As a state it has a GDP on par with the country of Ecuador, but produces that GDP with 1/8th of the population. Per capita GDP is between Japan and Italy. Their service based industries are primarily healthcare, hospitality, and education related and they have a large industrial base providing manufacturing capabilities and a robust oil, gas, and mining industry as well as an agricultural sector along side wholesaling and transpiration industries that come with ports located along the Mississippi river and Gulf of Mexico. Being that they out perform Italy on a person to person basis, the second largest industrial power in Europe when it comes to industrial production, as a state they are relatively powerful in comparison to most of the world.

I grew up splitting my time between my Mom's place in Mississippi and summers with my Dad in Southern California. Turned 18 and immediately moved to California. Never once regretted it. Now not everyone in Mississippi is a toothless hillbilly or racist redneck but there are a substantial number. I can confirm that there is a substantial if quiet progressive minority there-mainly African American and Progressive Whites. A strong majority of whites identify as Conservative Republican. There are also people of education there (Faulkner was from Oxford, MS). Evangelical Christianity there however looks more like Christo-Fascsim and their values are completely out of step with the rest of the nation. Alabama is just as bad. All that said, some of the best people I know are there (all are progressives).
