Is it possible to have a United Nations (UN) that can keep so called Super Power nations in line?

The UN seems to be impotent due to the Veto wielding powerful nations who each seek to rule the world or their region and use their Veto to basically ignore rules that apply to everyone else.

- China wants to rule Asia and the world.
- Russia wants to rule Europe
- USA doesn't directly rule, but has global influence that is unrivalled.

So is it possible to have a United Nations that can keep the Super Powers in line?

Because for anyone I the 80% living outside of the 3 so-called Super Power nations, don't fancy being ruled by them.

Should note that the 145 million population Russia is at risk to eventually get annexed by China in the East and absorbed by the 450 million population EU.

Sure, if the important countries in the world agree to a supranational body that can unilaterally limit the actions these important countries can conduct under their national sovereignty.

I mean, how? If the USA wants to invade Iraq and the powerful UN is supposed to stop that, how? Is it going to fields its own army? Who is going to agree to spending immense amounts on their military and subsequently decides to give away all control to an unelected government with basically no representation to that country’s constituents? Also, even if you remove the veto, the UN is nothing more than a paper tiger because it effectively has no legal mechanism to enforce anything (again, a matter of national sovereignty).

Countries are free to ignore UN rulings and resolutions as long as they have the power backing them up. And well, the UN can never change that calculation because that would require important countries giving up their sovereignty

I don't think it has to involve giving up sovereignty, the UN should only involve international matters or issues. I understand the current complexity, but I wonder if there is a future solution that would allow for a fair system that the powerful nations could sign up to.

The problem with the UN is that it cannot force anything because countries are always sovereign. If countries want to ignore resolutions, they can easily do so.

If this becomes something that needs to be enforced, either there needs to be an actual international legal order (i. e. giving up sovereignty to general assembly + international court) or there needs to be UN-mandate to supersede domestic politics in e. g. forcing a boycott.

This inherently requires giving up sovereignty. This is also why there is only one example of an actual separate international legal order, which is the EU.

The whole idea is the UN consists of civilizations and civilized people are defined as those who keep themselves in line. On the geological scale the concept is still in its infancy so while it is important to criticize and point out what to improve it would be premature to abandon it entirely.

I agree and I don't suggest abandoning it, but do feel it needs to be restructured to prevent large nations bullying smaller nations through use of force.

1, yes due to the VETO, that you complained about, each super power vetoes the other. Yes "United Nations (UN) DOES "keep so called Super Power nations in line" by veto each other. This also answers your worry about china can't ANNEX russia due to u. s. VETO.

2, NEXT you complain about the veto... that itself helped BLOCK each other "ruling the world" you wrote, u. s. is blocked by russia and u. s. blocked russia back.

3, "China wants to rule Asia and the world," BUT the veto of the others blocked them... except the switch of taiwan u. s. ought to have vetoed china. "Russia wants to rule Europe" but china veto blocks it.

4, our U. S. "global influence" is blocked by the veto of russia and china. So that is precisely your goal each "keeps the other in line" by blocking the other.

6, the 80% can choose and do choose which super power to align with. not "under any" but can switch between options.
