greeks can have democracy?
