Others have mentioned under other posts regarding firearms that they have never heard of mass shootings being stopped by law abiding citizens. This is mostly because these don’t get reported outside of local news for reasons we can only speculate. Ironically, Canada is moving to ban the same firearm that the woman used to protect the people at the party. The suspect was barred from owning firearms but obtained them illegally anyway.
Personally I think at the national (US) level, the response from the media and government is actually exasperating the problem as opposed to stopping it.
Some countries have implemented bans, however in the US, the 400,000,000 firearms and the creation of 3D printed and CNC machined gun components would only create the large black market in history.
What realistic methods could be implemented to actually stop these situations from happening in America specifically?
News Story: “Charleston police said it all started when 37-year-old Dennis Butler was speeding up and down a parking lot inside the Vista View apartments.
He was approached by people attending a graduation party and a birthday party, who asked him to slow down, as children were playing.
Witnesses said Butler seemed agitated and left but returned to the complex shortly after, armed with an AR-15 style rifle, and started shooting at the crowd.
Police said a woman pulled out her pistol, shooting and killing him.
"This lady was carrying a lawful firearm," Hazelett said. "A law abiding citizen who stopped the threat of probably 20 or 30 people getting killed. She engaged the threat and stopped it. She didn't run from the threat, she engaged it. Preventing a mass casualty event here in Charleston."
Guess you only reffer to US in cases like this not being heard or done I live in a contry where you have to fill all type of thing to have a firearm (Serve in the police/Militery for X time, pass a shooting range, have an option to secure it (gun safe and the like)) They also have to pass a interview and more stuff to get the gun
And here I guess its more needed, as someone going at the street with a knife, trying to drive over pepole, getting a wepone (stolen) and shooting
Had she waited for the police to arrive lots of people could have been killed. No one wants to admit that because they have been trying to take guns away for a while. Could be the Powers That Be are orchestrating all these shootings somehow so the people will behind it too. And you have probably noticed that there is a lot more killings and a lot more publicity about them. As it stands, the police will not protect you and are more likely to kill some unarmed person even when they do arrive.
I hadn't heard. America is a total madhouse. As they say: cometh the hour, cometh the man. Or in this case the woman. A vigilante is a sign that authority are inept to the task required.
When a society has gotten so out of hand that citizens are forced to take matters into their own hands, it is a sign that the system is broken and needs serious reform.
The fear of a civilian shooting him didn't stop him in the first place did it? No, he did what we see so often in America, guy gets pissed off so he pulls out a gun or in this case goes and fetches one. No doubt he thought it was self defence against from being butthurt
He was barred from owning firearms. Luckily his potential victims were legally allowed to defend themselves.
You hyper focus on guns and shootings but ignore how many ways people can be victimized by horrible monsters that exist in all societies. The police aren’t there when you need them and I personally don’t want to be at the mercy of criminals who don’t care about laws.
Growing up around firearms the suggestion to highly restrict or ban them is as absurd sounding as banning kitchen utensils, fire extinguishers or hand tools.
@BillyBalls: That the whole good guy with a gun doesn't always stop a mass murdering spree. Hardly never actually til the carnage has already been done.
Similar events happen pretty often in the US, but often, the conflict is resolved without shots fired, and even when they are, the media almost never reports it because it goes against their narrative.
Even if one of their reporters does a story, the editorial director won't run it - a number of reporters have confirmed this. Stories that put gun ownership in a positive light are not to be run, period.
