I'm not saying the police should do everything, but the problem with vigilantes like we see on TV is that they are not transparent, how do you know if you aren't a target of some vigilante? There's an anime called Death Note, at some point one of the vigilantes start killing people for being lazy, how is that justice? It makes us too vulnerable to whatever the vigilante think is wrong.
Now, if the vigilante only targets murderers and rapists, without giving a shit to any other types of crimes, then there's still the problem of due process, the suspect of the crime should have the right to defend himself, what if he's innocent? Vigilantes like Dexter don't allow that, they just kill people.
And also, if real life vigilantes work really hard to catch the right suspects, then they wouldn't make that much of a difference, they aren't superheros with a script on their size. They'll put themselves in dangerous situations very quickly.
What I see happening in my country is a group of vigilantes (which is necessary, one vigilante doing all the job is dangerous and not very productive), we call them the "militia", they are cops/ex-cops who kill bandits on the spot, but sometimes they start engaging in criminal activity themselves, they need money to continue their operations, so they start demanding taxes from people living in the area, which is just the formation of a proto-state.
yes, i'd agree that most police are just as immoral as the guys they arrest
It’s very important to remember that the average individual is very, very stupid, or at very least, very, very SELFISH, and probably needs to be controlled and guided through life if we desire any semblance of an organized, cooperative society. That’s really just a “human problem.” Like I absolutely DO NOT “trust people to make good decisions.” I have very little faith in humanity to do pretty much anything right when it comes to universal decency. So I don’t trust a random human to correctly assess and respond to any situation in life that evokes any sort of emotional response from them. Unfortunately, police are just people selected from this pool of embarrassment we call humanity, given a little training, and we expect them to be better. I think the unfortunate reality is that we’re meant to live wild, and live or die based on our own fitness for survival, all this artificial shit we’ve created to do otherwise is simply bogus.
Because vigilantism would lead to even more violence. Isn’t that the lesson learned by the Rittenhouse trial or Ahmed Arbury’s murder? In both cases, lives were lost because of a citizen’s decision to take the law into their own hands. Law enforcement sometimes calculates (correctly I might add) that loss of property is preferable to loss of life and does not act. If we have vigilantes running the streets, we’ll just devolve into anarchy.
If thugs continue to rule the streets we will also have anarchy. Which anarchy would you prefer to have? You living or you dying?
The point is that vigilantism doesn’t solve violence. It never has. It only adds to the problem. We aren’t safer having citizens out there provoking confrontation. It’s a foolish belief.
That's how law was brought in the old west. Today it is like the old west again with shootings in the streets every day. If we had more vigilantes' thugs would think twice as now they have no fear even if they do get caught.

@Daniela1982 i do have a westworld fantasy
@Daniela1982 Criminals aren’t deterred by armed police or the prospect of losing their freedom or their life. What makes you think they’d somehow be deterred by an untrained civilian? You really believe the Wild West was safer due to its lawlessness? You're just spouting nonsense at this point.
You want random person to decide for themselves if something you do is criminal or not, and dish out whatever punishment they see fit?
I’m sure nothing could possibly go wrong with that idea.

Vigilantes sounds like lynch mobs or lawless killers. But I have no problem with armed militias of good citizens keeping the peace when the police are incapable of doing so.
Having a badge doesn't always make someone more capable or honorable.
The thing that is incorrect about how cops do their jobs is they fail to remain impartial or they fail to avoid acting on anger or fear. A vigilante would be immune to none of those things and, indeed, much more likely to be worse, as it is anger that would be most likely to drive someone to being a vigilante in the first place.
The problem is you are assuming the police are not doing the job correctly based on the limited information you aquire. There is always more to the story. That is the point of trials. Get all the information and then decide if they are guilty.
We need to get rid of Municipal Police all together and take all that money and then just fund the Sheriff's Office. Because when you support police are hired by a city or town and they can hire whoever they want and make whoever they want Chief at least with the sheriff the sheriff's an elected official and if he wants to keep his job he has to be good to the people so I'd rather have the sheriff and charge then have Municipal Police cuz they're basically hired thugs that are Revenue collectors
Nope.
We need some level of order in society. The vigilante is not trained and it would devolve into people seaking revenge for all kinds of stuff. Also , with a mob of vigilantes you would have no rights. They would just assume you are guilty and hang you. No right to silence, no right to an attorney.
If (according to you) cops can't do their job correctly with all the law enforcement and investigation tools at their disposal, what makes you think vigilantes will do a better job?
Vigilantism would also abolish due process and habeas corpus. Do people's rights mean nothing to you? Are you really this stupid?
do you really think judges and juries can do their jobs? are you this stupid?
So you want to abolish the police, judges, and juries in favor of mob rule. I stand corrected. You're even dumber than I thought.
as long as the mob has morals. i don't think the kkk or hate groups is considered vigilantism
Yeah because mobs with morals happens all the time. 🙄 Even way dumber than I thought.
Cops never catch criminals. They just make paper work for payments and court hearings on civilians.
The truth is that if the authorities cannot or will not maintain order, eventually vigilantes, then organized crime, will impose order.
Because without the rule of law the economy will collapse and you end up in a failed nation run by warlords. We’ve had vigilante justice in the US. It tends to punish the innocent while protecting the guilty.
Because everyone will eventually call the themselves a 'Vigilante' and their ego will take over!
Only a trained professional knows how to work a case, just like how Dexter had been trained by his officer father!
Why would that be any better? A bunch of armed unorganized randos taking control? Sounds great!
The police have no obligation to protect you. If they won't you have only yourself to have your back.
@Daniela1982 They do, its literally their job. Just because they aren't doing their job right doesn't mean you resort to anarchy.
It was ruled in court that the police have no obligation legally although most do. But did you see the police in Portland doing anything to protect people? No, they were hiding behind the lines.
@Daniela1982 so that means anarchy?
If unchecked riots, looting, and burning isn't anarchy then what is?
what's sad is that @daniela1982 is right. the police don't have to do anything. how sad is that? they're doing just fine getting paid out of your tax money
Because who will then police the vigilantes? The Joker?
Vigilante's aren't usually about law enforcement, they are about revenge.
@exitseven I could see that if a riot was happening nearby, a mob or something. Not just self defense if someone breaks in, but actually standing guard.
I think of vigilante's as someone chasing down a suspected criminal to make them pay, judge jury and executioner.
Considering they let killers out of prison and then they turn around and kill someone else, you can see the law is lame. Sometimes killers, especially serial killers, is something this world doesn't need.
@Daniela1982 Oh I agree, but mobs or vigilante's better be sure... history has shown sometimes they get a innocent person and then disburse with no accountability.
Although I tend to favor them, like exitseven said especially for defending property from rioters or looters, standing guard.
Because that's stupid. The law, even when faulty, has its place in society. Vigilantes can get things wrong and destroy lives. You know what considers itself a vigilante group? The KKK
Where you see problems in police you will se a liberal government who defunded the police so cops say fuck this
Are you watching the new Dexter series?
i am. it's starting slow, but it's good to see him back in action. you know harrison is gonna be worse than dexter lol
i hate our justice system and i hate the cops as well
You can be know the laws.
Go be Batman or the punished lol
Good luck to you.
So you want things to be even worse?
Let's have one of those "Purge" things where for 24 hours anything was legal. I'm sure you would see a lot of killers, drug dealers, rapists, pedophiles, and scum of the Earth eliminated. We might even feel like we can take an evening walk without being mugged or assaulted.
That's what I'D like to know!
Nobody is perfect at any job.
Because liberals bitch about that too
Bad idea
