On this one, I am going to answer on a personal level as I have worked over the course of my career for two United States Senators and four Members of the House of Representatives. You'll never guess what I discovered?
No, they are not immoral and insensitive. Rather, they are just like all other human beings. Some are nice and decent. Some are not so nice. Indeed, the real lesson to be learned from politics is that politicians tend to reflect the people who elected them - with the difference being that, unlike those who elected them, they are not as prone to gross generalizations that all politicians are insensitive and immoral. That judgement is left to be made by the whinny self-pitying publics who demand the policies that they get and are then horrified by the consequences of what they get.
To start, I have run the gamut. I worked for one Member who cheated on his first two wives, has since switched parties and really had no guiding principle other than self-indulgence. On the other hand, I worked for a Member who was humane and decent, absolutely adored his wife and children. Who ran for office because he truly thought of it as public service. (Just as an aside, when my dad, who lived in Michigan while I was in Washington, DC, passed away, this particular Member told me to take all the time off I needed and he offered - out of his own pocket!!! - to pay for my flight home.) The rest were all in between those extremes.
The public likes to whine and complain about "politicians" and "elites," but the truth is that they are the mirror image of those whom they would criticize. First they fail to recognize that, in a democracy, the "people" do not decide. Rather, they decide which elites decide. Because the elites are the ones who have the skill, training, education and experience to manage something as large and complex as government. It is not a job for amateurs.
So the voters vote. Usually they are badly informed about the issues and know only that they want that they want. To no sensible person's surprise they are then horrified by the consequences of their choices when those choices don't work out.
They then complain about the government. To which response, here are some fun facts:
In the United States, 1 in 6 who works, works for government. (Federal, state or local levels.)
1 in 7 is a Social Security recipient and this will only get larger as the population ages and the workforce - and thus the tax base - shrinks. Thus does Social Security have $21 trillion in unfunded liabilities. Yet try to reform the Social Security system and the public howls as if someone were setting out to touch up the Mona Lisa with a paint gun. The message from the voting public being like the note from the homicidal serial killer to the police left at the crime scene - "Stop me before I kill again!!!"
In most years 1/3 of all families (American) receive some form of transfer payment - SS, Medicare, Medicaid, AFDC, etc. (During the COVID pandemic year of 2021, actually 92% of all families received some form of transfer payment.)
Just to top it off, these brutally treated victims of the politicians then complain about high taxes. Yet the truth is that the top 10% of wage earners in the United States pay 80% of all the income taxes and the bottom 50% of wage earners pay NO income taxes AT ALL.
Long story short, politicians are left to reconcilable the irreconcilable wishes of a self-pitying. self-indulgent and generally poorly informed where not flat out poorly educated public, who then blame the politicians when that - as night follows day - does not end well.
Nope,. politicians have a hard job and like the people who elected them, some are good, some are bad, and some actually achieve a well deserved greatness. They are not the fundamental problem. Rather, to the public, J'accuse!!
Personally, I have never considered politicians like that. Of course there are dishonest politicians etc. but I have always refused to generalize.
There are plumbers, gardeners, bakers, who commit crimes, thefts etc. however it does not occur to anyone to say that "all" gardeners, plumbers etc, are criminals. But as soon as a scandal concerns a politician then people tend to generalize.
And if you find the American people quite unfair to these politicians, the French are ungrateful, look at how we treated Clemenceau and de Gaulle, they allowed us to be on the winning side in two world wars, and the French they got rid of them as if they had done nothing for France.
Weird this "I accuse" reminds me of a few things lol.
Yup, we basically are in agreement, though I would add that the "generalization" of the "dishonesty" of politicians is a symptom of, and conduces to, a form of populism that is ultimately self-destructive. As Disraeli said, "A nation's liberties are embodied in its' institutions. The march of intellect is not enough."
