Well it kind of depends on the reason for not tipping, a good waitress/waiter usually gets tje equivalent of $2 for each person at the table from me unless it's just 2 people or just myself then I'll leave a $5 bill, but if they didn't refill or ask if anybody wanted a refill and the plates didn't get picked up I will only leave $1 and that's even if their were 7 or 8 of us at the table.
But yeah to the jerks that just don't tip no matter what, I think they should definitely work one of them kind of jobs for a week so that they can see how important them tips can be for some especially waiters that only make like $5 an hour because those are expected to make up the rest of they're pay.
I tipped a young girl a sonic yesterday actually just for bringing our food out, I was digging for my money still as she went back in but I pushed the button and said I have a tip for the waitress that just brought our food out and even though it was a different girl that came and got it I know that the one that it was meant for got it because she came out and thanked us and it made her day and that is great00 Reply

Tipping is bad behavior created by American restaurants. It’s completely destroyed other countries and created huge amount of tourist traps and begging/scamming in poorer countries. Now these countries completely rely on tourism and tipping to grow their wealth. People who get angry at people who don’t tip, don’t understand the history of tipping and why it was created to begin with. Now tipping has grown so bad, they have even added gratuity on top of tipping, which is mandatory. What would cost $10-20 in actual food cost ends up costing $60-100. The only justification for tipping would be DELIVERY only. Because that is a different service in itself. Waiters could easily be replaced by ordering food online or on a tablet in the restaurant. Walking the food to a table is just the job and shouldn’t be considered extra effort, any less than someone at Walmart getting carts in the parking lot. I wish this tipping thing died off and people had a change in mentality and stop shaming people. Because in reality, only a few countries in the world actually tip.

+1 yI say it depends why they didn't, I'm not a fan of just tipping poor service when they were terrible.
Pizza I'll say is a joke, they have a delivery fee that people think is a tip but it isn't, they should just raise the price and get rid of that.
If someone is cheap even though service was great, I would remember that when I was a server, and not pay as much attention to them.
I personally never had much trouble earning tips, I focused on my tables and did great. Others who would stand around and talk and ignore them, would then complain they got stiffed all the time. I'd think, well DUH.14 Reply- +1 y
U remember them. Thats a little scary. Nobody mess with her
- +1 y
@Anonuser838383 For the regulars yes, as there is always a group of regulars. I often did so good though with TIPS that others would complain and say we should switch to group tipping, per section.
- +1 y
Thats bullshit. Its not just about attitude either, some waiters just suck at knowing how to handle a table. Honestly im more likely to tip someone who does their job and is aloof but friendly enough. Does that describe u? I feel like its the least annoying type of waiter
- +1 y
@Anonuser838383 I would try to be friendly and knowledgeable and work with them if they wanted things customized and pay attention, if I saw them looking around, head over soon as possible.
Others would bring food then go chat with their friends and ignore tables for a bit. I didn't do it for long but those others had done it for years and seemed burned out and no longer cared. I made at least triple minimum wage every night, so yeah would of been BS to do group sections, they never did but would of sucked for me.
+1 yI make over 100k a year and my husband makes over 100k a year and since both of our mothers were waitress we have a tendency of tipping pretty well whenever we do eat out. which is rare. I have been everything from dirt poor to financially well off so I can understand when some one who just barely afforded the meal dosent tip. I mean sucks for the waitress but it is what it is. But if you are well off throw em some scratch.

