Have these values vanished?

Throughout childhood, there were certain values that were instilled in everyday life. Adults were actually adults back then and held a tight ship.

• Order
• Professionalism
• Accountability
• Properness/etiquette
• Respect for authority

... these were the values that were still the norm. In school, the first week every school year, the assistant principal would pull everyone into an assembly and review the entire student handbook.

This was just back in 2000-2009.

Is it just me, or has society lapsed in discipline, order, and rule of law? Back then, those in charge took responsibility. Adults these days act like children. Children act just as bad. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

It seems like the past decade and a half, everyone thought it was appropriate to blatently challenge the status quo and norms of society.

I think you're fantasizing about the past with a few exceptions as to "degree". For example, in the 50's, "mailbox baseball" was a thing in rural areas. It was a nuisance and sometimes costly to the property owner, but at worst you had to replace your mailbox. That kind of destructive behavior escalated to setting cars on fire or pouring sugar into gas tanks, causing major repair expenses or the complete loss of property. Everything is a matter of degree.

I think there was a greater respect for authority in general, and a greater sense of kindness, but not nearly as much as people think it was. One reason people lost respect for authority is because the "law" didn't seem to apply fairly to everyone. If you had money, the rules were different, and are even MORE different today. Also, there are a lot of laws that are "bad" laws, and people don't want to respect them, so they behave disrespectfully.

I have literally seen letters from ancient Greek complaining about how "back in my day children used to.." and its always the same old bullshit about "discipline" or "respecting authority" or complaining about some new technology.. like NEWS PAPERS god forbid.

So yeah, congratulations, you are old. Get over yourself.

Actually, I just googled this real quick and found a clay tablet with this text on it:
"We have fallen upon evil times
and the world has waxed very old and wicked.
Politics are very corrupt.
Children are no longer respectful to their parents."

So yeah.. Your complaint is literally older than the pyramids. Congratulations on your bout of originality.

It hasn't changed much since the invention of written language. Babylonian & Chinese scribes practiced writing using admonitions for proper behavior. Society has been complaining about kids since before recorded history
