Do comedians have a lack of empathy?

Most people who are funny are extremely depressed.
They would lack empathy but not to the point of psychopathic.
Imagine switching between happy and then 2 hours later you sink into depression. Lack of empath, in a way, helps you deal with stress.
Not all comedians are like this, but a lot in the field of arts and theatre are. To create original comedy requires the left side of the brain to go full power to inspire creativity. This by itself makes you vulnerable to external emotions and develop irrational thoughts if you can't control your right side (logic). Leonardo da Vinci could control both sides. Van goth only controls the left. Robin Williams only controls the left as well.

i don't know how we can say this. they make jokes. so by definition they are typically not being serious but simply making light of situations. we'd have to examine individuals rather than the profession as a whole to say which individuals have or lack empathy

I think it depends on what they're talking about. If they are telling jokes about deaths, disasters, religion, racism, homophobia, xenophobia, then they might have lack of empathy.
These things are not funny and they shouldn't make jokes about it.

I asked that question because I notice many of them make a joke out of a disgrace. Some cross line, and people still laugh, some with guilt, others without any.

I don't think anyone laughs with guilt. Most people that watch comedians live know exactly what kind of jokes s/he tells. They bought tickets , so they must enjoy that type of humor.

... They are actors putting up a show. Why would empathy come up as an issue when someone is playing a role unless you speak about how they are in private.

I don't see a correlation there. My favorite comedians are actually ones who mostly make fun of people with lack of empathy.

The really successful ones do. You have to be empathetic to tweak the jokes in a way that makes everyone laugh, including those who would otherwise feel hurt by the jokes.