+1 yWell…I’ve learned tipping culture isn’t the same everywhere, so I’d need to know where they were from. But assuming we’re in America where we know full well that our tips constitute the majority of the person’s earning, you’re an absolute cocknozzle if you don’t tip at least decently. I don’t want to hear any excuses…whether you think we should be expected to tip or you think they should be paid a full wage and the tipping be optional, YOU KNOW WHAT THE SYSTEM IS. And not for nothing, you have a pea-sized brain if you think the cost of the meal wouldn’t just go up. I managed a restaurant, I know the numbers, they barely make a profit as it is, you think THEY’RE going to just eat that increased cost? Just lmfao, you must not know any business owners, if that’s what someone thinks. Your $12 meal will go up
to $17, instead of $12 and giving five extra bucks to the delivery kid. You won’t personally save any money, unless you’re already the aforementioned cocknozzle who tips poorly as it is. There’s nothing more cringe than overhearing a table of people looking for point deductions on their experience to justify leaving a smaller tip, all to probably save like four dollars. Be a bigger peasant, you can’t😂😂😂 Like I’ve been broke, I’m not broke now but it’s not because I did anything special lmao, so I don’t say this from snooty place, I say this as a former poor person with no shred of “look-at-me-I-made-it” arrogance….. that is some BROKE. ASS. SHIT😂😂😂 Like that’s some shit where if it was me, I might just give you the tip back on some “you CLEARLY need this more than me. Take care of yourself, bless up.”🙏😂
00 Reply Gratuity should not be a thing.
It's a cynical culture manufactured by employers that wish to shift the burden of responsibility for fair recompense of their workers onto a third party, in this case the customer.
It's stupid, and the workers who take their rage out on the customer, rather than their employer who is the one exploiting them while laughing behind their back, are fucking idiots and a big part of the problem.
I don't fucking care that it's "the situation you are in".
Bring your complaint to YOUR FUCKING EMPLOYER or get a different job, thanks.10 ReplyI used to be kind of a jerk about tipping. I always calculated exactly 15%, & gave less if they did a bad job.
Then I got a job in the corporate office of a restaurant company, & I got to spend a lot of time in the restaurants. I got to see first-hand how hard most of them worked, & all the stuff they had to deal with.
After that, I started tipping at least 20%, usually more. Of course, if they do a *really* bad job I would give less, but I try to be compassionate. I take into account how many tables they're taking care of & things that are out of their control.
I couldn't imagine not leaving any tip, unless they were outrageously bad.00 Reply
Anonymous(36-45)+1 yI don't tip because I don't have money to waste on stupid bullshit and the US is the only country in the world with that ass-backwards, shitty tipping system where I'm supposed to give someone $20 for some bullshit like carrying food from point A to point B for doing the bare fucking minimum of their job.
I already stated in another question that I would rather never go to a place that expected me to tip, or ever order pizza, if I had to do it. Because fuck wasting money on nothing other than social validation and fake respect from strangers. Maybe if the tipping system wasn't so shit, people could actually get paid a living wag for their jobs, instead of fucking bitching at me for not wanting to waste $20 on nothing for a job literally anyone with legs can do.
Fuck tipping and if you don't like that, blow me. I couldn't care less about wasting my money on bullshit.10 Reply1.9K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. When I worked in the States I did not know that tips were expected until it was explained to me, so I'd pay the minimum unless the service was good/exceptional, what others tip I have no view on.
Tipping is not a thing in the UK but if I get good/exceptional service I'll tip the one who provided the service directly not through the bill.
(UK National Living Wage £8.91($11.97) going up to £9.50($12.76) April 2022) though most restaurants/pizza places pay way more than this, there is no extra sales tax as you have in the States, the price you see on the menu is what you pay.00 ReplyI don't think anything. Its normal. I live in England where its not expected to tip because over here people get the paid minimum wage, so waiting staff do not need to rely on the customers.
If you really want to tip someone for good service, or you're on a good mood that day and want to be nice you can though. Its just not expected of you.30 Reply
Anonymous(30-35)+1 yI didn't tip earlier because I was literally living from paycheck to paycheck (simultaneously studying AND working both full time!) and calculating my costs VS the weight or volume I was getting from certain menu items and so my diet depended mostly on eating out.
Now I am making adequate amounts of money and occasionally I leave a little tip here and there. The waiters turned out to be happy with me it seems and seem to treat me better. If I am not mistaken I got larger portions a few times too.03 Reply

12.1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Nothing. They pay the bill in full, and tip as they feel. It is not their job to provide the wage the employer is failing to.
This is a part of the asshole work culture that America has become. Government helping employees is "socialist". But employers not paying their employees properly, and forcing them to rely on tips is seen as "business".10 Reply1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I think they are fantastic , the problem is not with these people , the problem is with the entire ludicrous system in USA called " tipping " where you are in essence giving the business owner a free kick , to not pay correct wages , and by tipping you are encouraging this utterly horrendous inhumane system -- the system uses you..
NEVER FEEL OBIGED to tip -- Thank god the USA is just one country , its not how it is everywhere else.00 Replytipping should be optional. Imagine your lunch costing 15.99 and then tax which is an extra 2 dollars. Then now your waiter expects a 3-4 dollar tip. You're throwing an additional 6-7 dollars into the cost of your food. Not everyone has an additional 6-7 dollars to play around with. Sure if you have the money then it would be no problem. But in my opinion, Tipping should be optional.

I don’t think it’s right for a small meal to cost over 22-23 dollars. Completely depends on the country. In the US, I think it's rude not to tip, as waiters need these tips to get a normal income. So I always tip, at least 10-15%, even if the service was bad. 15-20% in case of good service.
In European countries, waiters get a normal wage and in such cases I round up the bill or give a tip of around 10% in case the service was noticeably good.00 ReplyIt's perfectly normal to not tip, a practice that is not followed in about 99% of the countries on Earth.

Don't screw with people preparing your food if you value your health. - +1 y
@Juxtapose If such an attitude is rampant in the US, then they don't deserve the tips and it's no wonder their employers won't just pay them.

@CountessSarah frankly I just wish the tip system would disappear and employers would pay their employees a living wage.
450 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. It's a funny concept. I love big companies and corporation made it so that they can underpay their workers without any backlash and will shift the blame on customers for not paying extra to support the workers. The workers should be paid proper wages and tips should be a something extra they earn, not the primary portion of their wage they need to survive.

I always tip at least 30% because I worked as a pizza delivery driver for over a year and I know how important tips are to make money. I was pretty frustrated at grubhub when they didn't allow me to tip on an order so I had to call customer service to put it on.00 Reply1.7K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. It's a cultural thing for me, where I am from a tip is basically an insult like "Don't look down on me, I'm not poor".
Since I've since moved abroad, I'll either tip the mandatory 12.5% like in the UK or if it's optional, I'll tip if someone did more than their most basic job description. How does it work where you are from? Where I'm from, the cost of delivery is always an extra price. They get their own pay. No need to tip.

@LovingLoverReturned There's not an extra price for delivery, you can get "free" delivery if you get a big amount of food, but those delivery guys don't even get a minimun wage for their job and they rely entirely on tips. So of course, people who refuse to tip here are miserable cheapstakes.
