So. A hijab is basically like wearing a dress. It is highly gendered. There are some male equivalents but strictly speaking this is like taking on a religiously loaded piece of clothing and then using it to crossdress - in a religion where strictly speaking, crossdressing is very bad.

I think at best it would be seen as inconsiderate and thoughtless and at worst as the guy making an effort to insult others.

There are however variants for men.

Of course the actual writing never says muslim women need to wear a hijab. It really just says to cover up their beauty lest the men get too distracted to do their work. The whole hijab and all is strictly someone's interpretation of a not very important sentence.

In a similar fashion the bible actually says, on a not very important line, that any man with missing or injured male genitalia may not enter a church.

While it refers to eunuchs, technically speaking this is the bible saying that any dude missing his foreskin can not go to church (or heaven). But well, it is one line. People never saw fit to make a whole culture around it. And so luckily for any dude missing some skin, he probably may still attend church.

But well, easy answer is still that you'd be going out of your way to offend muslims if you did that.

More like it is quite pointless and making it an actual hijab is probably going to be offensive. You can absolutely wear equally covering apparel and be just fine though. There exists many such options, in or outside of Islam.

Take a hijab and use it to make a shirt and a pair of pants with it. Is that material still sexist or racist depending on who wears it?
Take a mini skirt and sew a crotch into it. Is it still considered cross-dressing if a guy wears it?
And, why is it ONLY when guys wear something girls normally wear considered cross-dressing but it's never so for girls that wear guys' clothes?

Okay just see it like clothing piece. You like it, you wear it. You don't like it, you don't wear it. It's just that Muslims wear it mostly. I don't like it even as Muslim, I don't wear it. Simple. Just wear what you like to. If the guy truly wants to wear it then no problem. Your body, you clothe it the way you want it.
