I doubt it. Because the real issue is hyper-tribalism, and tribalism is hard wired into humans by natural selection. Religious extremism is an expression of hyper-tribalism. Before organized society, with commonly agreed upon laws to protect us, being too trusting was fatal. Some overcome this today through knowledge, and upbringing. while others go extreme with it. If hyper-tribalism wasn't expressed with extreme religion, the hyper-tribal would find another way. Racism and homophobia are other forms of hyper-tribalism. As is nationalism. All of these thing increase in tough times because people feel threatened and their base instincts take over in response to perceived threats.
