I don’t think there’s a hard number to it. Sometimes it’s reported in-progress and before the casualties are counted. They’ll say “six dead, ten injured”, then an hour later, “ten dead, four injured.”
To me, it seems like it’s about the random-ness of it. All shootings suck, obviously, but it’s when it happens at school, grocery stores, concerts and recreational gatherings, etc, I think that’s when it becomes a “holy shit” thing, like “that could’ve been me or someone I know!” Shootouts involving so-called “criminals” don’t really move the needle, not for me, anyway, as I kind of expect that as par for the course. The big “law & order” drum-bangers make the biggest deal out of those, because it can often have a racial component they can key in on. Remember that “it’s never the fault of guns”, that’s the hard and fast default position they hold. It’s always something else. Some idiot politician literally said the other day that it’s because we have legal abortions here, that’s why we have so little value for human life. Holy shit, man. And I bet the same day someone was like “How DARE you exploit dead children for political purposes!” to someone mentioning the extremely obvious aspect of the Uvalde tragedy involving elementary school kids, as if that’s not additionally horrific and needs no special consideration. Ummm…. isn’t that the entire pro-life movement, in essence, by the way? The supposed atrocity of dead children, just unborn ones in that case? But if the kids are already alive, don’t you dare mention it? WHAT? Just say “I love guns and am addicted to the sense of power and security that they give me, and no matter how bad they may make things, I don’t want them to go away.” Just be straight up, I’d respect that so much more than the mental gymnastics we go through every time to blame it on everything except the literal murder machine that was used to carry it out. Like I don’t even need “it’s 100% the guns”, because that’s not true either, there are certainly other factors involved…. but to say the guns have no part in the discussion is just burying your head in the sand. Not for nothing, I’ve heard ZERO people who hold the opinion of “I hate guns, but the Second Amendment vaguely details how we’re allowed to have them forever, with no mention or consideration of 250 years of advancement in weaponry technology and lethality, so we have to respect that.” The people so vigorously defending this are the gun hardos who can’t imagine actually having to fistfight to defend themselves lmao.

No, it's not true. Every shooting, regardless of how many injured or killed, is reported in the news. Some of the reporting doesn't get picked up by national or international news outlets; a lot of it doesn't spread beyond local news stations. Two years ago, we had a shooting here that injured 15 and killed two, but it didn't get picked up by national wire services. Whatever the news media's criteria are for what to cover nationally and what not to is anyone's guess.
Like national news it doesn’t make it very often.. however 5-10 people being shot I think does still make the national news. But local news stories cover people being shot even when only 1 person was shot.

Every shooting in my area is reported by the local news, regardless how any people were shot or if anyone was killed.
The national news reports major shootings (especially if a few people are killed). The actual number can be as few as one! The news reported that 5 people were killed at a shooting in Buffalo, NY just a couple weeks ago. It doesn't need to be at least 16.
Fox News has been reporting the weekend shootings in Chicago for several years! Its quite common for 15-40 people to be shot (each weekend) and between 4-10 people killed because of those shootings in Chicago. Most of the shootings are black on black crime involving gangs or due to drug deals and BLM has said... wait for it... NOTHING about that. Many innocent people are still shot and killed there weekly. Multiple kids (and adults) have been killed due to stray bullets going through windows and homes because of these idiots.

There were several shootings over Memorial Day weekend across a few US cities that you had to search local news outlets to even find anything about. There was also that black guy that shot at a bunch of Korean businesses and Koreans recently, whose girlfriend even said he hated Koreans and Asians, but there was scarcely a whisper of it in the news. It certainly didn’t make the national news.
Reporting on mass shootings and really any violence in America is highly, highly politicized. Events that fit a narrative are repeated ad infinitum, and those that don’t are barely discussed and quickly forgotten about.
That is not entirely true because when somebody shoots more then one person it usually is reported on the news (local area is always first), if the family have of the victims have a lot money they can block it from being reported especially in a small town but for it to be reported on world news it have to be a minimum of 3 or more people to be shot (Dead or Alive) at a crowd of of a least 10 (the manage to get away) people or more at a park, school, clinic, small hospital, restaurants, parking lots, churches, party, or special event for to be considered a Mass shooting (different city's or states have certain minimum counts and laws).

Usually if it is state news you will hear stories about people getting shot regardless if it is a mass shooting, especially when one has happened recently because it goes hand in hand with the gun violence narrative and because it is trending. Trending news will get more attention.
Local news will pretty much report any local shooting that wasn't a domestic incident. State and national news generally won't report it unless there's a large number or people dead or unless it was a major event regardless of casualties. As for mass shooters motivations, I don't think they have a specific number they aim for.
Well yeah that's the problem with that country. It's gotten so bad now that you have to murder into the double digits now to even make the news. In twenty years a shooting of 35 people won't even be newsworthy. You'll have to shoot 100 people before anybody talks about it. I'm not dumping on Americans either, but they got a real problem with murder by firearms in that country.

In general, they are hesitant to report on every little shooting that happens, because it would clearly paint black men as the real threat to society, not white men.

People shoot other people for three reasons the way I see it.
One, is war/armed conflicts.
Two, is to defend themselves when they feel their life is threatened.
Three, they are not in their right minds and should be put down as soon as possible.
I do not believe there is a number in their heads when they go on a shooting spree, they just want to do as much damage as possible before they are taken out.

Several of my friends are American. It seems the number is ten before it's reported nationally and fifteen internationally.
They do cover all shootings, it's just outside we only hear about the five or six a week that hit the numbers.

There are hundreds of mass shootings (four or more victims) annually. Many are gang/drug related.
The only ones reported are school shootings or when there are a large amount of victims.

That is not true. There are reportings commonly of shootings with 3-4 people. A shooting of say, 3 people, may or may not make it into national news, but it certainly would make it into local news. It is all sad stuff!

I'm 50. In my lifetime the UK has had two mass shootings and one mass knife attack on a nursery school.
Gangs in the inner cities - London, Manchester & Birmingham in particular - have gang violence which sometimes involves guns, but guns are far harder to get hold of in England thanks to psychological profiling and the understanding yno basic human right is infringed by refusing to allow a pimple-faced whacko to buy a machine gun at the local Tesco with his carrots and onions.