As to the fate of DeGualle, Clemenceau and - just to add - Churchill in 1945, for sure that was ingratitude on a colossal scale. However, I would add that gratitude, although healthy, is not sufficient grounds for re-electing a political leader. They are elected to advance a particular vision or agenda and where that vision or agenda is found wanting, fair or not, there is no obligation to re-elect the leaders who advocated them.
The public may be mistaken - perish the thought!!! There being where the problem lies. The public makes a bad choice, and then blames not themselves in moments of sober reflection, but rather the "politicians" and the "elites." It is pure twaddle.
Finally, I give Monsieur Zola all due credit for the "J'accuse."
US politics especially lacks accountability, so our politicians are awful.
Where Is like to visit is Iceland or New Zealand. Their politicians seem way more personable and better representative of the population.
Like here, we have Mitch McConnell. One of the most hated politicians in US history and currently despised even by his own constituents. But he has corrupted Kentucky politics so deeply that they can't really have anyone else, despite being the poorest state in the union partially by his hand. He essentially controls staged opposition. And he has sought only to corrupt every facet of US politics.
Many states and regions are no longer considered democracies and the US was recently demoted to "flawed/unstable democracy", with probably 40% of the population convinced that this is a good thing.
So yeah, US politicians are basically a gathering of people trying their best to destroy the country, and only prevented from doing so by voters, while they try everything they can to suppress voters or deny election results.
Generally, yes.
For most people who consider a career in politics, they have a big ego, a desire for power and influence, and a determination to get what they want at all costs.
Those who enter with good hearts will often have to choose: progress their career, or hold their values.
If you're not in the mold of what your party wants, you might even be forced out of your seat to accommodate a more "palatable" candidate (happened to many good hearted politicians I know through family).
Politicians seek power. Power corrupts. Those who enter politics for moral reasons, not power, are often sidelined, pidgeon-holed, and kept in positions that limit what they can do to damage the existing systems.
Every politician who seeks to lead a party or country is a bad egg. It's why we need extensize check and balances, and term limits.
I think most politicians start with a fire in the belly with big ideas and hopes for their constituents. In the end, at least in the last decade or two, they are trying to come up with different ideas to deliver votes their way. I generally think they’re fairly selfish.

I don't think most of them start out that way. I know several people that have gone to Washington congressman senators all with the best of intentions only to get there and realize they're fighting what is now being called a deep stage that is way deeper than anyone can imagine and I'm not sure anything can ever be done to change it. The president doesn't run Washington DC Congress doesn't run Washington DC the Supreme Court does not run Washington DC. It's the lifelong appointed bureaucrats in government positions making decisions and even if they screw it up they can't be fired they can't be disciplined nothing can really happen to them so why would they care. They work on their own agenda and what's the best for them politicians be damned. The president is merely someone they have to put up with for four to eight years and then another fat moves in thinking he can do something as well. An unintended consequence I think our forefathers might have overlooked.
I truly believe that very, very few politicians actually have any real care for the people and the well-being of a society. And it's the reason why they are not at the top and never will be.
I think the vast majority of politicians really do only care about their own ambition, prestige, money, aspirations for high seats, appealing to the boys' club, and doing what they want to do even if it hurts the rest of us. Yes, even the politicians who have nice smiles, nice speeches, and appear to be caring, family people. And yes, it might make me sound like a paranoid nut job, but I think many of them do dabble in some kinds of occultic stuff and may even be required to. Presidents and politicians have been involved in that stuff for years, so I don't think it would stop now.
In general I’d say yes.
Leftists have a tendency to be more collectivist and use that as a means of controlling their voter base. They have a tendency to create division among their groups as a means of creating factions that they can militarize and use to gain power in various ways using rhetoric and fallacy. The right has a tendency to be very rigid in their beliefs but have a tendency to be more willing to have a conversation with someone they disagree with. That said at the upper level of politics, there are no parties, just political grandstanding. Not only do politicians at that level not consider the normal person human, they actively hate us.
Local level politicians are in general pretty good people unless their goal is to get into higher office.
