Ignoring the very real "dont accept drinks from strangers" problem and sticking to the "morality" of whether it's right or wrong to accept a drink without talking to the person who bought it

I wouldn't say "owe" but it's definitely bad manners. There's nothing stopping someone from declining the offer, and the obvious implications behind buying someone a drink in the 1st place can't be ignored. Men buy women drinks at bars because it's a societal expectation of men to extend that courtesy before trying to engage in conversation. It should come as no surprise why he offered. No one just thinks, "hmmm I'm gonna be nice to this random girl I've never met and just buy her something". Realistically, most guys would rather not buy a girl a drink at all but society has its gender roles for men too yanno

yeah i'd say so... but that doesn't mean they get to be rude or touchie feely from the get go. doesn't mean they are entitled to date or go home with you either.

but yeah hear them out. you can also opt out of the conversation later if you are feeling uncomfortable.

I think if someone offers to buy you a drink and you accept the drink, that’s a sign that you’re interested. I don’t necessarily think that you’d owe that person anything, but if you’re not interested in talking, you should probably just refuse the offer.

I look at it this way. Although you don't owe it to him. You do accept whatever you get for choosing to disregard him when you knew what the meaning behind accepting it was.

If things get uncomfortable. While you didn't owe him a conversation... that's on you. You know what you did.

If a guy buys you a drink, you are not obligated to talk to him. He may want to talk to you, and you should say thank you for the drink, but I don't think you are obligated to talk to the guy.
From my perspective, I offer to buy a drink for a lady, it is because I find her attractive and I want to be masculine and treat her like a lady and buy her a drink. It is a form of chivalry, but I don't expect anything in return.

Hence it's always best to decline a first offer to see how they'll react. If it's with anger, then you know it's time to find the cameras or your friends, and stand beside them.

This is one of these stranger American things. However, the last time I was in NYC near the NYPL a man bought me a drink and we ended up talking for an hour. However, I have never bought a woman a drink, I'm too shy.
