It's easier for people to speak their true feelings anonymously, so you'll see more extremes online than in real life. In actuality, there will always be all types of people. Hopefully, people can be true to themselves, as pretending to be something they're not will generally backfire. For every type of person, there are others who appreciate that type of person.

We won't get respect if we don't give respect. Everyone has a belief system. The problem exists when people feel entitled to force their agenda onto others, because their insecurities cause them to feel threatened by the differences. When people start forcing their agenda onto others, everyone becomes a reaction to that action, and chaos ensues. You'll never see a positive long-term change by forcing one's agenda onto others. When we change for others, that change tends to be temporary and/or conditional. Unfortunately, there are too many people who feel entitled to whatever they want, and they'll go to all lengths to get their entitlement. Mutual respect is necessary for harmony to exist, whether people are similar or different. After all, how often do you go to a restaurant with people and everyone orders the same menu item? If you don't feel threatened by this difference, how do other differences become threats? Showing a legitimate desire to understand the differences will open up communication and eliminate perceived threats. It's about being respectful, not being alike.

It's not our place to judge what works for others, just as it's not their place to judge what works for us. Should we tell the makers of ice cream they can only make the flavor we prefer? I don't care how many people believe an authoritarian approach is ideal, forcing anything on others that we wouldn't appreciate reciprocated in kind on ourselves or our loved ones is dysfunctional. I was stationed in the Air Force with Iranian pilots who felt it was their right to have sex with any woman they wanted, yet they'd be up in arms if you looked at or touched their sisters. How would you feel if a law is passed making heterosexuality illegal? What if a law is passed making it illegal for horses to be in public without wearing diapers? Anyone can feel there laws are legitimate, make sense, and everyone else is wrong. Would Russia appreciate being the recipient of what they are doing to Ukraine? Double standards will never lead to positive results. If someone enjoys reading horror stories in the privacy of their own home, it's no one's place to tell them they can't.
