My boyfriend wants to be a police officer.

Most police officers have a military background, however his does not. my brother in law and my dad are police officers and know how the system works, but I'm tired of asking them for advice so I'm asking on here.

The sooner my boyfriend gets a job the sooner he can move up with what he wants in life.. to be a police officer. my father was going to higher him as dispatch, but then other people with better applications got hired.. so I guess, he needs something below dispatch that will help him get to know people and get his name out there for references and so they can see how great a worker he truly is.

I was thinking like security at a college? or mall? but that's all I could come up with! anyone with suggestions would be great! thanks!

Associates degree from a college is the bare minimum for our city's police department. I'm a Criminal Justice dual major aiming for the federal government, but still know what police departments look for because of my major and just hearing it around. Our police usually sends their recruits to my school to obtain an associates degree. Police departments are looking for professional recruits with a variety of different skills. It's no longer an on-the-job grainy type of job as more and more people are going to college. They know that it's not unreasonable to demand at least an associates because plenty of people will go to college. The nature of law enforcement is also changing from what it was before. Police departments are looking for those people who are supposedly more intelligent (apparently going to college indicates this) because dealing with people when it concerns laws and rights is a very touchy subject. So I'd say that your boyfriend should probably go to school and get a Bachelor's degree. Getting an Associate's really doesn't mean much anymore and it would benefit him more to get a Bachelors. Way more people are getting Bachelor's degrees anymore, so he could possibly get passed up even with an Associates.

But for your boyfriend QA and at you Daniel, if you enlist in the military use it to it's greatest benefit. I'm not knocking anybody, but with military experience plus military funded college, you can go much higher than a local police department. If you really work for it and have those kind of odds in your favor, you will look very attractive to different agencies. It's the reason why I'm going for 2 degrees on top of extra training to make up for lack of military experience.
