They are not a viable alternative to masks with how masks are being used as of now.

FFP2 (N95) masks are common over here. Where and when masks are required, they have had to have been medical or FFP2 for a year or more. Almost all cloth masks in use before then were triple layered. The Omicron variant produces even more virus than Delta did, so reducing the amount that escapes your system by whatever percentage a simple mask does allows through more than before. They've always reduced output by some percentage. They've never been totally useless, as you both want to pretend.
