No, but I was a scout for a couple of years. I think the big thing, depending on how much you remember of your brownie days, is to try to restrain your envy. Even observing as a near-toddler, I remember looking back on when mom would bring me to my sister's Girl Scout meetings and noting that Cubs got to do WAY cooler stuff, which struck me as unfair. Their cookies DID beat our popcorn, though. Gotta give 'em that.
Also, depending on the ages involved, you WILL at some point have to confront the sad realities of the Pinewood Derby:
😂😂😂😂😂😂 the cartoon is accurate. Also girls can join BSA now too!
I was in the Scouts, which meant that my mother was a den mother. As @TrueConfection said, make sure that you snacks are top quality. That's all that Cub Scouts care about.
Yep! No matter what happens, the snacks will make or break the meetng.
Nope! I’ve never even been a Girl Scout. DGMW, I think the GSA is fantastic! They give girls an excellent foundation for future life, and helps girls build self esteem. One only need look at the list of female CEOs, astronauts, engineers, and leaders in all fields who were themselves Girl Scouts, which is legion, to see the good GSA, and scouting in general, does for girls and young women!
Bring snacks. Bring a plan that involves more breaks than structure. Bring more snacks.
Lmao! I have snacks for dayyyys with 2 boys.
I'd bring the book along and give them the choice (out of 2 or 3 nax) of which ONE skill they want to work on.
Yes. One skill only. I might even choose in advance for them lol
That's always the easiest. But... You want them to lead with your help. You'll have to let them make some choices.
That is true. We will ease into it. This is just the first year. Lol
Thank you for the MHO ❤

I went through the ranks to Eagle Scout, in my youth. My oldest went through the ranks in Girls Scouts to Golden and my youngest was Silver. When they were young I was a Girl Scout leader for Juniors and Seniors. When I started out I had 5 Juniors. 5 years later I had two co-leaders and 50 girls. What was my theory? What made our troop successful? I gave the girls the option of following or leading. They were able to make decisions of where they wanted to go, what they wanted to do, and I would help them make it happen. Every decision was theirs. It gave them the confidence they weren't getting from other venues.
I really love that! Those skills are quite valuable in adult life!
Amazing!
No, but both my sons were in Cub Scouts. I used to help out my son's scout leader anytime he needed some help.
My oldest had a good experience with scouting. The scout leader did lots of activities and every year we did the Klondike which was fun. He stayed in it through Webelos. He was pumped to be an Eagle Scout but he left the scouts during the first year. None of his friends went into it.
My youngest did not have a good experience. His scout leader was a woman who used to just get the kids to play in her backyard while she yakked on the phone. I think he only went a year or two.
I guess the big event is the Pinewood Derby.
Pinewood derby is a big event. And Summer and Winter camp.
We also do a cake auction and a nice dinner and a hayride (that was tonight).
Lmao! I took oldest to winter camp one year. He vomited at 5 am. 😂 That sucked. Hubs was shocked to find us at home. Youngest was thrilled to have me back. Apparently he really missed me.
Oh it was freezing. I was relegated to the dorm for moms with sons so we each had our own room with bunk beds. 😂
This might be because I'm high rn. Like VERY high. But I read this and just read a bunch of "Scouts" everywhere and you lost me by like the second or third one.
Do you have to be American to get this or is this something I should also be knowing?
Lmao! Boy scouts, cub scouts. Is this not a thing in Canada?
I guess it is BSA, Boy Scouts of America.
My sister tells me they are a thing, apparently my youngest niece was a brownie. I'm informed that's where the chocolate bars I loved so much came from.
I, personally have never heard of the scouts or any other form of this aside from American tv so this is the first I'm hearing of this organization in Canada.
We had Cadets as a boy but I wasn't in them.
My brother was. I stayed in and played chess, joined science and debate teams and played in band like a good little nerd.
Sounds similar! Girl scouts here are known for tasty cookies. 😍
Yeah they don't sell cookies in Canada, they sell these fucking awesome chocolate bars that come in these huge boxes.
I remember doing it as a boy because they're the same ones the schools sell and they're all so damn good.
Gosh that was long ago. I was an assistant cub scout leader. Everything has changed now. All the projects are more advanced in technology. And from what I am reading, girls are also welcome in the cub scouts. Girls have been in the boy scouts for many years. My nephew was in a group that had a boat and went on many adventures.
It took a lot when it was just boys, but adding girls can be problematic, especially in any outings, though cubs do far fewer of those.
Yes for the, Back there was Tigers, Bears, Wolf and Webelo.
I almost became a Den Mother for the Brownies to
Yup! Now it’s Lions, Tigers, Bears (oh my!), Wolf, Webelo I and Webelo II
I never did girl guides as a kid, not sure why my parents choose not to enrol me in that sort of thing, but I took figure skating lessons, piano lessons, and I went on two skiing trips, one as a 10 year old and one as a 12 year old.
I have experience helping out , I'm not a trained member like they are...
Go to your cub scout master and or committee person and see what you can do to be involved more
I’m in charge of our local scouting for food event. That is my my job. And hubs provides the food and grilling for rocket day. We have our jobs. Lol. I just really didn’t want to sign up for 5 years of den leader. 😂
I always wanted to be a Girl Scout, but my parents could never afford it. My mom understands, because she wanted to be one and her parents had in fact MUCH less money than mine did when I was younger.
I was a Cub Scout for one year then stopped lol. I think i just sucked at it
Awwww. How can someone suck at being a cub scout? It’s games, songs and light memorization basically. Lol
I think i was just more interested in playing video games at home instead of doing that lol
Mine are too. Nope! We are getting out and about!
I've never been either. All I have done is a fair amount of things like grounds work for scout and guides sites. Which are the older groups in UK
no. i've heard gay things
Like what? I’m not a pedo. Just a mom helping out with kid activities.
scout leaders having jerk off sessions with the cubs. boy scouts is a gay institution
No it is. Stfu and gtfo my post. We don’t do any of the sort and we teach morals and respect.
Nope, but I used to be a Cub Scout, and have all the merit badges to prove it… will Suit up and wear them for you if that’s your thing… 🖤☠️🖤
I went from cub to eagle. Never was a leader
Awwww congrats! Well done!
I loved being a cub scout
My kids do too! It’s a great program.
Naw.
I have not
No idea...
No idea if you have been a scout den leader? 😂
