Kurds are largest ethnic group that has no country and their language has been banned in Turkey till early 2000's. Their living situation haven't been great in Syria and Iran either. Yes. There was a TV commercial that aired during the gulf war. Small Kurdish children were thanking America for their help. The commercial got pulled within a few days. I suppose to some assholes, it was offensive that someone should thank America for anything.

I'm all for it. I think the US should have pushed for that during the Iraq War. At the time, that would have alienated fellow NATO member Turkey considerably. Bad timing.
Well, this is a fundamental problem for the Kurds really.
Turkey is strategically located and is currently a US ally via NATO. This helps keep Russia in check. Turkey is also the only Muslim member of NATO and that's important too.
What the Turks did to the Armenians and Kurds is not good - eastern Turkey should go back to those peoples - but America pushing for that alienates the Turks which is something that Russia would want. The Iraqis and Iranians don't want to give up territory either. However, if a genuine Kurdistan existed, it would be a very good US ally in another good strategic location.
For an independent Kurdistan, the PKK or whoever would push for that needs to step up and be funded clandestinely as they fight a guerilla war to establish Kurdistan... a guerilla war against 3 or 4 countries: Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Russia and the US would have to officially be neutral or even be against it to keep Turkey in its orbit and not get too friendly with the Russians.
Sadly, what should have happened was 100 years ago after the fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of WW I, the British should have used their power to create a Kurdistan to help keep the Turks in check. However, the British were real racists back then with a major superiority complex and didn't give a shit about how they broke up the empire, let alone, creating Kurdistan.
So everyone who identifies as English should have their own country. Everyone who is scottish should have their own country. Everyone who decides they are Prussian should have their own country. Everyone who decides they are Normandy should have their own country. Everyone who decides they are southerners should have their own country. Thats not how the world works and by breaking large nations into smaller ones just means there will be more conflict in the future. From larger countries wanting to absorb them to other small countries wanting hating them cuz whatever.
I do support the Kurds but I don’t think Turkey is going to respond to kindly. Why not declare independence in North Iraq if you already have sub-autonomy there?
This is a very complex issue. In short, they claim that they have rights in this land and are promised autonomy but throughout history, no one promised them.
