At the time, they made it seem like JFK was a master of making Khrushchev fold under pressure. The race for missiles between Russia and the US wasn’t even a race. The US dominated the Russian missile count by dozens if not hundreds when we stationed them in Turkey and pointed it at their nation. The reality was it was JFK who folded and turned the missiles away from Russia so that Khrushchev would point the few missiles in Cuba away from the US. He just told everyone it was his greatness that did it because the Kennedys were obsessed with their public image. You can always look up what happened to Rosemary Kennedy as a result of her rebelling against her family as proof of that.


The US didn’t “win” the Cuban Missile Crisis. We surrendered. That’s why it’s not recognized, it wasn’t a victory.

I agree with what you say about the "missile gap", but this wasn't well known during the 60's. The Soviets talked a good game and were never afraid to suffer extreme casualties.

Having said this, had the U. S. obliterated the Cuban launch sites I don't think the Soviets would have responded with anything but bluster.

The Cuban missile crisis was a big win for JFK and for a while it looked like this could be the end of the world. However there was no big military action and there were no mass casualties.

I would rather see 9/11 be a national holiday. It is Remembrance Day.

Not true. Its VERY prominent when we teach the cold war but the problem is its one of 20-25 flash points 1945-1991 and gets lost in the narrative.

Also, because its modern history it doesn't get tested on standardized exams as much and as anyone knows, what gets tested, gets taught. Its largely this phenomenon that manifests as a seeming critical unawareness of current events.