Speaking from the US - I have seen politicians stand up for what is right and put democracy first. But unfortunately many congresspeople will bend their morals to up their re-election chances. Some politicians are moral, but many long-active politicians have been there so long because they're great at pursuing their own self interests
I think that a lot of people go into it believing that they're going to make a positive difference, but the combination of being immersed in that world, given authority or the leeway to abuse power they don't actually have on paper, and the fame in the spotlight invariably corrupts their perspective, some quicker than others.
Immoral? Not necissarily, but some modicum of insensitivity is absolutely a requirement. You can't represent two opposite extremes within your own constituency any other way than just assuming they cancel each other out. Which will appear as an insensitivity to both.
Not all of them, some are naive and get used, some have been blackmailed, some just don't care and others are evil.
Then you also have the rare kind of politician, a true grassroots. Someone who went into politics to change things. Those tend to be the good ones if they stay true to their cause.
Yaaaaas. As a black young woman, I don't believe that either side is really commited to trying to help the black community at all. And as a result, I don't like the government. Almost every politician is just concerned with getting more and more money.
We forget what the role of a politician should be: a leader for their people.
Just because the politicians in the states are shit bribe-takers dosent mean thats how it should be
The are communist/marxist criminals... I would to God that was an exaggeration!
Shalom that's ANTI-SEMITISM!!!
Of course and if you weren't you would either be in a low position or executed like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy or one of them black presidents in Africa that exposed the Fake Covid19 plandemic.
no. they are just so far removed from a "normal life", that they can't relate anymore. also they constantly have to make decisions that harm "someone" while helping someone else. you can't make it right for everyone.
Not all. Some are just so unbearable and do not deserve to be a Politician or what soever it's that has to do with the Government.
In Britain we don't consider them people let alone immoral
Most of them yes but not all of them some of them do genuinely care and are good people.
but those good few are unfortunately a
minority.
I've yet to see any politician who actually lives in the Real World.
Nope. The system and the people make them so. I believe.
I wouldn't put it that way. I'd say that many politicians are out of touch with reality.
Often, yes. Regardless of spectrum. Some more than others.
Politicians are for the most part power-hungry pieces of shit. People who enjoy having power over others are usually the worst pieces of shit alive.
@Staximus Most politicians are genuinely good people that want to make a positive difference in their community. Reality is they are a reflection of the people they represent and most people suck. Generally the requirements and accomplishments of politicians are much high than the average person, but people struggle accepting beliefs that differ from theirs especially when the person holding that concrete belief has a platform.
@Vegasrunner most that are directing the flow of large sums of taxpayer money make sure their buddies and themselves profit
@Vegasrunner stop acting like most politicians aren't pieces of shit
When their jobs are done self servingly or outside of the interest of the average citizen then I believe they are immoral. So yes most of them are.
Politicians are all a bunch of self -serving twats who are smart enough to bamboozle the average sheeple.
I think of most politicians almost like that of a "Mafia" where it's all about making money and the view of the American people is "It's only business and nothing personal" just follow the money
Most are , especialy after they have been in office for a while.
they exist everywhere... insensitive and immoral people get Jobs in every career that exisits...
The immense majority of them are. They live lifestyles of privilege which causes them to totally be out of touch with the common man and woman.
Yes! That’s why Trump was good for our country, he isn’t a politician. He’s a business man. Now Biden has killed our lives with inflation and will blame everyone but his government he runs.
No, they are people who have everyone under a mind control device and they are actually aliens.
Absolutely. Almost all of them are all words no actions to back them up.
The majority of politicians are literal psychopaths. It's been proved by science.
in my opinion once they reach a level where they are professional politicians, they are all liars at best and most likely much worse.
Why do you care so much about politics? You're a girl you should care about nail polish and bras.
more like liar to me
things they say , and they do , didn't match at all
You have to. You don't govern with hugs and kindness.
Yes they all dirty don’t get where they are without stepping on people.
