They are proxies to the ideological battles the US has between China and Russia. Specifically, is democracy "better" than Russian or Chinese communism. The measure of "better," unfortunately, seems to be "which is more effictive at whipping their population up into a violent mob determined to see the end of another country?" This is what the cold war was about. Russia only lost that because Chernobyl bankrupted the USSR. But one could argue that was still a valid reason to lose since the same propaganda they used to stir up their citizens was also used to keep the dangers of their reactors alive.

Unfortunately (?) the US is pretty much on its back in this contest and Russia seems to have picked up where they left off at full steam. A population can not be whipped up against another county if it is already whipped up against itself. Which is why Russia went to such great lengths to install Trump. But then again, maybe it's time we as a species put some of these international pissing contests behind us. I'd propose a bait and switch. Ukraine isn't important at all, though the EU sees it as a buffer against Russia. Most EU countries are US allies, and most former Eastern Bloc countries that are now part of the EU and/or NATO hate Russia. The US would rather treat Poland as the buffer against Russia, given a choice.

Taiwan is a buffer against Chinese expansion into the Pacific, which threatens the US allies of South Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand as well as the states of Alaska and Hawaii. Taiwan is also run by the Chinese faction that the US supported (or failed to support) during Mao's revolution.

That's historically speaking anyway. The current US administration has a lot of corrupt practices with Ukraine but understands the political gravity of an overt alliance, and would pretty happily let China seize Taiwan as long as it doesn't hurt it's image too badly. Frankly, Australia and Japan are far more concerned about Taiwan than the US is.
