A red-neck with a home-made machine gun* or home-made rocket/grenade launcher could kill half the senate or house of representatives single-handedly if they planned their attack well enough, and they might not even die in the attempt, as it would catch the Secret Service and the other Security Personel with their dicks in their hands, as nobody actually expects that to happen.

*Yes, some machinists are good enough to make a home-made machine gun or RPG in their garage or basement. If you've ever watched the television show "Sons of Guns" they even showed you most of the steps to make a home-made 50 caliber machine gun, which would be perfect for assassinating Senators from the back of a SUV. So not only are political massacres possible, but it's possible to massacre the politicians before any Security forces would even know the attack started.

The other day, the Senators were all out on the steps of Capitol Hill posing for a photo op "in support of Ukraine". One person with a concealed home-made machine gun could have killed everyone in the crowd before Security would have had a chance to do anything.

Given how hyper focused on politics people are and the massive amount of division politics creates, both sides of the political isle could be pushed into carrying out a political massacre. Because it's less about politics and more about human behavior, our through process, emotions and most importantly human history.

That and when you start looking into events leading up to, during and after the civil war political massacres have already taken place. People in both the north and south carried them out.

You don't justify killing people for future atrocities. Plus, by the time of Mountain Meadows the church had split into 6 different churches. And the leader of the main church was under investigation for teaching and practicing heresy at the time of the Extermination Order. And considering that he actually instituted the practices that he was accused of in the 1870s; he probably would have been excommunicated if the investigation was able to finish. If it wasn't for the extermination order Brigham Young would have never been the president, Mormons would have never moved to Utah, there wouldn't be a Mountain Meadows. Polygamy wouldn't have been a part of the church, Missouri might have ended slavery before the civil war; and that might have been the impotence to end slavery in the other states without the need for war. And a peaceful end of slavery would have likely not resulted in the creation of the KKK or segregation and Jim Crow policies in the South.
