It's very telling that guns nuts are so reluctant to just acknowledge that achieving the same amount of damage is way harder with a knife than with a gun.
Nobody claims that banning guns will completely stop violence, they trot that strawman out every time. The point is that a gun has no function outside of causing harm. Knifes on the other hand are necessary for, well, lots of things, mainly in the kitchen. Unless these pro-gun people are suggesting they'd happily give up their guns AND knifes and use plastic cutlery instead.
